you zone a team up that you would rather have shoot from the outside not a team that thrives from it. If you're guarding spaces on the floor, you get your eyes darted by GS.

Basically, a zone actually plays into the Warriors strengths.

Look at the Heat in 2011. That zone rendered Miami's strengths useless which is why they made shooting a priority going into FA that summer

Not exactly.

The Warriors get a lot of their 3's from steph curry drags from screen rolls, dribble penetration, dribble weaves up top, pindowns, Transition, and the like. Essentially, they get most of their 3's from getting the ball below the free throw line and kicking it out after they've collapsed the defense.

Their 3's would have been much harder playing a zone instead of man.

But you're basing that on how they play vs man to man coverage. Unless you can show me some numbers or footage of them struggling vs a zone...how can you say they wouldn't thrive against a zone.

I mean the very point of a zone is to force a team to take outside shots. That's elementary school basic. So I can't see how forcing the #1 shooting team in the whole league into a zone hurts them. I'm not even factoring in having a front court of Barnes, Iggy and dray who all can dribble drive, flash, and cut up that zone.

Zoning GS is the last thing you'd wanna do, which is probably why you didn't see very much of it all year

I would've mixed it in few times to see if it got the Warriors out of rhythm. It's unorthodox but I feel like that wrinkle could've helped at times.

Perhaps Lebron isn't a think outside the box kind of Coach.
The Zone may not have ever crossed his mind, assuming he was doing most of the substitutions and set calling.

Steve Kerr in 2012 as an analyst

"If a team goes zone, you have to bring your shooters on the floor. If you're too small at the other end with your shooters, you have to figure out a countermove defensively. Maybe you press, maybe you trap with speed. Whatever it is, it's the coaches job to figure out. That's what I love about the game, the back and forth."

The biggest issue with the zone is them not practicing it at all but idk it's so unorthodox in that scenario that I think it works. At the worst you try it for a few possessions and can it, at best, you force Kerr to make another adjustment.

Dope post G.

Don't know how you remembered this but, posting it lets us all know that, Kerr would have ate that Zone business for Breakfast Lunch Dinner and Breakfast.

I remember this same conversation on NBA TV from the 2011 finals. I had to search for the exact quote.

I agree it doesn't make sense, but idk, I feel like the Cavs had nothing to lose and trying it may have actually worked. It's one of those weird things. Going man and watching James Jones get cooked with regularity sure as hell couldn't have been a better option.

you also have to take into account that it means being less physical with Steph. A zone literally is telling Steph and klay "beat us with what you're best at
Without djellabadohava being able to be a pest...Steph might have averaged 40

By no means am I saying the cavs playing zone would have resulted in them winning the series or anything like that. It was simply a suggestion as to how Blatt could hide Kevin if he were playing in the finals.

However, to say someone shouldn't play zone because a zone "invites shooting" is an extremely simplistic way of looking at defense. A Zone may invite shooting, but the warriors led the league in paint points. That in theory, would be cut out a bit with a zone. So yeah they'll be shooting and making perimeter shots, but no team succeeds with a diet full of jump shooting.

If for nothing else, it offers a different dynamic that offers more rest to counteract their lack of depth.

The only thing Cavs could have done to win is have a team deeper than 7.

How the hell does Lebron avg 46 minutes for the finals.

That's asking for a loss against a 12 deep GSW, no matter how you combat it.

Kadeem Hardi  Antoine Tyler aint walking through that door.

I agree but Game 4 on Delly wasn't even capable of chasing after Curry anymore and doubling him wasn't effective. Cavs had nothing to lose in game 5 and 6, going nuclear and trying something different might have just done something to prolong the series.

They led the league in 3's too so it's basically pick your poison which is why I thought it was a bad matchup for the Cavs with or without Love/Kyrie. They just have too much depth and too many playmakers. If they run that small ball lineup, that zone is getting penetrated a little easier too.

Gonna be a crazy offseason

Love opting in.. Bron will sign another one year deal

So big 3 locked up plus Andy and Harris/Delly/Mosgov

TT and Shump RFA

Apparently Smith said he's opting out of his 6.4 M for next year but then says he wants to be back..

Haywood's 10.5M contract is gonna be a huge trade piece

24th pick in draft

Marion retired.. Perkins, Miller and Jones might be back.

Brendan makes 10.5 mil?! What am I doing with my life?!

Nah Kobe been the best player in the world from 2003 to 2012. Maybe 2011.

idc what anyone says, from 2008-2011, kobe was behind BOTH lebron and wade.

Dwayne Wade is nasty but cmon man.

You don't play a zone against a team that can shoot
