It just randomly started like a month ago, I get a call from someone (who is clearly in or from India) who claims I owe a debt from 2011 where I took out a Payday loan for $500 and with interest I owe now $700 but they'll let me settle it over the phone right then for $680. Nice of them, except I never took out such a loan.

They did have my name, phone number, address, and place I worked for around that time period so it was pretty convincing at first. They threatened to sue me, said I'd be recieving a summons to court

I asked them for more information, basic information they would have if they were legit like when exactly did I take out this loan (she answered sometime around February), from where (well we're a large, multinational corporation with many payday lenders under us so it could have been any of a number of them), how like was it check or direct deposit because my bank account shows no record, which she finally got mad and said could be either one but it isn't her responsibility to let the consumer know this information and I just need to pay right away or go to court or jail.

At this point, obviously it's shenanigans, and I got mad with her tone and talking to me crazy so I started cussing and she hung up after yelling, "See you in court!!"

Get another call back the next day, by the way it's a different number every time and sometimes even a local number to your area code, I start off more cordial and agreeable, just ask for the alleged particulars which they claim they emailed and snail mailed to my house th einfo already and back to the we have no choice but to take you to court.

They won't tell you where they are, a company name or address, anything about the alleged debt. They just continue to say they are collecting on a debt, an arbitration company, and that I better pay or go to court.

They started back this week, this time a Jamaican sounding chic who went every bit with me on the cussing and talking **** and was the first to at least give me a company name, UPG.

Is there anything I can do besides just disregard?

TLDR: Anyone heard of this company UPG? Seems like they call people claiming to be collecting a fake debt and use words like court and summons to scare them into paying a debt they don't even owe.

I have that happen to me, more than likely it wouldn't go to court due to the small amount of the debt. It's possible the loan was done on the internet if it's a valid debt where the only thing needed is a valid work number and a bank acct and your social. I'd look into doing a soft credit pull which is free and look to see if it's on there.

It's not on there. There is 100% no way I took out a Payday loan for $500 ever, maybe someone else did with all my info but every still, almost 5 yrs ago, that **** would have been hit my credit or I'd have gotten calls or something They just up and pop out of nowhere. Yea right.

They probably using VOIP too which would explain why their # changes to whatever they want it to be and if you call back, a random person answers and asks what you want.

They go by UCG too. Apparently it's a mega operation, they are in Hamburg, NY and overseas.

So yea I'm not worried about them, it's kind of fun them getting nasty with me on the phone so I can curse them back out too though. Don't get that side of me very often.

I might have a harassment claim or something, not trying to sue for $, just wish they'd leave me alone. I can block the # every time but they just call from a different number. Last guy who called a minute ago was kind of cool. I told him, "look dude, you and I both know I don't owe anyone any money and I'm too smart to fall for this, you're wasting your time here, you'll get nothing from me and I know you won't take me to court so save that, " he was like, "ok you right," and hung up

my boy use to run an agency like this...

its not a scam but the agency bought ur pay day loan debt from a big conglomerate along with other people.

u dont have to pay it at all.

you'd be suprised how many people actually do tho.

I think there are two different scenarios and what you're describing isn't what OP is experiencing. But being honest, that's a scam too considering the amount they buy the debt for and how much they try to hit you in the head with.

Cats w/ student loans and the elderly are the biggest targets of these companies. Student loan debt changes hands often and it's hard to keep track, they never contact u until they've hit your credit multiple times.

The ones that target older people are the true definition of scumbags tho, them and televangelists

Had this happen to me. Took out payday loans a few years ago from online and never paid them, ended up closing my account...I start getting calls from some lady saying she was the "county clerk" (calling from a totally different area code) and how I was facing felony charges unless I paid right then. I was driving when she called and **** had me shook for a second ...I told her I'd call back with an arrangement because I wasn't working at the time. Soon as I got off the phone, my ***** spidey sense started tingling. This the same woman who called my phone saying her name was something else a while back trying to collect. I knew it cause I still had the voicemails..next time she called me I told her to suck the skin off my **** and come get me...**** was like 3 years ago and I still haven't been arrested, summoned to court, or had it even show up on my credit report.
