@alanhahn: Interesting: If last season followed a 1-16 seeding, only one small change: Nets (38-44) out, Thunder (45-37) in. So 9 West, 7 East.

So it's top 8 in each conference?
Yup. Division championship will be used as 2nd tiebreaker though, after head to head record.
The NBA announced today that its Board of Governors has approved a rule modification that will seed the top eight teams in each conference in the playoffs regardless of record. This indeed means that it will be possible for a division to not send single team to the playoffs if none of its teams has a top eight record. But the league says it has never happened before.

The league also changed the tiebreak criteria for playoff seeding and home-court advantage to head-to-head record between two teams with the same record. The second tiebreaker would go to a team that has won its division.

matchups would have been a lot different though.

No cakewalk to the Finals for the East champion

Which will be the first division to:

-not sent a team to the playoff

-Have 4 teams with home court

why even have divisions if its top 8 from each conference? no reason at all whatsoever.

So when Balmer moves the Clippers to Seattle they'll actually have something to hang besides selfies, if they're still any good then.

Because you always play division opponents 4 times per year. While playing some teams in your conference only 3 times.

i guess
they can still use divisions for scheduling purposes, just dont have em exist in the external world. imagine raising a division flag and not making the playoffs lol

That will likely never happen.
x2. it never will unfortunately.

Every sport has some type of stupid conference/division system for determining Playoff teams, and they should all be done away with. But they won't.

Look at the NFL. Every single year you got teams in good divisions missing the Playoffs with good records while some bum team in a bum division makes the Playoffs with an 8-8 record

Of course some dudes are going to twist his answer..."You shouldn't have to say you're the best player in the world"

Also we never heard the question
