When it comes to slavery, Africans had and sold slaves. Nobody can argue with that because before the industrial revolution, manpower made powerful societies. However, the people sold were of two kinds: criminals and war prisoners. Slavery became an issue of race when Europeans codified their slavery system according to theories of racial superiority that placed them at the top of the racial hierarchy. In addition, the economy of the new world was centered around the trade, which meant that it constituted a very large portion of the British and US GDPs. Because of that growing demand, slavers started capturing free Africans in Africa in order to sell them into slavery, to the point where local kings reached out to their euro counterparts to get them to curb the demand (there are letters from King Afonso I of Kongo addressing it). The Arab trade never had that much impact on the continent.
It's not racial resentment (whatever that means): it's about telling the truth in the face of the feel-good history revisionism some of you like to partake in. The civil war was about the states' rights to own slaves.

Doesn't the constitution also say that whoever is born in the US is an automatic citizen? The right wingers are crazy about their constitution, but not so much about that part. Donald "anchor babies" Drumpf be like "Well, I don't think that's what our founding fathers meant it like that when they wrote it."
That part of the constitution sure is open to interpretation according to them. But as soon as it's anything about guns, nooo you can't discuss that part. Even though it was wrote during a time when the government and people had access to same weapons, whereas today the 700 billion dollar per year military budget having government has hydrogen bombs and drones. Yet you can't touch the right of some right wing nut to own assault rifles and keep the illusion that they would have a chance in a fight against a "tyrannical government" alive.

Pretty sure the slave trade is directly mentioned in the constitution. It's one of those documents that should actually be rewritten so it doesn't require 9 men to determine what is and isn't.

Honestly, politics/economics are a dirty interest of mine. I don't mind debating it because I consider myself reasonably informed on the topic based on how much I read on a daily/weekly basis and my background in school during my undergrad and grad school along with what I do day to day at work.
I have a left-center leaning mindset and I like to debate those from the right because I honestly like proving them wrong or challenging their thoughts in such ways that a normal person won't. I see Rusty and a few others do the same. I'm sure we all know that changing some of these people is damn near impossible. But I rather try to inform them than have them live in the "ignorance is bliss" phase of their lives. Plus, I know many people don't have the patience to do so. Now don't get me wrong, if I get approached by an extreme left leaning person I will do the exact same thing to them.
