Man, that Austin Rivers mixtape made it look like this fool was about to be a stud for real.

i always said..just look at the winterpark competition...there was a reason dude was eatting every game.

he was extra regular when he got to college.

People blaming Hoopsmixtape for producing mediocre nba players?

I guess Slam magazine was to blame for Sebastian Telfair never being the guy.

Or ESPN was to blame for allowing OJ Mayo's games to be on tv

Or the 20/20 interview is to blame for Tyson Chandler never being the best center in the nba.

Everyone of us is guilty from time to time over evaluating a players talent. But if they don't become what we (people who aren't even scouts) expect its their fault or genetics fault. I can't blame a dude with a video camera.

I don't think that's what's going on here at all

we're blaming the viewer who overhypes a highlight montage. If you look at a prep player in real games and come to a conclusion that they will be the next big thing, then fine. But if the Hoopsmixtape video is what you're using to come to that conclusion then that's your fault

Everyday it grows more and more obvious how little people grasp how big of an accomplishment making the NBA is. Let alone being an effective player.
Absolutely.

And part of that comes from the fact that because of Hoopsmixtapes and ballislife, people have been watching these guys since they were 13 years of age so naturally, people are starting to get more desensitized to the process of a prep becoming a pro.

Where do you actually watch high school prospects tho besides mixtapes? I always see guys on here talking like they scout every game from 9th grade on but are those games even available?

International tournaments. u16 to u20. those are all streamed. this years you can go watch. Harry Giles, Josh Jackson and Jalen Brunson do work. also Peach Jam and Nike Global challenge are usually streamed, as well as the jordan international game and the Addidas Nationas.

We have access to HS games at our fingertips more than ever. With ESPN U, ESPN 3, streaming live games, and all the Tournaments these guys play...watching HS ball players is no mystery at all.

Besides that, if you haven't had a chance to view these prep players in a real game, you would think you would take a highlight reel with a grain of salt. If you haven't seen a kid play in a real game, your view of him is limited. Should be obvious but maybe not

I remember seeing Austin Rivers play in high school, kid was on fire.

But seeing Lake Howell play was a treat, man. Calathes, Parsons, and Joey Rodriguez... they were straight RUNNING people out of the gym. Their games would be standing room only.. I remember sitting next to a family who drove like 2 hours just to see them play cause they were huge UF fans. You would have to show up at like the start of the JV game to get good seats.

Austin Rivers was on ESPN and ESPN 2 at least 3-4 times. I was impressed but not to the point where he should have been anointed. I know a lot of NT during that time were not keen on hyping him like other ranking outlets around the country were

I watched a ton of Austin Rivers high school stuff, really thought this guy was going to be the future

I have money on a bet that Seventh Woods will not become a productive NBA player. Seventh Woods and Julian Newman are the epitome of Hoop Mixtape hype going too far.

I had this argument about Seventh Woods just yesterday now that I think about it.
