He was getting those "all league" defense off reputation not performance, the numbers have him as a negative defensively for most of his career.
He had 1 year in 2000 where he was above average, he had 4 more where he was just average and the rest of his career he's been a negative for his team.
So miss me with all that bs you talking.

The idea that they do have more insight than us is why I think we elevate them as writers over us but I've always felt like their status was inflated a bit.
They do work harder to formulate their opinion though. (Interviewing players after games, or like going through leaps and bounds to get a quote from a player, things like that)

I personally don'tI sat with a few writers trading bars about Hoops for hours and what they were saying was no different from what some in here say in regards to hoops.

I used to talk to a writer, well known in So Cal all the time at the gym, he even gave me free tickets to Laker games... he was very knowledgeable don't get me wrong, but his opinions were nothing special
