Django and After Earth wasn't an either/or thing. He was going to do After Earth regardless.

He didn't do Django cuz he felt Django wasn't written to be the star of the movie. He felt for like a movie like this it wasn't right that the white guy (waltz character) is the hero of the story. He had disagreements with QT and passed.
