What's wrong with being a young "sneaker head"

Older generations love to hate younger generations, whether it's with sneakers, music, etc. Sometimes it's justified, sometimes not. Many older users, especially in General, regret all the money they spent on sneakers and are actually just trying to look out for the younger kids though.

One thing I've noticed from when I first got into sneakers till now is that I'm finding I want more casual and comfortable shoes that can be worn everyday. My tip would be to spend in moderation (if you're 14 you'll probably outgrow your shoes right?) and to expand your tastes from strictly basketball shoes.

damn, listen to this man, he speaks the TRUTH

I was on NT when i was 14, 25 now. At 14 i think i only owned a pair of green/white 4's, and kermits?

but man, i spent a ridiculous amount of money on shoes in HS.

but you know what, do what you want to do, no one here is going to change your mind and you will most likely keep buying shoes, which is fine. you'll probably grow out of it later on. just keep doing you, who cares what everyone else thinks, really. I think the older generation look down on younger kids because they know your just using your parents money as well

OP, I think the reason why older generations like mine hate on yours is because we would like to go back and do things different in our teenage years, I sure would.

A few tips on collecting, since I was in your shoes lining up for sneakers with a bunch of older people. The OG collectors started collecting for the love of the shoes and because they wanted to be different than everybody else. Today's youth want to collect sneakers to be like everybody else. Buy sneakers you like that people aren't on and watch people start buying them later on after you've been had them.

Don't come off as a snob, you don't know everything and you should focus on learning as much from everybody. Doesn't matter who they are, you can learn something from them.

Seriously though, you're in high school. Focus on doing good, be cool with everybody and don't burn bridges. Don't be afraid to (figuratively) whip it out on a chick. One thing I regret is not running through chicks like I now know I could have. Just be confident, friendly, polite to everybody and high school will be fun. Don't be afraid to get into A LITTLE trouble here and there. Have fun and don't worry about things so much.

The moment you think you're better than somebody is the moment you're proving that wrong!

P.S buy Jordan 3's they're :pimp:

Hope this helps, it sure would have helped me when I was in high school.

OP gonna do what he wants to do regardless, but let me drop some facts on you. And before I say this, let me say one thing. There's a thin line between an old head talking ****, and an OG dropping jewels, and that line is respect. (Rafe said that) So let me tell you this

When I was 14 years old I was in your position. Freshman in high school, a little money in my pocket, sexied up every day. I was spending $500 every month on sneakers, and I had no job. I would skip lunch just so I can buy the next shoes. I wasn't trynna be that kid working in best buy or a movie theater just so I can get fresh. I wasn't with that retail ****. That's for the birds. I hustled. When I say hustle, I'm talking about working hard for that almighty dollar. I was hustling hard. I flipped sneakers every week. I would go to my connect, drop 300 or whatever, come back, sit on it for a while, pull a quick trade, then flip the joints I traded for for about 600. $300 profit sounds good right? Nah fam, it ain't worth it. The amount of work it took to make that bread ain't worth it. It ain't worth the hassle either. Imagine being 14, no car, having to skip class to meet a grown *** man across the city to get that paper. Imagine taking the train through the roughest hoods in NY with 2 bookbags on swole because you got size 11 sneaker boxes in em. You think cats, grown men, don't know what you doing? Cats know what you doing. Especially when you get back on that iron horse and they peep you don't have the shoes no more. When they see that, they know you got some cash on you. I had to carry a box cutter in my tube sock, B. For tough situations. And I was never the type to ship **** out and wait for a payment on PayPal. At 14 years old I didn't have a bank account. I stuffed money in a shoebox under my bed. I didn't get a bank account for myself till I was 16.

The profit might seem good, but the hassle you gotta go through to get that paper ain't worth it. Use your money more wisely B. I was 14-17 years old with mad sneakers. I'm a grown man now, granted I still have a lot of sneakers/shoes (I don't grow out of em) but ask me how often I wear em....never. I'm a grown *** man, I have a job that requires business attire. You gotta wear dress shoes B.

You young, so you gonna learn. If you like sneakers, enjoy em. Do it for yourself. Just make sure you setting somethin aside for the future. Don't be that 19 year old with 70 pairs of fly shoes but still taking public transportation. As you get older, you realize that certain things aren't as important as they use to be. I use to care about sneakers, now I care about traveling, seeing different cultures, tasting different foods. Expand your horizons, B. But for right now, have fun with ya money but still be smart. And trust me, I've been through a lot of financial downfalls, but that just sets you up for the future. It's better to go through a financial crisis when you 16, then to go through one when you 25 and living alone. Keep some money aside for a rainy day, my G. And don't let these females make decisions for you. You let these girls get in ya head and you'll be ****** for life. Do what you like. Don't make decisions based on what other females like. If you gotta change urself for a girl to like you, then that ain't the right girl for you. Because next thing you know she's gonna wanna pull out a strap on and get buck , straight facts. You'll be surprised. Don't rush to lose your virginity either, B. Life is so much easier when you a Virgin. Focus on ya grades and ya future. Get good grades, get a scholarship, and stunt on these **** and make cats envy you. Once you see cats envying you, that's when you know you make it. Stunting and breaking necks in sneakers is cool, but Ain't no better feeling when you pull up infront of your school in that all white S class bumping N.O.R.E - Hed "I get head in the whip, but not crashing it"
Cats will be hating on you forever, B and trust me, you'll feed off of that ****. Focus on ya future, fam. Trust me when I say this

Man I spent so much $ on sneakers in middle/HS. Can't say I didn't enjoy it for the time being feel me?

I liked Sneakers from like 8th grade-end of Freshman yr. Then I realized getting a nice pair for Christmas and my bday wasn't cutting my "sneakerhead" thirst so I just wore reebok classics around til like freshman yr of college. By then I had a little bit of money saved up so started buying sneakers again. First Jordans, but I quickly realized how ****** they were made and how OD the prices were. Started getting older SBs and Air maxes I could never afford then. They are made well and I still love them. Sold all the Jordans besides black/red IVs and 07 Metallic Vs. All this by junior year of college. At 22 now, I have a rotation of about 18-20 pairs. Havent bought a pair in 2 years besides Air Max Zeros because I thought they were a great new shoe. I love the ones I have and shouldn't have to buy a pair of sneakers for the next 10 years besides for work.

Can't even imagine buying Jordans now. They are like plastic and for $190 :x

New addiction is Polo and Supreme. But even then I'm still just buying what I like and no impulse buys. Making better money so it's nothing I cannot afford. Still putting enough into my savings account as I move along. Plus my button up and going out clothes are on point. Because that's what's really important at this age.

Just be humble, admit that you have lots to learn, and don't act like a tool. You should be welcomed with open arms.

You were 4 when dudes were waiting months and months for the 20s to release.  And I mean this was the home stretch for Jordan. So when you say forever, most people will clown you since you were really born into the end of Jordan. Actually most "sneaker heads" will clown you if you werent there for the release of the 12 to be honest. Anyway the appreciation that kids have for the 4s, or foams, or whatever was built on the previous generation's feelings toward the next shoe or cw being released.

Now most sneaker heads havent had this feeling in what you would describe as forever. Truthfully any ill respones toward you being a sneaker head boils down to you missing the golden age of shoes.

But this doesnt have to be the case if you take part in the next generation of designs. All of the trash coming out is from people that were designers and fell into the hole to feed hype. This happens with all type of art, design, or culture that rapidly gets popular. There is an influx of people gettin hired to meet the demands, and most of the time it fails.

However if you spent as much money on shoes as learning, designing, and physically creating shoes, then you could change the game. And part of the game is gettin in when you are young and (most importantly) can make mistakes. Those early mistakes are the things that can change the game. To keep it simple...

Why buy em, when you could make em?

I guess to answer your question, why be a young "sneaker head" when you could be more

Most older people get mad at younger cats becuase they see the potentially bad road your going down. They recall the bad purchases or bad experiences

They are projeccting their older wiser views on you ...becuase you are a constant reminder of their young self that they wish they could recapture

if you play ball you get a pass from me no matter what age. my lil nephew is 3 and a half and knows who jordan is. i got him watching penny hardaway highlights on youtube and his dad just copped him those curry UA joints. shoes i would never wear but hes the future. he also got like 4 pairs of J's. whether u ball or not know the history of the kicks u rock and dont be arrogant about it or youre just another beast out here posing.

Flourish young man, we were all into kicks at that age. Nothing wrong with it, we all go thru phases. Once, I graduated college and didn't have time to stunt I began getting less and less releases and then none at all. Of course, one of your grails will come around and you cop and even then you still aren't feeling them and your grails don't even phase you. Sadly, some are still into it real heavy.

Once you get older causal/wearing running shoes casually will take over

Enjoy your youth, I can tell you to invest and save your money for college but youll do what you want.
We were once you and one day youll become us. Old, probably with a few pairs we cant let go and wishing we saved our money

Wait till college hits when you can either get that textbook or the new pair of jays.

I do feel bad for the kids saving up to buy the Jordan's now, dropping 190 retail if they are lucky enough to get a raffle ticket...if not then it's 250+ at a private vendor...Michael Jordan is heartless man especially with the quality of the sneakers that he's putting out compared to the originals

First problem is referring yourself as a *sneaker Head*
mean.gif
agreed, that term sounds so corporate, phony, trite, and banal...

if i were a youth, i'd prefer the term "athletic footwear enthusiast"

Everytime somebody wants to start getting into the hobby and want advice, I always tell them, don't do it.
It's a dumb and expensive hobby. You're paying $200+ each pair!!!!! The Asics Nimbus, one of the top running shoes on the market are $150, but 20 year old retros are $190?????
It's also a huge waste of time. You drive around wasting time and gas entering raffles for a CHANCE to buy the shoes and if you strike out, then what? Waste even more money to give to a reseller.
I love the hobby and it's too late for me as I've been buying shoes for 12 years but there are better hobbies out there.
