Not a business guy by any means, but how is it possible that 22 of 30 teams were losing money when the lockout happened

When you say "losing money" what does that really look like, is it as black and white as it sounds? I just find that so bizarre

I'm not sure, but I have a mentor who use to be a minority owner for the Grizz before new ownership took over. He's out of it now because he said it was one of the worst investments he ever made. I'm not sure if the same thing goes for the majority owners, but I assume its true. He told me that you don't invest in a basketball team for the profit, you do it because you enjoy the game of basketball and the perks. This may not be true for every majority/minority owner, but that's what he told me.

If you love basketball and a billionaire owner, what's losing money to you if you are at least able to profit off your other businesses? If your net profit ends up being a lot more (most billionaires have at least 5 streams of income or more), you are doing ok  . If it was as bad as written, I think more owners would be willing to sell more than anything. That's if the "losing money" thing is true.

I read this yesterday and realistically I wouldn't be surprised if there were 10 teams losing money last year like they were talking about. I guarantee the Nets lost money last year and there are enough terribly run franchises that it could be true.

But they can spin that however they want.

Pro sports franchises are similar to the guy who owns a world-famous painting. Last year it sat on his wall and he had to spend $10,000 to clean and maintain it. So he runs around telling everyone it costs him money to own it last year, meanwhile the value of the painting itself went up $50 million in that year.

Obviously these are simple negotiating tactics but let's be real here.

That's nuts though. I just can't imagine 22 of 30 teams majority and minority owners giving money to losing ventures because they all love the game. I'm not saying I don't believe you or that the guy was wrong but it's just hard to imagine that dozens upon dozens of these guys are basically treating the NBA as a charity

I will leave this here

After morphing almost 400 current players, this is what the average NBA face looks like
Instantly reminded me of Carmelo Patches Anthony

The valuation of the franchises are skyrocketing. The minority owner may not see as much of a benefit from this, but it's just like holding an asset and seeing it's value grow without reaping a huge profit.

Exactly.

NBA teams being sold for $800M+ when they originally purchased the team for $350-400M. The value of their franchises should definitely outweigh whatever they're losing on a yearly basis. This isn't like the restaurant business or something

If they are truly losing a ton of money, sell your franchise for double the amount you paid for it. This may not work for owners that recently purchased their franchises like Balllmer who paid $2B .

That's exactly what I thought. These owners are business men. If all those dudes were legit losing money. The league would fold. They are not keeping the NBA alive out of love for basketball or fans. They want to get paid. If the money wasn't coming in they'll sell asap.

nah. kd is so far from a threat to kobe its not eeeem funny. some kobe fans hate on bron because he's the next great and they feel threatened and fearful that he'll be greater than kobe. NOBODY feels that way about KD. Cats pouring the hot grits on KD cuz he's a corny emotional star having an identity crisis. He's confused as to who and what he wants to be.

Finally, someone who has the same opinion about KD as I do.

And let's also be real. The money coming in annually for ownership is pretty good.

2015:
-Nike signs 8 years, $1 Billion Contract With NBA as Adidas Walks Away

2014:
-The NBA announced on Monday that it had struck a nine-year, $24 billion media-rights deal with ESPN and Turner Sports.

-Other sponsorship revenue (beer, soda, fast food) for the National Basketball Association and its 30 teams totaled $679 million in the 2013-2014 season, up 5.7 percent from the previous year

2013:
-The 30 NBA teams collectively generated a combined $628 million from regional sports networks and over-the-air stations.

That's before what they are seeing at the gate each game.
