ya I could see that

also, I have nothing to back this up with other than everyone seems to wear glasses, but I think eyesight is pretty poor in general in Asia so maybe the bigger screen helps with that?
Interestingly, non-Apple devices do reasonably well here... and those seem to be bigger than, say, an i6 so I guess most are comfortable with a bigger device.

It's hilarious to see someone talking on the phone with one of those though...

Didn't apple relatively recently come to China? I also remember from my China trip that people said iPhones were overpriced and expensive while their local brands catered to the market was great hardware.

It doesn't surprise me at all that people favor those phones over what we generally use.

The bigger screens definitely help with commute, I noticed mobile gaming, reading and movies were HUGE when I was traveling there.

I've heard of Huawei but never really paid any attention to them until they worked with Google on the 6p. Didn't realize that they were such a big company at the time

Officially, yes... but before that, people were still able to get their hands on Apple products via the grey-market (mostly HK).  Sooooooo many resellers here... I remember seeing an elderly couple line up for iPads in the morning and Nikes in the afternoon.

And not just Chinese brands... LG and Samsung do reasonably well too.

Anywho...

china has a ~20% tax on any product that is not a chinese brand (even if the stuff is manufactured in china).  Apple does not discount their items in china, so it is basically the same price as the states, + 20%.  Apple also had problems with the iPad 2 I think because some other company had "trademarked" iPad before they started selling them in china, and there was a whole big lawsuit which the chinese gov sided with the non-apple company.
