Asian Culture Discussion Thread

Has anyone here had issues with their identity like they felt they weren't American enough and/or not Asian enough? Like you're stuck in the middle. How did you overcome it or find a way to accept it?
I'm guessing this question is more for those who were born/raised in America, but I guess it does affect immigrants as well. And when I say Asian, I'm referring to whatever E or SE Asian country you or your family is from.

Just wanted to hear some thoughts on the topic. Thanks.
Good question, it's been covered throughout this thread.

As a first generation Asian-American, I resented my heritage growing up and as I hit college, I embraced it and now love it. At the end of the day, you can't change the color of your skin or your ethnicity. People will always have preconceived notions about you, but I won't catch this L just to appease them.

And everything gets thrown out of the window when I speak that smooth Spanish to the mamis, connect seamlessly with almost everyone from different backgrounds, and see how I carry myself. I never let my skin color dictate who I am, how I should act, who I associate myself with, and who I give the deep strokes to.

Most Chinese people living here in Cali are from southern China (which is why you usually only hear Cantonese here). The only people I personally know that speak Mandarin are Taiwanese, bilingual Chinese, and a couple of my friends that were grad students that ended up staying here permanently
There's been a huge wave of mainland Chinese coming to the USA over the past 15 years. Theyre buying up a lot of the new homes.

Like what was said aabove, I don't allow myself to be limited because of my race or skin color. While I embrace my culture fully, I also love to believe that I am of no color and just a human being that welcomes all shapes and colors of life.

tbh no I never had any issues with my identity, but living in a city that is almost 50% "Asian" (Mostly Chinese ) does help you understand who you are.

i struggle with this, and think about this often. for me the issue is because i am living internationally, in asia, without having a second language. not "looking" american at first glance to my coworkers and colleagues (predominantly white), but not "asian" enough to blend in and communicate with locals and others from around the region. i hate to admit that my attitude and mindset has really become my biggest obstacle. trying hard to reserve my judgements and perceptions, making an effort not to make generalizations about the people that surround me. i think for myself, the best call to action and most responsible way to move forward and progress is to understand that everyone else is human like me, and if i can view everyone through that lens, perhaps i can be happier and more successful with my interactions with other people.

What on earth?

The little Asians I know are some of the biggest foodies out there. They don't mess with chain restaurants :pimp:

There's like 3 chains I like. Most times I go to new places to change the ambiance and vibe.

I know I'm way late, but Sizzler is akin to Applebee's and Thais love some Sizzler. You can't deny that.

I only like Yardhouse and TGIF. And of course In n Out. Sometimes Taco Bell. Other than that....meh

Someone help me understand something. Re: Filipinos

1. The country is PHillapines, but why are the people Filipino? Ph vs F?

2. Are Filipinos considereed Asians by all? Because I remember reading something a few years ago, might have been on here, that they don't.

*Philippines

Considered part of Southeast Asia, but there are plenty of folks that are Filipino or otherwise like like to say Pacific Islanders.

1. I don't get it, either. Some folks still write with the PH and some with the F. I stick with the F.

2. I consider myself Asian.

Man, when I was still in high school 8 years ago, I was playing ball with friends, when this Filipino guy called me a Chi*k and said f Asians.

I was like word, you're technically Asian too.
Son then said, " Nah, I'm Mexican, I'm not Asian hurr durr"

Ph is for the country

F is for people and things
Filipino
Filipina
Filipino cuisine
Etc

I think the biggest difference between the Phillipines and other asian nations is that The spanish ruled the Philippines for 300 years and you can see the influence.

The way some look.
The last names......Reyes. ..rivera.....cruz....etc
lots of other things

Philippines is the anglicized version of Filipinas...........originally named after King Philip II of Spain as Las Islas Filipinas........hence people call it the P.I. for philippine islands

in the mainland people call it Pilipinas though because pinoys rather say p than f

filipino = masculine and or can be used for both sexes
filipina = feminine

1. I honestly have no idea.

2. For the most part yes, but some will say they're Pacific Islander and not Asian.

Two of the more annoying things:

1. Filipinos who hate it when you call them Asian
2. Taiwanese who hate it when you call them Chinese

:rolleyes
