Questioning Bozo the Clown: Sam Hinkie

http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2015/08/01/sheridans-top-10-free-agents-aug-1-edition/

So the month of August begins with another head-scratcher award for Sam Hinkie.

The mad scientist in Philadelphia had earned plenty of props on this site for his acquisition of three rotation players — Jason Thompson, Nik Stauskas and Carl Landry — along with a first-round pick and the right to swap two additional two first-round picks with Sacramento in the early-July deal that allowed the Kings to clear the cap space to sign Rajon Rondo, Marco Belinelli and Kosta Koufos.

The thinking here was the Thompson would be able to back up both Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel at the power forward and center spots, the latter being his natural position despite his size, the former being the position he has spent the most time at during his NBA career.

kickingcanBut just 22 days later, Hinkie kicked the can down the road once again by dealing Thompson to the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors in exchange for cash and “draft considerations.”

The Sixers’ official announcement of the trade did not even specify exactly what those “draft considerations” were, but news was eventually leaked that Philly now has the opportunity to swap the lesser of Miami or Oklahoma City’s first-round pick for Golden State’s pick next June.

Couldn’t the Sixers have included that nugget of information for their fan base? This latest incarnation of what seems to be a “say as little as possible” strategy simply makes no sense.

Nor does it make much sense as far as the primary components in the deal. Wallace is finished as an NBA player, and the educated guess here is that he receives a buyout from Philly and never appears for a single moment in a Sixers uniform.

Wallace is on the books for $10.1 million in the upcoming season, whereas Thompson is due to make $6.43. So the Sixers lose $3.5 million worth of cap space in this deal, giving up a player who could have helped in exchange for a player who hasn’t helped anyone in three years.

This making any sense to anyone?

Well, don’t hold your breath waiting for an explanation from Hinkie or the Sixers organization. Three weeks after delivering the bad news, they still have not even said whether Joel Embiid has undergone his latest foot surgery … or even explained how Embiid broke the foot. Or why Embiid was spotted at Las Vegas summer league traipsing around without a walking boot. A question: If you were a Sixers season-ticket holder, wouldn’t you want some answers to these most basic questions?

Maybe Peter May was right:

The guy is leaving me scratching my head.

coleIt has already been reported by our Michael Scotto that the Sixers have been speaking with the representatives of restricted free agent Norris Cole, who would be a nifty acquisition if the Pelicans allowed him to leave. Not that New Orleans wants him to leave, but the kid is going to be stuck behind Jrue Holiday for the forseeable future if he stays in the Crescent City, and the Sixers could probably get him — and keep him — if they tendered an offer sheet with a first-year salary of something in the area of $8 million. Matching that offer would make the Pelicans a luxury tax team, which they don’t want to do.

Cole would probably be amenable to signing a three-year deal in which only the first year’s salary was guaranteed, and the Sixers could effectively put him on a well-paid, one-year tryout to see if he could beat out Isaiah Canaan and Scotty Wilbekin — and maybe even help the Sixers win a few games.

hinkieAt a certain point, Hinkie has to establish a culture of winning, and Cole could be a catalyst. But as August begins, the Sixers appear ready to roll out the tank again and play for ping-pong balls. They own the Lakers’ pick (protected 1-3) along with their own pick, Miami’s and Oklahoma City’s — and now the right to swap one of those two for Golden State’s pick. The latter two teams figure to be in the playoffs, so Hinkie will likely have two lottery picks. That’s nice.

But why isn’t Hinkie going for players in free agency who could help now and possibly becoming long-term assets? Why didn’t Hinkie use one of his five second-round picks on Cliff Alexander of Kansas, who was a projected top 5 pick before losing his eligibility at Kansas?

Neil Olshey of Portland, no dummy, went out and scooped Alexander up. Why didn’t Hinkie strike first?

I still think Hinkie’s long-term plan is a brilliant one, building a team of young studs that can grow together and compete for multiple titles a half-decade from now when LeBron James will be on the wrong side of 35.

But again, at a certain point you have to instill a winning culture, and you have to speak honestly to your fan base. Right now, he is doing neither. And that is just shameful.

Think Thompson was a little excited to be getting out of Philly?

Check out his tweet from after the trade was announced:

NYC isn't the Mecca. MSG is called the Mecca. NY wanting to claim everything extended it to the whole State.

The arena is famous for various reasons but basketball? If opposing players coming to town baking the Knicks makes it the Mecca then hey, I guess it's the Mecca.

In today's Internet age the world is smaller and everyone knows the best basketball players don't come from NY. An NY basketball history sucks in modern times. Calling NY the Mecca of basketball is a very hollow claim.

NY sucks at organized basketball.

That Hinkie article definitely brings up a lot of valid points that I've had about him as well. The whole Embiid thing has been real weird too. One minute I hear he's dominating in pickup games this summer and is a full-go, next minute he "suffers a setback." And that setback was said to be just that the bone didn't heal the way they liked...then all the sudden news comes out that he broke it again and that's the reason he's having surgery? I don't get it.

The Thompson trade also made no sense. I guess they did it so Okafor and Noel can play a ton of minutes and give the rest to Holmes, Grant and hopefully they keep Landry around as a vet. The team badly needs some veterans that have actually been decent and on winning teams at some point in their career.

Norris Cole would be a great addition if we can scoop him up. Hopefully for more than a one year deal though or else he'll ball out this year then be gone next offseason to play with LeBron.

I think Hinkie is creating a sink hole for himself.

At the time the Okafor pick was stupid. But if he already knew Embiid was done for the year again, it was the right pick. Because 2 season ending injuries / surgeries in a row, at that point, it's time to expect little to nothing from Embiid. Okafor was best player available, and filled a new need. So that's fine. Also Lakers taking Russell, also changed the draft for the Sixers, and now Okafor was there, and they needed him.

Then they also have all these 2nd Round Picks, and with the exception of Tokoto, they kept drafting bigs, which are not even needs even with Embiid injuries. So they kept dealing players for nothing but second round picks delaying being competitive, then when that reward comes up, they wasted picks. Why not bunch those 2nds together to move up, and get a better player as opposed to just throwing picks away whether this year or next season's draft. Instead you basically just throw away picks.

But where Hinkie really screwed up is not trying to get this team to turn the corner this year. He did not sign a SINGLE player in Free Agency. No role players, no going after stars, nothing. There's a reason players don't want to go to Philly... they don't believe they even care about winning. And whether you're a star or a role player, you don't want to be on a team that is openly losing. This was the year that they needed to turn the corner, and go toward winning more games. Instead they are still at best a 20 win team, and again no one will sign with that team thinking they will try to lose for another year.

What's the point of tanking again? You have 4 - 1st Round Picks. Sixers, Lakers, Thunder & Heat. 2 of 4 in the lottery. What the hell is the point of not trying to take the team in the right direction when you have 4 - 1st Round Picks regardless on top of your 2 Lottery Picks (3 w/ Embiid). You will still get good players, now you're building a team to be more competitive, and I don't know get actual players to want to play in Philadelphia.

They should have started to fill the team with some veterans, not only to improve the team, but to help Noel & Okafor. With all these young, inexperienced, and in many cases fringe NBA players, you actually do a disservice to Noel & Okafor, and make things harder for them. You need veterans to teach them the ropes, show them things, and be able to produce to take the load off of them.

So rather than having this sexy core of Noel & Okafor, some GOOD veteran role players, you now have an unattractive young core with Noel, Okafor, and guys no one wants to play with.

They are banking fully on Noel & Okafor taking HUGE HUGE jumps when they should have "trusted the process" of an NBA player.

By the time they are a serious NBA team, they MAY be looking at Noel out of his rookie contract, and Okafor halfway through his.

It's fine for Hinkie to have his process, but you have to modify it as you go, and he abjectly failed when this should have been the year that they start to be serious about winning & improvement.

Hinkie is a goofball, he's been position to right this ship for a year and change now, it's not happening.

As long as he keeps this up, he has job security.

Hinkie has no ethics. His brand is bad for business.

Doesn't work like this, especially when none of the other gms in the league respect you. You can't just consolidate mediocre picks and expect a great return. Didn't work for ainge, didn't work for hinkie, hardly ever happens. Not all picks are "assets". People were trying to tell me to look at it as having currency. Nah

Yeah, when you consider infrequently second rounders become contributing NBA players, those picks can't really be considered that valuable. For every Chandler Parsons and Draymond Green, there's like 50 other guys that just quickly wash out of the league.
