Get this book OP. Make sure it's the updated, 1982 version and not the one from the 30s.

Valuable lessons in here and I'm just over half way through. Gotta learn how to handle people and communicate with others and even make "friends" when it comes to business and just life in general. Being a good talker will get you further than any one skill.

Owner of my company makes millions and there's plenty of people who know more about engineering than he does, but because he can navigate the corporate world and people in general, he's running things.

My company made us do an 8 hour public speaking seminar by Dale Carnegie. Was actually very very useful

My gf interviews people. Some of things she tells me people say. :smh:

She told me one dude just randomly started explaining what his tattoos mean in an interview. There are A LOT of dumb people in the world.

The weakness question comedy though. Wow.

Man, I was 19 at the time and there would be times id put my pen and pencil down, look them in the eye, shake my head no to them, and asked them the same question again  dudes were in their high 20's and 30's

One girl told me she had to have her office area at a specific location so that she would be far away from her ex boyfriend :x

You can't make this stuff up

Office politics are hilarious. Love playing the game and I have no trouble code-switching between environmental or personnel contexts.

He's a great writer. I've been practicing some of the stuff in the book and I'm seeing some relationships in my life change. My conversations with people are better. Just from a small sample, but over time the development of these skills will get you so far. Makes your whole life more enjoyable.

Re read my OP, Im talking about being an introvert in social services

I dont do any becky fake voice stuff, Im always professional.
Im just not that sociable

My point was mainly about three things

1. Having to interact with people during my break when id rather be alone
2. And having to walk around with a smile on my face 24/7
3. Making small talk when there is really nothing to talk about

I dont get into anything with anyone, I just dont speak that much when I dont know people very well.
People literally forget Im there

If you think your coworkers forget you work there, think your bosses remember you? It's hard to get promoted if no one knows who you are.

How are you going to get to know people when you choose not to get to know them? You have two great ice breakers (name, occupation) and are failing to use them.

Nothing wrong with being an introvert if you embrace the fact that it is and will limit your opportunities.

#2 isn't that important but #1 and #2 are.

People think being an introvert means being closed off, not true. Spend some time with high level execs and you'll realize there are quite a few that are introverted, shining whenever they need to. Either you figure the game out and play to win, or sit there all curmudgeonly and complain.

"I've been here 10 years, no raise"
"damn... who are you again?"

I'm an introvert

I hate talking, I hate people, I honestly dislike being in a group of more than about 3 but I have good people skills so when people do talk to me I've always been able to hold a conversation. People at most of my jobs work think I'm this social, outgoing guy which couldn't be further than the truth

Thank you, Im well aware of this.

Thats why I made the thread.

I am working on it, My OP explains that I know its necessity in my field.

The old me would have never gone to lunch with them, Im compromising.

as long as youre not rude there is nothing wrong with being reserved

That is just not the cases in some jobs/careers
Heck Ive seen rude women not get fired or get promoted over someone who doesnt speak that much.
At the end of the day its all about making your presence known at least when it comes to promotions and choosing who has to be let go.

It's actually the reverse. Stepping out of your shell to dare to be something greater. But hey, do you.

i disagree

basically sucking up to the slave master for better slave perks

just focused on creating my own lane

and yes you still build with people in that aspect too but I don't fake interactions with people whatsoever

Sometimes you gotta play the game before you have the opportunity to create your own lane.

I don't want to have bosses forever but that's the only option for me at this point

Agreed. Folks these days are all about being "independent" and "DGAF."

If so, why not just start your own gig straight out of the gate and have no bosses? If someone's signing your checks, don't bite their hand.
