Michael Irvin on Dez Bryant Deal: ‘Thank You Social Media’

Michael Irvin isn’t normally a big fan of social media, but the former Dallas Cowboys great credits the platform for helping Dez Bryant land his recent long-term contract.

Speaking with G-Bag Nation on KRLD-FM 105.3 the Fan on Monday, Irvin lauded social media as a driving force that facilitated the deal:

“It’s not often I’m going to come in and say ‘Thank you social media.’ But you cannot convince me that that did not have some bearing on getting the deal done because once Dez went out with that, ‘I’m putting this on my kids. I’m going to miss that game.’ — listen guys, y’all know what that means for a brother,” Irvin said, via The Dallas Morning News.

Irvin further elaborated:

“To say, you know, ‘I swear to you on my mama and on my daddy’s grave, I’m putting this on my kids, that just means everything. I believe that definitely had an impact, because if he misses a game or two he’s losing $800,000 a game, he could still come back and sign after that and then even force Jerry to give that money. ‘Jerry, you want me to sign? Put it back on some type of way and I’ll get back on.'”

By letting the world know he was undeniably serious about holding out of games, Bryant put immense pressure on Jerry Jones and the Cowboys brass to give him the long-term, guaranteed-money rich contract he wanted.

Many in the media believed Bryant was bluffing, but it’s clear Jones and his team weren’t buying that theory.

Of course, another aspect that Irvin fails to point out is the way agents and “sources” use social media to their advantage by leaking information that sways public opinion. Every rumor that surfaces during these negotiations has been specifically placed in the public eye for a purpose.

Social media is a tremendous tool, not only for athletes like Bryant, but also for their agents. As we all know, however, the platform can also be a graveyard for players who use poor judgement and paint themselves in a horrible corner with opinions and comments made in poor taste.

For Bryant, however, this time his strategy worked out exactly the way he intended.

The Vikings and Adrian Peterson have mutually agreed to restructure the final three years of Peterson's contract. Per team policy, contract details will not be disclosed.

"This agreement is a win for both Adrian and the Vikings and is a positive step toward Adrian finishing his career as a Minnesota Viking," said Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman. "As we have consistently said, Adrian is a valuable part of the Vikings organization and we look forward to his return to the field.”

"I appreciate the Vikings for working together on this restructured contract, which provides additional security for me but also allows opportunities for me to further prove my value to the team and within the NFL," said Peterson. "It was important for me to continue my career in Minnesota, and I cannot wait to get on the field in front of Vikings fans again."

Unless this was orchestrated a long time ago, like around the time he randomly made that appearance at OTAs and was all fine and good with the team and his place on the team... like only three days after he had taken to Twitter and used his pilgrimage to a more secure deal to act like he cared about the NFLPA.

Because I can't figure out:

WHY he would all of a sudden show up for those after digging his feet in for so many months (he never goes to OTAs / or anything voluntary really, that's how it's always been - so why now?)

WHY the Vikings would all of a sudden do this now after he had returned?

The only feasible scenario is that they had agreed to the committment/guarantees that we're hearing about today around the time he appeared at OTAs, but both sides agreed to keep it under wraps and leak it later when the pitchforks wouldn't all be out - (with how fast news moves now, if you stagger the details of a story and report it over time then the people who carry pitchforks on social media care a great deal less, we see this all the time).

So, #Vikings made a sizable two year commitment in guarantees to Adrian Peterson. 2017, when Peterson is 33, not locked. Win-win for both. Minnesota added two years of guaranteed money to what was a totally team-slanted contract of a 30-year old running back. Pretty amazing.

Packers are stacked with young talent at WR. They've got Montgomery, Janis, and Abbredaris waiting in line behind Jordy, Cobb, Adams. I don't see Ted substituting a year of development for a guy whose window is just about closed. Next man up is what Ted does best. I'd imagine the interest is coming from Wayne's end, not the Packers.

Adrian Peterson’s base deal pays $44 million over three years

Before Tuesday, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was due to make $44.75 million non-guaranteed over the next three years. Now, Peterson is due to make less — but he’s likely to earn a lot more of it, with the Vikings or someone else.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Peterson’s new contract has a base value of $44 million over the next three years.

For 2015, Peterson’s $12.75 million base salary (and unearned $250,000 roster bonus) becomes an $11 million base salary that is fully guaranteed, with a $2 million roster bonus due to be paid on July 28.

For 2016, Peterson will earn a base salary of $7.75 million, $7 million of which is guaranteed for injury only at signing. The rest of it becomes fully guaranteed on the third day of the 2016 league year. Also on the third day of the league year, Peterson earns a $5 million roster bonus.

For 2017, Peterson will earn a base salary of $11.75 million, with a $6 million roster bonus due on the third day of the league year.

In both 2016 and 2017, Peterson can earn another $250,000 by participating in the OTA practices and mandatory minicamps.

It adds up to $44 million. It’s $750,000 less than Peterson already was due to make, but the deal requires the Vikings to make early decisions about Peterson in 2016 and 2017, allowing him to either earn his money from the Vikings or to hit the open market early, before the free-agency money is spent and the roster spots are filled.

There also are some potential tweaks to the base value of the deal, both positive and negative. We’ll break those down in a separate post.

Overpaid regardless of today however - Contract's mangled in IFs, so it's impossible to even talk about after a year off from football in spite of him being in better shape than he's ever been in & how that might counteract the typical decline.
 
Guaranteed to the extent that the Vikings can walk away without paying him another dime after this war, so long as they make the decision early in the offseason (there's a designated date)
