NT's All Time NBA ReDraft Thread: GR8 Write Up Page 187, Bracket Final Vote

the best shot is the one that's open.

not really. teams running drop back pick and roll d, and ice coverage means the mid range jumper is open every possession. Yes some how tom tibbadeau has been grinding teams to dust for 10 years.

average NBA player shoots 45% on open mid range jumpers, you only got hit 30% from 3 to beat that.

An individual player can base their offense on the mid range (Dirk, Kobe, Aldridge, etc.), but an entire team building their offense around the mid range would be idiotic and a death sentence.

bingo.

If you can break down the d with the the threat of your mid range shooting then fire away.

i love how the warriors are this barometer for the new nba. like they didn't go 6 games against a team that had literally 1 good player and 11 role players who were above average at best. or the fact the warriors had the greatest shooter of all time. or the fact they were the best defensive team in the league last year. but yeah, 3 pointers is all that matters.
it would have been funny if the cavs won seeing that lebron was carrying the team by volume shooting low% midrange shots and it worked for a while

Exactly.

But snobby analytic geeks who can't make a lay up playing basketball themselves don't wanna acknowledge any of that.

no one's arguing only take mid range shots, but this notion that shooting mid range shots are the worst shots to take is hokum. well balanced team that takes and makes open shots is the key to winning (along with good defense and limiting turnovers). if a guy is open from 15 feet and he can hit that shot consistently, it isn't a bad shot because it's only worth 2 points.

Sigh really, the nerd argument?

I love it's described as some inflexible attention grabbing argument. All people have said that unless you are super elite at it, the mid range jumper should be the last option.

I was shocked Manu was available this late. Made me feel a lot better about taking Barry over a big in round 2.

I don't see what all the commotion is about the 3 and shooting being at a premium in the current NBA. It's pretty obvious that shooting the 3 is only going to get more and more popular in the future.

Once Frazier was off the board when I was up, almost went Manu. Chose KJ instead. Manuuuu :pimp:. Except when he's playing my Rockets. Or your Lakers, of course.

This isn't rocket science, this is the general hierarchy of shots from best to worst

1. Dunks/layups
2. Free throws
3. Corner threes
4. Above the break threes
5. Midrange

No ones argued that tho. It's just dudes acting like having the ability to knock down the midrange IF NEEDED is a bad thing.

No one here has said a single time "MIDRANGE SHOTS ARE THE BEST"

All I said that sparked this **** is Yao can knock down a 14 footer if left open and he has to shoot it.

Then all kinds of obnoxious analytics analysis begun.

Having the ability to do something > not being able to.

That's also common sense, so I don't understand why all the hammering away started in the first place.

You're so defensive, man. I don't think anyone's even coming at your team like that. I think people are just speaking in general.

The only attention grabbing argument is devaluing someone's pick in a fantasy all time NBA draft on a forum because your number crunching on excel says that there are better shots in basketball than a mid range shot.

The more attention grabbing argument is continuing to hammer away with the same point when NO ONE DISAGREED WITH THAT POINT TO BEGIN WITH.

Monty Williams was running pin downs to free up Jason Smith for mid range jumpers, Jason smith is an good mid range jump shooter, at around 45%. You really think that's a good idea?

You really think you should be running plays that's primary purpose is to generate an open mid range jumper for a 45% shooter?

I didn't even say it was a bad pick.

I feel like people all in here disagreeing.

*shrugs*

I wish we would have a basketball summit too.

I would love for you to try to show me how analytically great you are on the court. Let's see how many 3 point shots you get up on me.
