Had a discussion with some friends about Philly tanking, Minnesota tanking, etc.

If you would have told me in 2000 that the Clippers would be a top 5 contending team in the league from 2011 - until now and that the golden state warriors would be an eventual NBA Champ I would have called you crazy.

Say that to say that you have to build through the draft. "Tanking" works and when done right, can alter a franchise. There's hope for all of these franchises who are in the cellar if they play it right

So LA going to soak up this FA thing I see. These players wait a long time to be Unrestricted I have no problem with the "Decision" tours. :smokin

Visit set up with Raps this week reported. So that is Raps, Spurs, Knicks, Port, Dallas, Houston, Lakers.

Were those teams really tanking though, in the same sense that Philly and Minnesota are? Those Clippers and Warriors teams were legitimately bad with terrible management (Elgin Baylor and Vinny Del Negro  )

edit: oh and cheap asterisk Sterling of course to make it 1000000x worse

sure does.. see Antonio, san..

minny about to be on the come up.. should have done it right though.. as soon as they were gifted wiggins, should have went all in.. trade anyone who could be useful to a contender and only keep the young guys around

Both those teams were gifted their core players (except for Blake)

Lebron being a terrible gm caused the wolves and David stern gave chris Paul to the clippers

Starting to get less mad on the missed opportunity of Kobe, CP3 and Dwight; and looking forward to the present and future of Kobe, Russell, Randle, Clarkson and possible LA.

Larry Nance Jr. on how he'll address No. 24: "Until he says, 'I'm Kobe' he's Mr. Bryant. And Sir."

Brad Turner ‏@BA_Turner · 6m6 minutes ago
Larry Nance on anti-Kobe Bryant tweet:"I just can't thank him enough for forgiving me."

This kid seems legit terrified of Bean.

No need to kiss his ***. Just apologize and move on. Now you really look like a clown.

Tweet was an awful move to begin with.

theres no difference in tanking and being "legitimately bad".

There's no moral column next to the w's and l's.

Not exactly. They drafted Blake. They drafted DJ. The dubs drafted draymond, steph and klay.

The clips can't get CP if they don't draft eric gordon .

The wolves may have been gifted wiggins but that doesn't happen if they don't hit in the draft and get k love via Memphis

Semantics. Tanking is tanking. If you're bad you're bad and there are serious benefits with being bad

eh I disagree...you have guys like Hinkie trading all their half decent players for picks, sitting on $$$ cap space and putting a terrible team out there to ensure a high pick

on the other hand, you have Isiah signing busts like Jerome James to giant contracts and the team still being bad, or the Knicks maxing out Melo and Amare and it falling apart

so he's actually visiting NY?
Man im like he 90% sure he woulda loved going to NY had they drafted WCS
weak eastern conference + melo maybe rondo LA and WCS would be a fun team to watch .

There's no consequences to deliberately losing games. Hinkle has a great reputation around the league and players are excited to work for the sixers

Yeah true, but I'll still differentiate it by the original goal...being bad to get a good pick or being bad because you tried and failed

But let's be real, Blake/Curry both are generational talents and without them both franchises look very different.

A lot of teams can tank for 10 years and not get those type of players, luck factors in heavily.

Agreed.

The Sixers were a 40 win team every year for a good 6-7 years. I'd rather be a bottom feeder with a chance a future all-star player in the draft than stuck in purgatory. Only delays the rebuild process. You couldn't turn Holliday/Turner/Iggy/Thad/Hawes into a championship team.

CP also might have resisted a trade to LAC if they didn't have Blake. Not that he had the power to stop it completely, but the fact that we had an up and coming star we got through the draft helped a lot.

Basically, however it happens, teams generally need a mix of home-grown young talent and vets to become a title contender. The Heatles were more the exception to that than the rule.

Luck absolutely factors into it but you have to be in it to be lucky.

Tanking to get lucky has its benefits. You definitely have to be lucky, but if you're not tanking you have no chance to get lucky
