no, Madeira is an autonomous region, but it's still part of the country and the people are still Portuguese. It's just that geographically it's more a part of Africa than Europe. More like how Alaska is part of the US but is geographically connected to Canada

Portugal has two sets of islands that aren't that geographically close to the mainland (Azores and Madeira) - but they proudly identify themselves as Portuguese, as much some Portuguese person from the mainland. They represent their Island/Region tho, they will let you know in an instant that they are Azorean or Madeirean, but we do that in mainland Portugal too. I represent the North alot

But na, this isn't a "Catalonia" or "Puerto Rican" type of situation or resistant. They are very proud Portuguese people.
