That Joe Johnson deal may actually get done.

Nets are gonna pay 44 mil in luxury taxes this year because they're a repeat offender.

44 mil in luxury tax payments for a team that barely made the playoffs last year & lost in the first round?

They trade Joe for Haywood + Andy, they can wipe virtually all of that salary off of their books & avoid the lux tax completely. They'd be saving over 40 million dollars.

This is why I didn't think picks would be needed.

 at dude's taxes alone being damn near ten times my annual salary

but why does he pay taxes to so many different states?

because he works in so many different states
as in every state the pirates travel to during away games they pay taxes to?
Yup thats how it works. This is part of the reason why Texas and Florida have a leg up on other states in Free Agency, because half of the games the players play are not subject to state income tax.

I really don't think that the Cavs adding Joe Johnson makes them any better. He won't do much more there than Earl did. Just another guy to stand on the perimeter and wait for LebLeb to throw him the ball ... and to take touches away from Love. I wonder if Love will regret re-signing with the Cavs when he winds up the 4th option there next year?

JJ is the most dependable perimeter player on that team (not counting Kyrie). Lesser role, just needs to make open shots and create his own shot when LeBron is on the bench. I like it a lot. Can count on him more than JR.

I think he'll be better than JR. Much better at finding his spots on the floor and not a walking time bomb. While Joe is not the most efficient player in the NBA, I consider him a little more discipline than JR.

Unlike Earl Jr, Joe can actually create his own offense consistently.

RT @JaredZwerling While the Grizzlies are still in the mix with PG Mo Williams, another team to emerge, I'm told, could be the Spurs. PG Cory Joseph moved on.

Pau on Marc Gasol...

Marc Gasol appears prepared to reveal whether he’ll play with the Spanish National team this summer before he’ll officially re-sign with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Gasol’s big brother, Pau, added more intrigue Monday when asked why Marc had not yet signed a new contract with the Griz or another franchise since the NBA free agency period began July 1.

“He has not signed because the decision has to do a bit with the team,” Pau told Spanish publication Marca during an appearance at his Popular Pau Gasol Academy.

Marca also reported that Marc will announce Tuesday his decision about playing for Spain at EuroBasket later this summer. It is widely believe that Marc won’t participate. Pau already declared his intentions to play.

And, of course, Pau’s remarks about Marc create more questions than answers about the process surrounding Marc’s free agency.

Teams can’t officially sign contracts with players until Thursday when the NBA free-agent moratorium ends. Players have been able to only give verbal commitments to teams.

But there hasn’t been a peep from Gasol or his camp. Even so, the expectation is that the All-Star 7-foot center will return to the Griz.

So what’s the holdup in what figured to be a no-brainer negotiation?

Memphis can offer Gasol the most money of any team – a five-year maximum salary deal worth more than $100 million.

Is Griz owner Robert Pera balking at that deal?

Gasol argued hard for a full maximum deal from the Griz in 2011. Then-owner Michael Heisley refused to tender a five-year offer and compromised with a four-year, maximum deal worth $58 million. And the deal didn’t have an opt-out clause.

Heisley was concerned about Gasol’s durability, a source with intimate knowledge of those negotiations told The Commercial Appeal.

Is it indeed possible that Gasol insists on a short-term deal?

Are the sides haggling over an opt-out clause? Do the Griz want the emerging face of their franchise to commit for the duration of the contract?

Is there another move or two in store for the Griz whether it be a trade or minimum contract signing?

Could Gasol be waiting to see how a final roster looks before he officially signs on?

Gasol and Cleveland’s LeBron James are the last of the big-name free agents who haven’t officially signed with their respective teams. ESPN.com reported that James won’t talk with the Cavs until a new contract for restricted free agent Tristan Thompson is in place. James’ agent also represents Thompson.

Gasol shares an agent (Arn Tellem) with All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who joined the San Antonio Spurs last weekend.

Could a Gasol decision be near now that San Antonio is no longer a viable option for the Spaniard?

Hurry up and wait.
