NBA leaning toward not guaranteeing playoff spot for division champion

NEWARK, N.J. -- A division title might soon mean a banner but no assurance of a playoff spot in the NBA.

Commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday the league is leaning toward not guaranteeing a postseason berth to a team that wins its division, forcing clubs to finish in the top eight of their conference if they want a shot at the title.

Silver had already said he expected a change from the current format that guarantees division winners no worse than the No. 4 seed. But after discussions with both the competition committee and board of governors, he believes the change will go further than that.

"First of all, it's never happened before that a division winner did not finish within the top eight, and our basketball analytics folks calculate that there's less than a 5 percent chance that it would happen," he said before taking part in a panel discussion at the Beyond Sport United program.

"Where we are leaning right now is that we would not guarantee a spot for a division winner in part because it's so unlikely to happen, and No. 2 if it does happen it would be potentially confusing to fans. No. 3, you would be displacing a team that did have a top-eight record."

Portland got the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference last season by winning the Northwest Division, but the Trail Blazers would have been seeded sixth by win-loss record.

As a result, the Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs, two teams vying for the second seed on the last night of the season, met in the first round of the playoffs.

That sparked new calls to throw out the protection for division winners, and Silver said after the owners' annual summer meeting in Las Vegas that change was coming, though they wanted more time before voting on it.

"So while we're going to continue to discuss it a little bit more -- we need to make a decision before the preseason begins -- I think the greater likelihood is we will not be guaranteeing a spot to a division winner," he said Wednesday.

It's whatevers. They need to just do top 16 do away with the conference ish. It's not like a division winner will fail to make the playoffs. Just the seedings will be different in the scenario they are going to do.

Never understood the Jimmer hype, outside of seeing games at BYU on T.V. Only seen him play on T.V. once and it was bad. He checked in at the 9:30 mark (2nd quarter) and played deep into that quarter. And he never touced the ball. Talking about inbounding after a made shot, bringing it up court, giving the ball to the ref after a foul was called -- nothing. Never mind taking a shot. We had to rewind the game several times to make sure what we were seeing was real. Would never that was possible in an NBA game for a guard. It's like he was playing defense on his own team.

I hope coach Pop has plans for him in San Antonio. Really want to see what the hype is about.

I always thought Adidas just should stick with soccer. It's a perfect sport for Adidas.

Udonis Haslem Purchased Gorgeous Home for Woman Who Raised Him
2 days ago
by Jesse Reed

It’s always touching when we hear about big sports stars who give back to the people who helped them succeed. Such is the case for NBA star Udonis Haslem of the Miami Heat, who recently bought a home for the woman who raised him.

Barbara Wooten is Haslem’s step-mother. She took care of him as a child while his biological mother battled drug addiction, as TMZ reports regarding this heart-touching story.

“Now, we’ve learned Haslem has hooked up Barbara with a brand new $326k pad in Miami Gardens — it’s 6 bedrooms, 4 baths, 3,640 square feet … and Haslem foot the bill.”

When asked about his gesture, Haslem responded:

“I am blessed that God has provided me the opportunity and ability to provide for my family. I wouldn’t be here without her. She raised me since age 3. I can never repay her and all I can do is show my gratitude.”

With so many negative stories coming out of the sports world these days, Haslem’s generosity is like a gentle, aromatic breeze that ushers them out of our consciousness. Here’s hoping for more stories like this one in the days to come.

I always like Haslem. A hard worker with a great heart.

I think that black uni in the pic may be for the Jazz, not Suns.

Also, TBH, I kind of like that Skrillex/Diplo song that the Biebs sings on. :wow:
