How to Deal With Suck-Ups in the Workplace?

Suck ups don't matter in the grand scheme of things. People who do that usually don't put out the same quality of work that others do. I never kissed *** a day in my life and I don't ever plan to. I make sure my production is high and that's all that matters. Most higher ups see through those thinly veiled attempts anyway.

However, don't ever let the next man put you down for their own gain. The next time someone tries to playfully scold you, shut it down.

"You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else."

-Albert Einstein

personally I hate people who suck up to me, I notice if you do your job and I like people who don't need to be told what to do time and time again.

Maybe that's just my style.

Do your thing OP and let your work talk for you.

Not only that, but they jokingly (or are they?) make me look bad. They'll reference times where I made a mistake on the first week of the job and lecture me on certain things in front of others that I already know about
I have experience with someone like this. One day I had enough of him doing this to me so I politely asked him if I could have a word outside with him. Got out there and told him he needs to keep my name out of his mouth unless it's for a work request. It was smooth sailing after that.

And there were times where he'd leave a room and the bosses he'd brown nose would tell us the same thing everyone in the thread has been saying...work hard and let your work do the talking. Nobody likes a brown noser. Most people see right through it.

My post is probably going to sound similar to @BLASTERCOMBO's but ya if you want to get ahead in the workforce, especially the corporate world, you need to be building relationships with employers and managers and so on; they're the ones that directly affect your income and promotions and ability to "move up the ladder". The saying it's not about what you know but who you know is a real good example.  One other thought, who looks better, the employee who the boss likes and is visibly working well or the employee who works hard but but doesn't let it show?

Of course you need to be doing this in addition to working hard and making smart decisions but if some people label this as brown-nosing then they might as well be labelled as bitter because of a missed opportunity.

As for your fellow intern, don't let him son you and out work him if you need to.

The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene is a great read.

Nah don't read 48 laws, read Machiavelli's The Prince.

And Sun Tzu's The Art of War.

Stay away from authors like Robert Greene & Rhonda Byrne.

. Google some "Brown nose" jokes there's some good ones out there.

You don't have to kiss *** to be successful in the corporate world. I never did, never will. Just do your job to the best of your ability, work hard, get your **** done, and your work will do the talking to the point you don't have to brown nose.

that really sounds like nothing albert einstein has ever said in this history of mankind ever.

There are a lot of fake quotes on the internet. I looked into that one last night and it seems to be fake too. I just didn't want to say anything.

I don't agree with brown nosing. But I'd be a fool and a hypocrite to say I've never done it at all in my lifetime...

It's about who you know, not what you know.

You'll be laughed at brown-nosing at my job. It's so blatantl, that we brown-nose as a running joke. But there are some that are so politically savvy, it doesn't make sense, and that's where the game changes. In a corporate setting, you encounter people who have gravitas, the ability to develop relationships, and those who understand how to navigate the political landscape within an organizational setting. And then you have those who cannot, and they're not nearly as successful as those who can.

Understand the system, assume to the corporate culture, while challenging the status quo, and work harder than those who are working the hardest.

Welcome to the world of office politics OP ...it only gets worse

Not really. It's a stereotype of white collar work but I wouldn't say it's an ever present thing.

Brown nosers only flourish in office cultures where its beneficial so that means arrogant and egotistical bosses in which case you dont want to be working there longer than you have to.

OP, you know your surroundings better than anyone here. Use your sound judgement. As far as your co-workers using your name, you should confront them about it in a non-combative way one on one and tell them to stop.

Oh my god...

Man NT I have this fat Greek dude I work with and this dude is the brown noser of all brown nosers... ever.

He used to come into work on his day off (Friday) so he could buy our Director at the time lunch.

It's so disgusting man like I don't know how this dude can look at himself in the mirror.

He gets super mad if someone else is talking to or cool with said Director.

The guy drives every morning to pick up and drop off the Director to work.

It was our old Director but he has since moved up higher in the ladder and dude still fetches him lunch every single day not joking.

And he talks like he's this big macho can't be touched John Gotti type dude but in front of the said Director he's like a jester or peasant so to speak.

He's is such a BS artist, but his daughter is smart but is as much a snake as he is, but because of her Fathers sucking up she was able to climb up in the company rather quickly because said Director and plus the VP of the company (suck ups daughter buys the VP StarBucks and whatever else) and they both recommend her on interviews and then the person hiring is put in a tight spot because how do you turn her down and the VP and said Director who is higher now recommends her.

You guys would not believe the level of brown nosing this guy does.
