@briancmahoney: Adam Silver said no decision yet, but NBA leaning toward not guaranteeing a playoff spot at all for a division winner.

:rolleyes :rolleyes

For NFL, since the divisions play each other twice, it makes sense for the division winner to make the playoffs. Doesn't make sense for the NBA. Why not have the top 8 of each conference?

i saw this on another forum and thought i'd bring it here. don't know if it deserves it's own thread or not.

basically a poster took the 6 main contenders in the western conference (warriors, clippers, thunder, spurs, grizzlies, rockets) and ranked them based on position group. i don't know how much emphasis was given to the backup though. Example: Chris Paul is better than Ty Lawson. But, are Chris Paul AND Austin Rivers collectively better than Ty Lawson AND Patrick Beverley?

how would you rate out these position groups?

POINT GUARDS

Warriors - Steph Curry and Shaun Livingston
Thunder - Russell Westbrook, D.J. Augustin, and Cameron Payne
Rockets - Ty Lawson and Patrick Beverley
Clippers - Chris Paul and Austin Rivers
Spurs - Tony Parker and Patty Mills
Grizzlies - Mike Conley and Beno Udrih

SHOOTING GUARDS

Warriors - Klay Thompson and Leandro Barbosa
Thunder - Dion Waiters and Anthony Morrow
Rockets - James Harden, Marcus Thornton, and K.J. McDaniels
Clippers - J.J. Redick, Jamal Crawford, and Lance Stephenson
Spurs - Danny Green and Manu Ginobili
Grizzlies - Courtney Lee and Tony Allen

SMALL FORWARDS

Warriors - Harrison Barnes and Andre Iguodala
Thunder - Kevin Durant, Andre Roberson, and Kyle Singler
Rockets - Trevor Ariza, Corey Brewer, and Sam Dekker
Clippers - Paul Pierce and Wesley Johnson
Spurs - Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Anderson, and Matt Bonner
Grizzlies - Jeff Green and Vince Carter

POWER FORWARDS

Warriors - Draymond Green, Marreese Speight, and Kevon Looney
Thunder - Serge Ibaka, Nick Collison, and Mitch McGary
Rockets - Terrance Jones and Donatas Motiejunas
Clippers - Blake Griffin and Josh Smith
Spurs - LaMarcus Aldridge and David West
Grizzlies - Zach Randolph and Brandan Wright

CENTERS

Warriors - Andrew Bogut and Festus Ezeli
Thunder - Enes Kanter and Steven Adams
Rockets - Dwight Howard and Clint Capela
Clippers - DeAndre Jordan and Cole Aldrich
Spurs - Tim Duncan and Boris Diaw
Grizzlies - Marc Gasol and Jarell Martin

also, if you feel i'm missing a player in a position group, or have misplaced a player go ahead and fix it if you'd like.

discuss.

I wavered back in forth on quite a few. I had a hard time deciding which approach I wanted to go with, either what I know someone will do based on tendencies and what I've seen thus far, or what I believe someone can do based on potential.

Put Wright where Jarell Martin is at (C)

Jeff Green where Brandan Wright (PF) is at and Matt Barnes where Jeff Green at (SF)

PG's - Thunder
SG -Rockets
SF - Warriors
PF - Spurs / Clippers
C - Grizzlies (with Gasol and Wright)

ohhh i understand now. you wanted to rank all the teams

well we pretty much had the same #1's

i believe my rankings would be pretty much the same after looking at yours. I'll move LAC to the last spot amongst centers and make GSW #5 (moves OKC up to #4). i thinkk that's the only change.

yeah my fault for the lack of clarity. that's why i didn't know if i should make a separate thread or not.

Stars in any era can prosper in any era. It's the role players that you'd have to question.

Any big back then that made their career out of hard work and physical play but are one dimensional and can't shoot would suffer in today's league. Stretch bigs that make their career out of finesse and helping to stretch out the defense and maybe be that extra ball handler would have less of a place back in the day.

Middle tier scoring guards of today might have a hard time back in the day because of the physicality and hand checking.

Short, less athletic guys who made their careers out of spot shooting like Steve Kerr would have a harder time in today's game.

But like I said, top players in any era will be able to adjust. They're just that good.
