If you look at all the "offense first" teams that have won in the last decade, Colts, Saints, Packers, they all lucked into elite defenses the year they won....
And though the QBs remained consistent the defenses didn't, and the teams continued to fall short.

Having a good defense is always what you want but recently Peyton, Brees, Eli, Warner have all got to the Super Bowl with an average to below average defense.
The defense just cant play overtly bad in the playoffs and good offense helps with that.
