J.R. Smith on Regretting Opting Out of Contract: ‘Yes and No’

View media item 1638471

July 21, 2015 I By Marcel Mutoni

Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith made the curious decision this summer to opt out of $6.4 million in the last year of his deal.

Smith has yet to secure another contract, and admits that he sort of regrets taking such a gamble.

Smith averaged 12.7 points and made 39% of his three-pointers in 46 games with Cleveland last season, and says he’ll be meeting with the Cavs’ front-office folks this week to figure it all out.

Per the NEOMG:
“That’s always part of the gamble of opting out,” Smith said on Monday at the Four Seasons hotel in Las Vegas, where the NBA players’ union held its summer meeting.

Asked if he regretted his decision to decline his contract option, Smith said “Uh, I mean, yes and no. [...] No because I’ve gotten offers that I wanted, I mean numbers that I wanted, it’s just different situations,” Smith said. “Right now it’s just a matter of seeing what the Cavs come back to me with. Right now they give me the best opportunity to win.”

Smith’s agent, Leon Rose, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. It is believed Smith was seeking somewhere in the $7 million to $9 million range annually, and he declined to disclose which teams his offers may have come from. [...] There are only three teams in the NBA that still have the cap space to give him a raise from last year: the Portland Trail Blazers ($16.4 million in cap space); Philadelphia 76ers ($16.3 million); and Indiana Pacers ($11.5 million).

I'm not sure of the last player I've seen lose himself so much money in back to back contracts.

In NY he was on his way to getting at least the Tyreke Evans deal after he won 6MOY and then he becomes a bonehead in the playoffs.

****** talking about he has offers from other teams.

They gonna lie and use the Kings angle too? It's too late.

man... had to re-watch the Pacer/Pistons brawl

that **** was hilarious

I'll never understand why a 5'9 overweight fan thought he could fight a 6'8 260 pound Ron Artest.

That fight was one of the many jarring examples of how idiotic the majority of sports fans are.

Like a dude almost got decapitated on television because he tried to run up on Jermaine O'Neal.

Two possible explanations come to mind - (1) he had severe case of little man complex; (2) alcohol

That and he probably don't think Artest would have the balls to hit him because he's a professional athlete.

Some of these fans feel untouchable.

that whole 'customer is always right' steeze

that way of thinking will get you touched up

I think when the cap explodes, and players are getting paid crazy money, they'll be far too content to agree with the NBAPA and opt out of the CBA when the time comes for lockout.

Silver isn't Stern, I don't think he's going to let a lockout happen.

He's shown himself to be far less hardheaded and more progressive, it's in the best interest of the league to avoid a lockout and keep the players, not owners happy.

There are a lot of these fans that drive from every pocket of the state, even those towns with like 429 people where you'll drive through and there will be ZERO cell service, that trek to these games and don't even view athletes as real people - just the live version of something they know so much about that knows nothing about them.

And that would have to be a conducive mindset to them doing things they wouldn't ever do outside of groupthink/mob mentality behavior - which is probably more volatile in the case of a person who has disassociated from the famed athletes. Dunno if anything I said just made sense but it's written so it's wrote.
