I'm working alongside a fellow intern this summer and for the most part we get along fine. One thing that's started to bug me though is the extent to which they try to make themselves look good in the eyes of management. Not only that, but they jokingly (or are they?) make me look bad. They'll reference times where I made a mistake on the first week of the job and lecture me on certain things in front of others that I already know about.
The thing that really gets me is that I outwork them practically every day. It's not even just my opinion either; I've had a coworker or two tell me about times where they overheard them complain as they did tasks that I regularly do. I don't think management sees this though. They see them answer obscure questions that they learned sitting and talking/reading while I was busy working, or the recognition they and their mentor, the HR manager, always publicly give each other.
It wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for the setting, but since it's an occupation it actually matters. We each have a big presentation later this month and I have a feeling they'll try and one-up me. I've thought about talking to someone about it, but figured they'd make the situation bigger than it actually is or that it'd make me seem pretty desperate.
What's the best way to deal with people like this in the workplace? Does brown-nosing typically have the desired effect or can people usually see through it?
