Asian Culture Discussion Thread

California born Filipinos don't mingle with Philippine born Filipinos. It's probably different in other states. But I grew up distancing myself from FOBs cause it was the mentality we all had.

I do know people in the Philippines will classify themselves as Asian. Only people I know that get all crazy with the Pacific Islander classifications are people who believe they have ties back to an island in the pacific (yes even if that island is the state of Hawaii).

I think that goes for most ethnicities, just two way different cultures from the motherland to America. Technically, yes, the Philippines is a chain of islands in the Pacific. But so is Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. But to claim pacific islander (Micronesian, Polynesian, etc) ethnicity, is wrong.

Funny you brought up the hawaiian thing, i know hella Filipinos that claim hawaiian just because they have family that were born there.

Was talking to a Dominican Co worker. She said growing up, she never ate a SIDE of veggies with a meal, outside of it being a salad.

How many of you is this true for?

I remember my non-asian friends would come over to eat and said they didn't like veggies when I was in middle-high school. My mom ended up changing lives forever.

Broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, cabbage, string/green beans, asparagus, bok-choy and many more veggies all involved in some sort of stir fry or slow cooked in some garlic-pepper soy sauce or bean sauce.

My friends couldn't even look at their own moms in the eyes anymore.

Damn. Do their families only know how to prepare lettuce salads, corn on the cob, and mashed potatoes? I don't prepare vegetables often but roasted vegetables are awesome and really easy.

the more time i spend in asia, the more im amazed looking back at how families and friends growing up would eat frozen tv dinner type meals regularly. like pop in the microwave, peel the seal and munch. my mom would buy them here and there as convenience when i was younger and stayed alone and couldn't drive but i could never get into it. even up to now i don't buy frozen foods like that.

This is more a shift in consumption and the influence of Western culture on the East.

Thankfully, I grew up in a family that cooks / owns restaurants.

it's easy to make veggies taste good man, just throw it in a pan with garlic and olive oil and it'll be good

I bought my mom the Amy Chua Tiger Mom book recently.

I asked her what she thought after she finished reading it. She just said the author is a "f---ing crazy bish."

She does seem like it but then I saw how she looked and was like damn she looks good. One of her daughters looks good too.

1. How much brown rice is eaten by your families?

2. Since the West has been on the low carb mentality for about the last 15 years, has the East adopted this mentality or is rice still eaten just as much as it has always been?

Please Respond

Brown rice sucks. Used to only eat it for a few years when I was lean. Definitely won't see it if you go to Asian parties / potlucks. I do see some takeout places or restaurants will offer it as an option.

White rice is a staple in Asian diets.

The only brown rice we know is white rice mixed with soy sauce.

1. 0%
2. Nope

Rice is a damn near necessity at every meal, doubt that will ever change. The only thing I've seen is that some of the younger/carb conscious will eat less or no rice.

I've seen mixed rice congee

And multigrain sushi

But this is a north American thing
