Asian On Asian Racism? Have You Experienced Or Witnessed It?

It goes both ways.

The foreign born judge the American born as ignorant to their culture, can't speak the traditional language, etc.

While the American born dislike the foreign born because they are embarrassed of their manners, accents, the way they dress, and the outright racism/discrimination they feel about blacks/Latinos, etc.

Eventually everyone matures up and learn how to respect one another.

this is basically me, when I mentioned I partake in this perceived self-racism.

Like, I spent a life time trying and learning to fit in and assimilate, and you're  gonna come in and make no effort whatsoever to even try to blend in, especially when non asians will automatically look at you and associate us together because of our race.

Thats what usually irks me.

What you guys experience is no different than any other minority group. Black people go through this all day every day with the whole light skin, dark skin, fake hair, real hair, blonde hair, speaking proper=sellout, etc.

Not eem gonna lie, AWWM rustles my jimmies to the max. Ol sellout type thots *shrugs*

Also, there is beef between SE Asian immigrants, especially children of 1st generation immigrants trying to assimilate into Anerican culture.
I'm not even Asian and I hate seeing that but it comes from things I've heard white dudes say regarding it.

I've only known Filipinos and Vietnamese folks and they were all cool as hell. Think there was this one Chinese kid in high school and he was cool too. Never had any bad experiences with Asians......even at work they're some of the nicest people.

:pimp: to the southeast Asian community

What do they say?

I think it also depends on where you live. The schools I went to in SGV were filled with FOBs and ABCs, so there wasn't much or any self hate going on within the Asians. But hearing stories from my Nor Cal buddies being in the more "white" neighborhoods, they often felt alienated.

Yup moving to Cali from the midwest. I only lived in Sac for 1 year before moving out to the suburbs, and going to a school that was named after a Japanese dude and was like 75% asian, filled with FOBs and ABCs, was a huge culture shock to me

Moving out to the white suburbs almost made me feel more comfortable than my 1 year in Sac

I could see how living in white neighborhoods they could feel alienated, espeically if its something new to them. But for me, having basically lived my entire life without an asian group or community around, I kind of knew how to fit in and not feel alienated pretty quickly

I'm just wondering, what's your definition of "fitting in"

Definitely depends. Being a FOB in SF is actually ok in certain schools. My girl went to the best high school in SF and it's like 80% Chinese if you can believe it or not and majority are very cultured. For the most part, grades and knowledge is what gave you some sort of popularity there where as my high school (in the Richmond Unified School District though), none of that was a factor in being "cool".

What's funny too is I had dinner with my girl and her friends and I am so uncultured that I left my chopsticks in the rice bowl whole scooping some more food and like 4 girls practically screamed at once. I didn't even get it but they told me the Chinese bad luck and I had no idea.

thats a good question and I guess its a bit subjective, but I primarily assimilating to the culture, society, and interactions with people in general
So you were more comfortable fitting in with White culture right?

At my high school, there were 3 cliques with the Asians.
One was the people that partied hard and did drugs.
Two were the people that were in all the AP and honor classes.
Three were the FOBs

It's just bad manners also to leave chopsticks like that in a Chinese household.....but idgaf

Over time, yes.

Don't get me wrong, until the age of 7 or so, I spent alot of time in Hong Kong.

Probably about 40% of my life up till that point was spent there.

English was my second language.

By the time I started kindergarten and elementary school there was definitely a lengthy period of me feeling very alienated.

Eventually the biannual visits to HK stopped (until a few years ago) and I had to learn to "fit in" to a 99.9% white community.

I'm sure this doesn't sound ideal or self-respecting, but it is what it is.

I dont know how it is okay to say AWWM is bad. Had you been one of those white guys who thinks interracial relationships are bad then you would be chastised.

The Filipinos that don't consider themselves Asian are just wannabe sellouts. I've said this many times in other threads. It's an insecurity issue propagandized by pop culture. They don't want to be associated with Asian because Asian is associated with, nerd, goofy and so forth. But they're quick to identify with Asian icons like a Bruce Lee. Same goes with East Asians that don't consider Filipnos Asians and disrespect them. But soon as Pacuiao became a global phenemonon, they're Asian now.

Ask any Filipino from the Philippines, they ain't gonna call themselves no damn Pacific islander. People want to be whatever when it suits them.

Is that why Filipinos are partial to black men? Filipina girls love me and I could never figure out why. It's one of those things where I just didnt question. Like if it started raining money or something.

This is the thing I don't get. I am sure a lot of guys would love to bag a certain race but sometimes certain races from men to women to harmonize right. I don't think you should have beef with Asian women because of that. I am not partial to any race but I know I would have a hard time dating a black women. For the most part, I don't even think black women find Asians attractive compared to other races and I can't hate on them for being that way. It's just a difference in race and culture and sadly some mesh better than others.
Honestly I question how much of that has to do with race. I think it is more to do with culture. Just ask african guys. Black american women wont give us the time of day until they see us with a white woman. Then it becomes a problem. Even I can't get with a black woman and it's not because of lack of trying. Then one day I just said **** it. Most Africans will tell you the same thing.

Not it's fine, nothing wrong about it
Just to be forced to be someone that you are really not is foreign to me
I'm just glad I live in an area that is very accepting

I look at it more as being a product of your environment, for lack of a better term.

A lot of it goes into your personality too, might be a flaw of insecurity of some sort tbh... it probably is now that I think about it some more

I try to spend some time in England/Europe every year to visit old college roommates, and I pick up on their accents, speech patterns and unique terms relatively quickly. It drives my friends back home crazy when I come back from my trips

On the Filipino girls, beats me. Ask them. But for Black women from my experience growing up, they feel you dudes from Africa ain't got no flavor or style. And the robotic accent just ain't their tea.

At my school's rec center, the Chinese dudes from China play pick up games by themselves. While the Chinese Americans tends to play with the rest of the general population. Its a weird dynamic

I've been here since I was 9. Before that I lived in england, before that I lived in Switzerland. The accent thing is eh. As for style I'll clown almost everybody.

But it really don't bother me anymore. Just don't come at me with that "So you think you are too good" ******** when I'm courting my asiatic and porcelain princesses. Cuz I will serve you.

Your girl went to Lowell?  The only other High schools that are heavily chinese like that from what I remembered were like Galileo or Lincoln.  That's crazy I would've never known about chopsticks in the rice bowl thing either.

I experienced this playing ball at the 24 in SF. lol

Or the FOBs would form their own team to play the others
They would either suck or be real good

i roomed with an asian dude, and boy did he dislike fobs, not outright or blatant but sly jabs

i never understood that, fobs look exactly like an american-born asian

It's not the way they look more more so the way they act or even sound. But other Asians can tell an American born to a non one, especially the fob ones. If I went to China, I heard I would stick out like a sore thumb.

I was guilty of making fun of fobs when I was younger. That all stopped when I went to a Filipino conference in college and heard people who moved to this country talk about their struggles and wanting better lives for them and their families. They just wanna flourish like everyone else. I dunno if I could move to a new country and start over like they did.

We gonna link up and get some dim sum at 888 Seafood in Rosemead or something, fellas? I break bread with all cool cats.

There's an old view from the homeland that all white men are rich  that and they can let you stay in the USA legally. You'd be surprised how much folks are willing to pay for fake marriage so they can get that green card. But I digress.

i hit up the 626 from time to time to check out some food spots. most of the time im the only non asian guy in the spot but i dont mind since i know those are the authentic spots haha

and for the right amount of money i would probably marry a chick who needs those papers

You're basically American, lol. I thought you were a recent immigrant or something. Why wouldn't Black girls dig you then?
