Dominican Republic to be 'Socially Cleaned' in today

But that's where you are wrong, Dark skinned Dominicans are being violated by this law as well. People who were born there in the last 80 years, not just people who crossed the border are being denied citizenship. Almost all of them are dark-skinned, this isn't just Haitians here. Dark skinned people have been getting killed for years in DR, this is fact please do your research. Whites were brought in to "whiten" the population of DR during the 30s. Straight from Wikipedia about the Dominican president of 1938

All racism is wrong, no matter what the country or race. The message has been lost among arguments about identity, to the point where some people are actually defending the Dominican government on this law.

Everyone knows Trujillo and what he was about, no one is denying that, those were very dark times and speak to any Dominican light or dark and see if the Trujillo era is something to be proud of, dude was an extremist, a dictator, ruthless and very racist.

While there is still a racist issue in the island, just like any other place in the planet, this whole thing is NOT just based off racism, this has been going on for 2 years and is plan put in place to control immigration....people were given a deadline to get their papers in order, the sad part is that resources are scarce, a lot of Haitians live in poverty, along with many Dominicans as well, some can't read or write, some simply didn't care to get their things in order....bottom line, the country has become over populated, The Haitian population can't possibly become the majority in DR...where would that leave DR?...yeah going back 80 years is an excessive measure and that's about the only thing that has me scratching my head....other than that, I just see it as country controlling the influx of another nation. Imagine you live next door to somebody and they have 30 family members, who all one day decide to move into your house and take over because you happen to have AC and Direct tv and they are less fortunate and only have a fan and cable....I bet you wouldn't be too happy either.

I just don't get where you guys getting these generalizations from...most of you guys, just visit the island and possibly just stay in a resort at most, if you even ever been there or else you wouldn't be so quick to jump to judgement ..Dominicans don't have anything against the complexions of Haitians, they are upset over them completely overpopulating their land, Haitians girls that tend to prostitution, getting pregnant by dudes that will never care for that kid and worsening this chain of poverty the country is going through, besides tourism there isn't much else for the country to thrive on.

Dominicans don't have anything against the complexion of Haitians? They hate them because they are black! That's what it all comes down to in their eyes. My people deny their own heritage they call themselves "Moreno" instead of negro. We should be ashamed that in today's day this is even an issue

If that's how you feel bro...

If you aren't Dominican, please stop talking about things you don't know. Don't speak about Haitian girls that tend to do prostitution, as prostitution is a way of life for much of the Dominican women in poverty. In some cities like Sosua and Santiago it is literally the main attraction for tourists and the police support/ignore it.

To say that 80 years is just excessive is true ignorance. Imagine if a law like that was passed here where you have to prove your citizenship prior to 1930. I'm sure light skinned Dominicans aren't being asked for their documents.

Increasing deportations and guarding the borders are one thing, but stripping natural born citizens of their rights is an atrocity. Racism is a huge part of this law, especially considering the history of the country.

Aren't you an immigrant? If a law stated that your child about to enter this world would be stripped of his citizenship unless they could prove you or your parents were born here in the last 80 years. That's just excessive?

Heritage claiming aside. How is it that Hatians 3 generations removed from Haiti are being deported yet people are still claiming this is an immigration issue. From the article it seems like the bureaucracy and the prevailing sentiments made it hard for folks to get their papers in order(listen to how that even sounds), even before there was a do or die deadline put on place.

Everyone loves to turn a blind eye to racism. In this day and age, no one is going to come out and say, yep I'm a racist and I'm doing such and such for racist reasons. There's always a moral justification put in place beforehand.

If Hatians were white ya don't think DR would have an issue with it?...cmon man

Haitians are overpopulating a country that is not theirs....there is 0 border control unlike the US/Mexico...there are not enough resources for the native Dominicans, imagine putting another nation on their back....is an issue regardless of their complexion.

And prostitution is an issue with both Haitian and Dominican girls....I didn't say just Haitians.

At the end of the day if you are poor you fall under the same umbrella wether Haitian or Dominican....is more of a social-economic thing....see how racially biased this crazy racist country is towards one of the many MLB stars or singers, etc....

I'm not denying the presence of racism, just saying is not the sole deciding factor, no more than a country simply trying to control the immigration of another.

And please don't compare the USA with DR....that's bizarre.

Deflecting the fact that this law is affecting hundreds of thousands of Dominicans born over the last 80 years and not just Haitians, then singling out Haitians on prostitution as if they are the only ones ruining the country.

Enjoy your night, we're done here.

Lol

I brought up prostitution as 1 of the issues that the overpopulation of Haitians brings....but ok.

For the moment let's agree to disagree, I think is best to see how this plays out, doubt the country will go as far as derooting 3 generations of Dominican born citizens that can't provide the right documentation for their grand parents born in a hut en el campo....it's unrealistic....but Continue spewing this hate for DR

I'm guessing Steezy is going hard because thats where his girl is from?

I get some of the points that are being made by both sides but I don't see how you can dismiss the racism like there aren't many videos showing beatings and killings simply because they are nvm... overpopulating and taking up resources.

Short video and straight to the point.

Messed up situation, I hope it ends soon so it can be put behind us.

Not dismissing it at all, it plays a role, is just not the ONLY reason for this whole mess tho...least not IMO

I'm going hard because Dominicans are very hospitable people, hate to see a whole nation generalized as bigots and racists when that is not the case, plenty of Dominicans whom are proud of their roots, plenty of Dominicans struggling in poverty right next to their Haitian bros, plenty of Dominicans that also deal with racism in their own land.

I like to have faith in this people and think that this is more of a scare tactic to get things in order and try and control the further migration of more Haitians....they just don't have the resources to make themselves responsible for Haiti.

I agree with you on that. Haiti is messed up and we shouldn't have been in this situation but it is what it is. The video I posted explains it pretty well. I hope the gov't one day gets their **** together. Sucks for all those people going to a country most have never even been to and probably don't even speak the language.

I know its not all Dominicans that are racist. The Dominicans friends I have are cool people.

article just confirms everything ive known since child hood.

"Yet anti-haitianismo has always been a political tool for scapegoating social problems. Virtually no Dominican wants to return to the Trujillo era, but his legacy endures, and the current situation cannot be taken out of context of a history of racial animosity that some scholars contend dates back to the colonial period before Juan Pablo Duarte and the Trinitarios founded the republic in 1844."

So I suppose Dominicans are going stop migrating (maybe even leave) to PR then too, right?

I mean, if they wanna stick to their principles

This.

Matter of fact, maybe.....

America and PR should kick out all Dominicans, and strip them of their citizenship. I mean that might be a lil racist, but why should another country be responsible for these people, we only got so many resources to go around

Know it sounds messed up and some what racist, but I'm sure Steezy could see why it would be necessary

I don't see how any second generation american can be in favor of this law. If tomorrow this law were to be implemented here in America, would you still be in favor of it? because a lot of these conservatives would love to deport all of us using the same excuses the Dominican government is using on the Haitians.
