SO I GOT BANNED FOR NOT TIPPING LOL

wonder if these waiters in LA/SF will still be asking for tips when minimum wage goes up to $15.00

People saying the owners should pay the waiters more would cry if they did and upped the price to pay their waiters 10 an hour or whatever you think is the right amount to give a waiter.

But here's the key difference:

The price of a meal is the price of a meal. Someone displeased by that price would simply have to either shut the hell up and pay it or not eat there.

Adding the tip into the price from the start eliminates the part of the affair where the patron has an option and can make a choice based on their individual outlook. Giving someone two perfectly legal options and then condemning one of them makes no sense.

If everyone is supposed to tip anyway, then don't pretend that they have the option not to; build that right into the menu and let the only decision people have to make be whether they want to eat there still or not.

Waiters in SF get $12.25 an hour plus tips, so waiters in major cities are not struggling. Even in small restaurants, waiters take home $100+ on average a night. That's less than 5 hours shifts. Can't imagine what top Michelin rated restaurant waiters make a night.

But then the waiter or waitress really has no incentive to offer you good service, since they will get paid regardless

I implied that at least once every day, or every few days (assuming he regularly leaves his home for multiple hours), he passes by someone who could use his help. I implied that he doesn't help every single one of those people that he comes across and thus he should hop down off of his high horse. I never implied that I knew the exact number. Are we done here or are you gonna continue riding my jock for reasons unknown?

they dont currently have any incentive since they expect tips and get mad when they dont get tipped

now they can carry on doing average work while not getting mad over tips

so i guess every other fairly paid worker in america has no incentive to do a good job because they dont get tipped

americans use the dumbest logic to defend their stupid ideals

It's pretty ridiculous that people are throwing such personal attacks at the OP. Dude said he usually tips based on service and in this instance he didn't feel it was warranted. He didn't say he never tips. It really isn't good for dudes to act this irrational and emotional over something so trivial. When people decided to get personal, this thread stopped being funny and just became sad.

Thats not a good excuse. Alot of people work hard on a base salary with no incentives (tips/promotions). If the waiters do a bad job consistently, then fire them just like everyone else...

The incentive should be the fact that they applied for and accepted the job. The issue of them not making a liveable wage wouldn't be a factor anymore, so the trade-off would be the creation of a standard expected quality level of service and not being able to have those good days where they make hundreds off of tips.

Their choice; either take that liveable wage and less "incentive" to do their job properly, or accept this current system that allows them to potentially make a good amount of money for quality work but allows people to not tip if they want to.

But in Cali they make a livable wage so it's moot in this case

12.00 dollars a livable wage? In California?

When a person decides to go out to eat in this country, they are entering into a sort of contract if you will. Anyone who has eaten out in Europe can attest to this, their prices are ridiculous, I am talking 40% increasw for food costs alone and gratuity is included I believe. Needless to say the reason you can take your girl out for a decent meal that is less than 50/60 bucks is because the system is based on you tipping.

I tip, generously.

That being said, tipping is one of the dumbest American customs.

Customers shouldn't dictate how much an employee earns.

...and you waiters and servers could eat a fat one. Maybe save some money from the "good days" instead of *****ing, moaning, crying about the bad days. Talk to your boss about getting a legit wage instead of tips.

Im pretty sure if the waiter doesn't make enough tips to equal minimum wage than the restaurant owner has to make up the difference

Don't like the entitlement part of it.

Even tipping at bars. I feel obligated. $6 beer, here's an extra buck or two for taking off my bottle cap, even though I have a bottle opener in my pocket (keychain). $10-15 mixed drink, here's another $3-5. Price gouging at its finest.

This thread rustled my jimmies.
