Since I'm here...let me touch on this...since I've seen this argument countless times on and offline..

Pogba was NOT a mistake. It was an informed decision from an experienced managerial team, which simply didn't go as expected.

Countless youth players have shown ridiculous amounts of talent, and played well in their respective teams in the short time they were given, and the majority of them go on to be average or mediocre players (in case you forgot, please see United example Ravel Morrison or if you like have a look at the Wunderkid who has graced the EPL named Bojan). Pogba feeling like he was ready, was great, but at the end of the day it's down to management, if he isn't willing to wait, they he should rightfully go. Unproven players should never be making demands to a manager (yes, he was unproven at the time, a few good games/ gametime doesn't suddenly make a player proven), Pogba is just simply lucky that things went his way....

Letting go of him was the right decision at the time...hindsight is always 20/20...
Ravel Morrison is prolly one of the most talented English kids. Talent has nothing to do with why Man U let him go and why clubs aren't signing him. Ravel has an attitude that makes Balo look humble and can't seem to leave his kid "thug" friends. Now with Pogba, ok say letting him go wasn't a mistake but letting him go for FREE was a huge mistake. It's funny how everyone on here who laughed at Chelsea selling KDB (even though he asked to be sold) but saying ManU made no mistake in letting Pogba walk to Juve for free

I can't speak on the KDB situation, cause honestly, I didn't care about his situation. I only ever laughed at Chelsea for letting Matic go only to go back and get him back a little later.

You speak of Ravel's attitude; but honestly Pogba's attitude at the time was also problematic. He believed in himself (rightfully so) but didn't want to wait, which to me constitutes an attitude problem. What's best for the team right now, may not necessarily be best for you right now, and that's what Pogba didn't understand. A little more patience would have served himself well. At the end of the day, does it really matter? Cause I always figured he'd end up at PSG/Real to be honest...

He did wait, when your club is short on midfielders, you happen to be a promising player in that position, but instead of letting you play, They ask play a defender over you (Rafa) and then they go and get a retired player to come back an play. Pogba saw his chances were extremely slim so he left for footballing reason. I think its an insult for to say Pogba had an attitude. Ravel was getting arrested and still hanging out with hooligans while all Pogba did was refuse to resign a contract cause he didn't see himself getting PT. What was problamtic was Fergie trying to make him look like he was after money when he refused to sign (which all players have the right to) But lets agree to disagree, btw you still in SA or was that another NTer lol

And to be honest, who said Pogba would have been THAT great for United?

Coman is balling right now, but he wasn't this great at PSG. Players have to venture out sometimes and find the right setting to flourish.

Pogba could have stayed around and never reached his full potential at United.

You think Ronnie would be CR7 if he stayed at Sporting?

 I'm still around. I pop into the thread every now and again to check what's popping. Between crazy amounts of work and summer time, I'm just not on NT as much anymore.

Things should start easing up work wise soon though...

Gotta disagree on Pogba tho. Fergie is on the small list of idols for me but I'm in the camp that he should have given him a shot. There is a reason to why Juve (another world class team) picked him up. At the time tho, I agree - Fergie was doing his managerial duty and making his own decisions (which led to United winning the EPL with a not so stellar squad) - so I guess he didn't make a "mistake" during the time, they won.

But it was a mistake going forward - Which Fergie probably knew he wouldn't be a part of (retirement), so maybe he didn't have the perspective needed to look 2-3 years ahead. He didn't need to. Pogba maybe could have been more patient but I will never blame a player for wanting to play, that makes up who they are - ambition.

its still a mistake regardless of the circumstances man U was in.

he's about to sell for at least 80 million for pete's sake and hes the best young midfileder in the world who plays both ways.

man u's best midfielder right now is ....

it doesn't even matter. they all pale in comparison to pogba

This is all after the fact though

Its easy to say that in hindsight. What would you say if he turned out to be a bust?

Yeah he's great now in reality. After playing in Italy. But who say's he would have been as great in England?

ADM was great in Spain. Ain't work out the same in England..

I think that is the way to get US soccer to a top tier level though.

Anyone who has played their way around youth soccer in the US understands the segmentation of it all. My Youth team were national champions. Playing at the highest level of youth soccer possible. And then...high school. I went to my local high school where our soccer coach's claim to fame was one time he made it to state cup semi finals one time. He really didn't know a lot about the game "kick it in the corner and we will chase it" (i kid you not). So 4 years of bad coaching and bad play. Our high school team was terrible. Kids who had played soccer for the first time in their lives trying out for the team.

needless to say if you can get consistent high level of coaching from the youth through an academy and keep playing levels high i think you can get more home grown talent. But it will take a dynamic shift in structure. Go to college and get an education sports is second....nope go to the academy try to make it pro....education will come. High school and college sports should be done away with in a sense.
Saying I 100% agree with this is an understatement

I don't watch college sports anymore and I could write a dissertation about my hatred for what college sports has become and certain college sports "fans". The amount of money being made of the college athletes backs, the racist undertones of the whole thing when I talk to certain people about college sports and their BS excuses and reasoning

.

I would love nothing more than college sports to be done away with but I know that won't happen. At the very least they could stop pretending they care about these peoples education and just separate the sports from the school altogether, for example You have the University of Miami (for education) and then you have the University of Miami Sports Academy completely separate from the school and education (and the NCAA). Thats the only potential solution I see.

^^ Those are all completely different scenarios though,he was brought up in the club system through the academy and was just there waiting for a shot while defender's and retired players were being trotted out at MF...

SAF wasn't thinking long term given that he was retiring soon

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Hindsight is always 20/20 true but I've always been an advocate for giving your young talent a chance when possible under Fergie and now under LVG. That's one of the proudest MU traditions

Just throwing this out there.. Pogba played more first team minutes for United than giggs and scholes when they were his age. I think it's obvious we wouldn't have had him long term, so realistically all we are missing out on was the right transfer fee. Which does sting

Given some of the names that were in the MF around that time, that's not saying that much imo...

Missed out on a nice little transfer fee at that

We all have our opinions on the matter, can't change anything. He's just always gonna be the one that got away for me

I honestly, don't think anyone at United cares about missing out on his transfer fee.

This is the club that is about to report over £500m in revenue.

Pogba didn't work out, Manchester United moved on, Pogba moved on, can we now do the same?

I love pogba.. But I'm not buying into the fact he was out there balling when he was at United. And I watched every game United played that year.. If memory serves me right my boy Ander was the stand out player that night

He wasn't but honestly, outside of Martial,I can't remember the last very young player to get off and running right out of the gate consistently...

It's usually a slow grind with young players as we can attest to with some of our supposed "starlets" *cough* Adnan *cough*

Like LVG loves to say,it's a process

Cop on the left doesn't look amused by the situation.

Got the base model of thee for $15 at Ross, been using them for over a year. I need a real pair of cleats sometime soon

Ah, now I remember having this convo with you before. That's a good point, valid point, and a good argument. Some players don't become World Class because they're on the wrong team - respect.

But I think I said this before, some players stay world class no matter where they're at. It's a small number and it def takes a special type of player, that's where I counter the argument by saying - I believe Pogba is one of those players. No matter where he would have played, his talent would have spoken for itself.

I don't know why you guys would want to do away with college sports. Makes no sense to me. The revenue is miniscule so the money argument really doesn't apply to college soccer.

I think most people agree that the college route shouldnt be the the primary developmental path for players in the 18-20 age range. Luckily with NASL and USL growing and stabilizing it soon won't be. That said, college soccer will always have its place and serve a purpose.

90% of Academy kids won't ever be good enough or have the desire to play at any level of professional soccer. That goes for the entire world, not just the U.S.

There's also a small group who won't be ready at 18, but will be ready at 22 (Dempsey, Stuart Holden, Geoff Cameron, Zardes). Those late bloomers would likely fall through the cracks without college soccer.

Then there's the fact that some college environments are pretty damn good at the latter stages of development. In the past 7-8 years, Grimes at UC Berkeley and Porter during his time at Akron have had more success developing 18-21 year old talent and have done a better job preparing kids for the pro game than FC Dallas or any other MLS Academy. And that's working with those players on a part time basis.

College soccer absolutely has a place in the U.S. development landscape. Doesn't mean there's not room for improvement or changes that will be made but it has its place.

As for that FC Dallas article, they kind of completely leave out the fact that even though Dallas has been admired for its vision and unrivaled success at the youth level for many years now, they had zero success transitioning elite youth talent to the pros up until Acosta just a season or two ago. Many, many "elite" youth prospects have fallen have off the face of the earth after graduating from the FC Dallas Academy.

As someone else mentioned, they're really not doing anything different than the other handful of MLS academies who've spearheaded the youth movement the past half decade. They just happen to operate in one of the largest metro areas in the world with little competition, and benefit from a number of cultural and geographical advantages. Like I said earlier many have critized Dallas over the years arguing that they're under achieving. For the longest time they've been missing the biggest part of the developmental puzzle; developing actual productive professionals. All while MLS clubs with far less in resources have done better putting homegrown pro talent on the field.
