Packers punter competition impacts Mason Crosby too

By ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- If Tim Masthay doesn't retain the Green Bay Packers' punting job, kicker Mason Crosby's life will change too.

Masthay has been Crosby's holder on field goals and extra points since 2010. So far in training camp, Crosby has made all 10 of his kicks with Masthay holding. However, with Masthay’s competitor for the punting job, Cody Mandell, as the holder, Crosby is just 4-of-8.

During the second field goal period of camp on Monday, Crosby had a 33-yarder blocked (by Datone Jones) and missed a 50-yarder wide left -- both with Mandell on the hold, although Crosby refused to blame either one on the hold.

"I think it's just the fact that Tim and I have worked together going on six years, and Cody and I just have limited reps," Crosby said. "We're working through some of that. Today, I thought was a better day all around. The longer one looked like it went right over the post. It was close."

Special teams coach Ron Zook adjusted the kicking pattern from the first day, when each holder handled two kicks in a row. On Monday, they alternated on every kick.

"For me, I kind of liked how it went today switching back and forth on every one," Crosby said. "I didn't look at who's holding. I just kind of have to look at the ball, where it's placed and just do my process. Can't really worry about all that stuff."

The Packers signed Mandell shortly after last season, when Masthay turned in the lowest net average (37.0 yards) of his career.

The punting competition is in its infancy. On Monday, Masthay had three punts. The first was a 45-yarder with 3.8 seconds of hang time followed by his worst punt of camp so far, a 30-yarder with just 3.0 seconds of hang time. He rebounded with a towering 43-yarder that hung for 5.0 seconds. Mandell's two punts were 47 yards (4.6 seconds) and 52 yards (4.2 seconds).

Notes on Randall, Rollins, Hundley, Perry, Sitton and Abbrederis:

First-round pick Damarious Randall picked off Aaron Rodgers in the end zone to give the defense the win in the first two-minute drill of camp. On first-and-goal from the 8-yard line with 28 seconds left, Rodgers was going for Davante Adams, but Randall made the diving interception. The offense won the second try with backup quarterback Scott Tolzien. He threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Myles White over cornerback LaDarius Gunter.

Second-round pick Quinten Rollins practiced for the first time. He missed the first three practices because of a hamstring that landed him on the non-football injury list to start camp. The cornerback was on a limited snap count.

After a slow start, fifth-round pick Brett Hundley had his best showing so far. Hundley made a pair of impressive throws in the red-zone period. He hit Jeff Janis for a 6-yard touchdown on a fade route, then threw a 3-yard touchdown to Ty Montgomery. "He just needs reps," McCarthy said of Hundley. "I think he definitely has improved from the OTAs to this point, and that's what you’re looking for."

Outside linebacker Nick Perry didn't show any ill effects from missing the entire offseason program because of shoulder surgery during the one-on-one drill. He came back to beat starting left tackle David Bakhtiari with a power move after Bakhtiari blocked him on their first rep.

Left guard Josh Sitton didn't take any of the one-on-one reps, but he returned to the team periods after skipping those the last two practices.

McCarthy said receiver Jared Abbrederis (concussion) has improved, but did not offer a timetable for his return. Others who missed practice were receiver Adrian Coxson (concussion), receiver Ricky Collins (heel), running back John Crockett (ankle), linebacker Clay Matthews (knee), guard Matt Rotheram (ankle) and outside linebacker Mike Neal (abdomen).

..."in spite of Jay Cutler's good year."

Bahahahahaha....you lost all credibility with that one.

Kevin White will not be ready for the regular season opener. His injury is worse than theyve claimed.

Go Cubs!

Still here....
Expectations are set low this year so I won't feel as disappointed if we crash and burn again

GO PACK GO, starting to listen to ESPN Milwaukee everyday to get back in the swing of things. Once season starts I'd recommend everyone listen to Tuesday's with Aaron by Jason Wilde.

I really want Abbrederis to make the team, I think if he can avoid injury he will be a good contributor for years to come. We have a plethora of WR's though and he already suffered a concussion |I But the fact they kept him after his ACL injury last year must mean something

John Fox “can’t predict” when Kevin White will practice

Posted by Josh Alper on August 3, 2015, 2:28 PM EDT

The Bears are five practices into training camp and they’ve yet to have their first-round pick on the field for any of them.

Wide receiver Kevin White landed on the physically unable to perform list to open up his first professional camp and there’s no timetable at this point for when his shin injury will be healed enough for him to begin working with the team. Coach John Fox said Monday that he’s looking at White’s absence as a “day-to-day” proposition, but after six weeks of dealing with the injury he “can’t predict” when White will be well enough to join his teammates.

“I think he’s making headway,” Fox said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “Like I said, he was on the shelf for six weeks. His conditioning level [and] soft tissue has built him back to have a chance to come back and play.”

Last year, Odell Beckham missed the entire preseason for the Giants while dealing with a hamsting injury and then missed four regular season games before having a rookie year for the ages. Repeating Beckham’s exploits is too much to ask, but the Bears hope for impactful contributions to their offense after a shorter absence from their rookie wideout.

Priefer enjoys his week as second-best special teams coach in Mankato

Mark Craig, Star Tribune

For a week or so, Mike Priefer doesn’t mind being the second best special teams coach in Mankato.

That’s because he’s got a soft spot for the top dog in that department: Chuck Priefer, former Packers, Chargers and Lions special teams coach, not to mention the 74-year-old father and best friend of Mike Priefer.

“I like to work him, make sure he is coming here and heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s not going to eat for free,” Mike joked Monday when asked about his father’s annual visit to Mankato. “Heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s going to make sure we are working him. He does a great job obviously; his experience is invaluable to me. He is my father; he was the best man in my wedding. We are very, very close.

“Just his experience and his knowledge, I tease him all the time that heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s forgotten more football than I know and a lot of times itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s true. He helps us with the specialist, we watch tape together and different ideas we swap back and forth. Heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s a great mentor for me.”

The two also talk by phone during the season.

“Weâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll chat every now and then,” Mike said. “He understands our schedule. I think the best time, when he was coaching in Detroit and it was my first coordinating job in Kansas City, we would talk for about an hour every Tuesday, just swapping ideas.

“He would have a chance to watch my tape, I would watch his tape and we would swap ideas and talk about different teams and personnel. Even now, heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll get a chance, heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s the biggest Vikings fan out there, and so he will watch out games and critique us a little bit and try to help me out.”

Chuck coached 30 seasons, including 17 in the NFL. Mike is gaining on him heading into his 22nd season overall, 14th in the NFL and fifth with the Vikings.

So, did they ever stand on opposite sidelines on game day?

“One time,” Mike said. “I was the assistant special teams coach of the New York Giants and he was the special teams coordinator for the Lions. It was in Giants Stadium and I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t want to tell you who won.”

It was in the early 2000s. Chuck’s Lions won.

“That game was really hard on my wife,” Chuck said.

The family met for dinner the night before at Chuck’s hotel.

“My mom wouldn’t tell us who she was going to root for until that night,” Mike said. “Finally, she said, ‘I’ve thought it over and I have to root for our paycheck. My own mother didn’t root for me.”

Mike was joking. Chuck laughed as his son put a hand on dad’s shoulder and joined in.

That's a Hope Solo profile-esque piece on a guy that once said in a special teams meeting that 'they should send all the f's [gay slur] to an island and nuke it.'
