Eh, there's always been guys who've tried to be more stylish in terms of on-court apparel. I mean it seems understated by today's standards, but the way MJ wore his knee brace and wristband, and kind of pioneered baggier shorts, was different back then. People started copying that look.
I also remember when I was younger, compressions shorts showing under your regular shorts was a think. And wearing multiple pairs of socks, so they looked extra thick. The colorful stuff now is just a variation and progression of all of that.
