Eddie Lacy dropped out of practice with 'foot soreness'; McCarthy said no update on Clay Matthews, who has missed practice the past two days

By Rob Demovsky, ESPN Staff Writer

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- On Monday, it was Clay Matthews. On Tuesday, it was Eddie Lacy. Two days and two star players dropped out of Green Bay Packers training camp.

Unlike Matthews, who didn't practice at all Monday because of knee soreness, Lacy's problem actually occurred during practice. He dropped out late in the session and did not return with what coach Mike McCarthy said afterward was a sore foot.

James Starks finished the practice in Lacy's place with the No. 1 offense.

"Eddie had some foot soreness," McCarthy said. "They just pulled him out there near the end."

The Packers were careful this offseason not to overwork Lacy in practice, but when training camp opened last week, Lacy took his usual workload.

The Packers could be thin at running back if Lacy is out for any extended period of time. Rookie John Crockett (ankle) remains on the physically unable to perform list, leaving Starks, Rajion Neal and Alonzo Harris as the only other available backs.

McCarthy said he had no update on Matthews, who also did not practice Tuesday. Matthews spent the early portion of practice inside the Don Hutson Center in rehabilitation before coming out to watch the second half.

The Packers do not practice Wednesday. They have meetings but will not be on the field again until Thursday morning.

Lions fan checking in. Lions gotta play 2nd place teams in the other divisions in the NFC east and south and gotta play all the NFC west man its gonna be tough.. But i like caldwell. He'll get us to the playoffs. Then thats where i question him a bit. Lets just stay healthy and it will be a good year for the Lions

Go Lions

Losing Suh sucks but I expect Ngata be a solid replacement. He can't rush the QB like Suh but we should still be good against the run

Hopefully Ansah takes that leap into an elite DE this year

Slay could possibly step up as one of the better CBs this year too

Need Ebron to step up as the 3rd option behind Calvin and Tate

O-Line can't be any worst then last year

Go Bears... Surprised you remembered I was a Bears fan @JPZx , feel like it's been awhile since I've been anywhere but the Knicks thread on NT

This season gonna suck. Packers gonna be packers. Vikings should be much better. Bears still suck. Lions gonna have to fight long and hard this year if they wanna get in the wildcard

Aaron Rodgers plans to play eight more years

Posted by Mike Florio on August 10, 2015, 10:02 AM EDT

Former Packers quarterback Brett Favre began musing vaguely about retirement at age 32. Now 31, current Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t thinking about walking awash in the short term.

“Eight,” Rodgers told Peter King of TheMMQB.com regarding the intended remaining duration of his career.

Things of this nature are never binding, and the numbers tend to change — or to stay the same. Two years ago, Rodgers suggested that, with eight years in the bank (2005-12), he’d play eight more. Or maybe only seven.

Now, with 10 seasons down, he’s planning on eight more. And maybe he’ll continue to say “eight more years” for a few more years, like Tom Brady when he went more than a few years claiming he’d play 10 more years.

Rodgers mentioned in 2013 the factor of bringing more titles to Titletown. With only one Lombardi Trophy in seven seasons of starting for Lombardi’s old team, Rodgers may be more inclined to extend his stay, if that’s what it takes to get to two or three, or more.

One thing is clear, based on Rodgers’ ability to play well late last year despite limited mobility. He’ll be capable of making a late-career transition to arm-by-NASA-body-by-Lego pocket passer, if Rodgers decides to play beyond the point at which his legs decide to stop working as well as they do.

Packers' Clay Matthews testing out knee in practice today:

The plan is for LB Clay Matthews to test out his sore knee in practice today.

Matthews missed all of last week with knee soreness, saying numerous times that the injury was not serious and that he would be back soon.

According to coach Mike McCarthy, he will return for practice today at 12:15 and see how it goes.

"Clay Matthews is on a trial-and-error, trial return," McCarthy said. "We’ll see how his workout goes today."

Rookie CB Damarious Randall (groin) said the plan is for him to play Thursday against New England. But he won't be making the decision.

I think he's said 8 more like 3-4 years running now.
