NT Fathers Unite: Tips and Cheat Codes for 1st-Time Dads

We tried a few different breast pumps. The one from the hospital was pretty good. The one that insurance covered was wack. But the one we ended up using the most and loved was the Spectra S2 pump. Wifey said it was the best out of all she tried, including the one at the hospital. She said the Spectra mimicked the baby's sucking.

Spectra, gona check that out preciate it.

How much on avergae did yall spend on the hospital fees for the delivery?

Idk what to expect, this is out first kid, i red online that the hospital my girl chose is around $2500 delivery

My girlfriend is dirt poor so she gets a lot of things free. Also, look into your city or hospital's social programs, they're not income based at all, just like 1st time parent classes, etc. Just for attending they give you like a free carseat, or take the breastfeeding class and they buy you the equipment.

The upcoming sleep deprivation scares me. I already have to get up and walk around every 30 minutes so I don't fall asleep at my desk

Yeah you don't want a manual pump, unless you want to go green and save the environment. Just get also the breast pump bra.

Whaaaaatttttt insurance covers breast pumps?
It depends who your medical insurance is covered under. Some insurance companies loan a breast pump, some pay half or a partial fee. Give your medial insurance a call, they'll be able to answer.

2nd night (or really, the 24 hr period) i got two hours sleep including the one hour nap. So bedtime was1 hour

Everyone talks about thr first night which is rough but man the 2nd was the devil

We do breastfeeding without a pump yet. Have a medela as well.

My insurance covered everything, and the hospital charged us $10k+ , what's clutch was AFLAC pretty much paid my wife to have a baby so that helped pay bills around the house.

This may sound odd, but learn how to make the baby burrito. It makes putting them to sleep so much easier. It's an art form but once you have it down it is worth it.

Steal the hospital swaddlers. They work a lot better than the ones you buy in the store.

Exactly. And if you are bottle feeding get as many of those sample size bottles from the hospital as you can. They get them for free to use.

I really liked the swaddlers with the Velcro you can get from target, makes the job a lot easier.

Man i refuse to beleive that babys piss and poop more then 5 times a day. I guess i will find out.

What breast pump have yall used? My girl will be breastfeeding but we need the pump also. Any reccomondations?
For a little while, it was about 10-14 diapers per day.

not sure what breast pump my wife used. Spectra sounds right, but it was an automatic and she got a pump bra to go with it so she didn't have to hold them for the 20 minutes while pumping. That way she was able to get some work done while pumping.
My wife is due late October. Baby shower next weekend.

We hit the Target sales two weeks ago for diapers and got the gift card. Got a living social offer for a Sam's Membership. Thought it would be useful to buy diapers in bulk that way (Enfamil too although she will be breast feeding).

Hit up yard sales for furniture. We bought a brand new rocker for $250 at Rooms to Go. The following week we saw a neighbor selling one, VNDS for $40. Talked him down to $35. Also had a neighbor giving away chest of drawers (cheap Wal-Mart kind but it was free).

I'm just worried about the lack of sleep.
Amazon Prime is AMAZING for diaper and baby supply delivery. Just plan ahead for what you'll need every month and it just shows up on your door without having to lug it around. Puts Target and warehouse stores to shame. Not to mention Prime TV came in handy for late night TV while rocking or feeding the baby.

Garage sales are amazing too! Most of the stuff people buy is used less than a handful of times.

Lack of sleep definitely sucks. First 3 months are by far the worst since the baby needs to be woken up every 3 hours to feed. After that, my wife & I took shifts. I took from 8-midnight and she took midnight to morning if the baby woke up. Great system because one of the worst parts is not knowing exactly when the baby will need something so at least you know when you're "off duty".

Aight, so diapers and bottles are provided at the hospital and i just fill up my duffle bag wit the stuff right? Anything else they provide? Lil man is slidin out the womb in november.

My sis actually works in a hospital :pimp:

Good. My girls mom works in the mother baby as a nurse. My ex works as a nurse in the delivery room also. Lol.

My girl is a nurse for kaiser also. But yeah just make sure you get as many as you can.

If you already bought swaddlers, beware they will shrink. Just use them as a changing pad when you are out and you have to use a changing station. Official changing pads are too small.

They only provide newborn diapers and in rare cases size 1. Honestly you'll go through 6 in a day. You don't want them to sit in a dirty diaper cause it's bad on the cheeks. They do give you milk but kaiser is about breast feeding.

Im Filipino so I get hooked up at hospitals. (Stereotype that all Filipinos are nurses.) diapers/formula/swaddlers/blankets/etc. just get all that you can.

Diapers.

Buy them as needed,(unless they have a buy 2 get a gift card special) no need to stock up. It's just a reoccurring thing. No sense in storing size 3 diapers when he ain't gonna use it for a year. (It's just a way to get out the house and head to target lol)

6 Diapers? I hope you were feeding that kid. We would go through 6 by lunch.

I am the Swaddle Master. Swaddle game on lock!

And yea, from newborn to about 2 months it was AT LEAST 10 diaper changes a day. AT LEAST.

my boy despised the swaddle. hates anything that restrains him til this day and he's getting close to 3 years old.

I don't know I honestly don't remember and I just tossed out a number. But yeah we power fed our son.
Got it.

For all the DS Dads out there, the Total Baby iOS app was crucial for tracking daily events for the first 6 months. It's $5, but SO worth it. Since the Doctor wants to know almost every aspect of the baby's life and you're getting no sleep, you'll be surprised when you have or haven't last done something and what trends start showing up despite the chaos you're going through.

A security camera in the nursery was great too. Walked in the room one night to fix the camera and found a heavy blanket fell on him. Would have stayed that way all night if I hadn't found it. Not to mention knowing exactly what's going on in the room. Don't even bother with a "baby monitor". Just get a stock security camera, throw a password on there, and you can access from your home network and use your phone/tablet/computer.
