I hate playing the work game. I'd like to tell folks that IDGAF about what they're saying most of the time, but I play the game anyways. With co-workers who I'm cool with its whatever...we can talk and engage effortlessly.

But with the outliers who I'm forced to congregate with at times, I put up minimal effort at feigning interest in what they're saying. I've found that as long as you're courteous and professional with the few words you say to someone you have no interest in talking to, that's good enough. Not everyone is gonna be buddy-buddy, but we can all get along when need be.

Well put.

Being in HR, I'm forced to listen to and get along with people I can't stand.

And as for the ones I do get along with, I draw a line with how close we get anyway. Stopped exchanging numbers with people at work not too long ago. Unless it's a connection that I see as being beneficial sometime in the future.

I generally engage in small talk with my co-workers and get along with them just fine.

But there are 2 rules I'll never break:

1.) Talk about anything personal (e.g. relationships, my personal views)

2.) Talk about the moves I'm making / goals I have

It's annoying cause everyone is fake.
people aren't being fake. people are just being extra courteous and respectful for the sake of the workplace.  shhh runs smoother that way.

some of yall are so damn self centered.

I fake it until I get the job and then I hardly ever smile because I'm not at a comedy club or the dentist. Why do they need to see my teeth?

Eh, I just work hard enough that I'll look to busy to talk to

Keep the convos minimal

I wear a dust mask most times so if people talk to me I just head nod and such

The Japanese say you have three faces.
The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends, and your family.
The third face, you never show anyone. It is the truest reflection of who you are.

Cliché quote but true for me

Maybe. But honestly I'm thinking of it completely different. Its showing me what I already knew going into the future. The only way for me in this world is to start my own thing. Trust me you can play the game the "right" way they still will drop you. Over something petty...

I currently work retail. You get the real Adobecs4. I ain't faking the funk for anybody there  my nose is already brown, b.

I'm currently in my first corporate setting, and it is kind of draining. I'm in management so I can do my own thing, but in major meetings the politics come out and I have no appetite for it.

One of the hardest things for me in my first "real" job was dealing with the age gap. Here I was in my 20s, steady browsing NT, still buying sneakers and hoodies for my after work life and listening to hip-hop really quietly at my desk. And I'm steadily dealing with conservative, southern folks in their 40s and 50s. We had literally nothing in common outside of our jobs. **** was painful trying to chat about what we did over the weekend or anything other than work. I don't miss having to do that dance every Monday.

You described my situation to a T
Minus the buying sneakers and hoodies.
But today they ask me what'd you do this weekend? I could only reply with I went to an art gallery. Man I was at that gallery for a whole 3 minutes. But I sure as hell was not gonna mention the debauchery that I partook in.

I think it's funny how some of you Guys think you're good at faking it, op probably has a rep for bein a weirdo and won't ever shake it, yall not foolin nobody but yourself

I am an introvert
I like being alone
I like eating alone
I dont like small talk

I realized a while back that my personality wont fit in the career I want(social services).
I have lost out on opportunities in past jobs because I wasnt "out going" or bubbly

So I decided to create a Job personality.

Today I ate lunch with a group of staff and I did not want to go, but I went.
I smiled and bought and ate that sucky 9 dollar grilled cheese sandwich
I force my self to smile( and show teeth) and laugh at unfunny jokes
I would just usually chill in my car but I played the part.

Anybody else do this...

I'm a carbon copy of OP. I am quiet and look forward to clocking out every morning.

watch yo mouth

I just started this "personality" last week so we will see.
Honestly the goal isnt to make everyone love me the goal is to not hear
"You arent a talker are you"
"you should smile more you have such pretty teeth"
blah blah blah

Unless they see me around friends and family I dont see how they will think this isnt my true self

I'm tellin u, it's always obvious af, it's just not u

As you get older OP you realize that you don't actually need to do that. It's an internalized fear/failure/fight/flight mentality that we don't want to expose ourselves and leave us vulnerable.

When in reality, the sheep advice of this is actually wrong. As odd as it sounds to say just be yourself, but always speak in a calm and controlled manner. Being excited at work makes people stand out as childish. Having interests and being a real person, with flaws makes you personable and easy going (both internally and to others). And you won't get fired for it.

Example - went out to eat with coworkers. Everyone did the usual dance of what to eat, im good with anything dance. Me, I love pizza. I truly and honestly love it. The first two weeks I just played along too and did that dance. Finally, one Friday when five of us were standing around doing that dance I was myself. I said i gotta go get pizza, can't handle anymore of this upscale food. Need to get something a little greasy. Don't worry about me you guys go enjoy. Turned out two of the others felt the exact same way and really wanted to join me. Two others wanted aomething healthy. We split up and the ice was broken and everyone felt much more comfortable the rest of the time on this job (was a 5 week contract job at some company).

That could be true but not every one is going to be that outgoing guy who feels the need to comment on everything. Which can be pretty annoying also. Guess you gotta pick your poison. It's like HS all over again, many diff types of personalities.

I hate the co worker who eats non-stop all day, always talking about food, trying whatever fad diet is in style, and can't figure out why they are fat. Look at your trash can it's filled with nothing but snacks :smh:
