Since the 53 man roster is set, figured I'd get a head start on this. I'm sure the practice squad roster will be set not too long, but I know waiver wire guys may also be headed this way, so this roster may still not be 100% set.

Houston (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans made their cuts before the deadline of Saturday at 3pm CT. While the focus tends to be on the playersreleased, here we wanted to focus on the guys still on the team.

Here is the entire Houston Texans 53-Man roster for the start of the regular season.

HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans placed quarterback Tom Savage on injured reserve after Savage suffered a shoulder sprain against the Dallas Cowboys in the Texans' fourth preseason game.

The injury will not need surgery, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said.

Savage suffered the injury when he was sacked in the fourth quarter in Arlington, Texas. Until then Savage completed 62.1 percent of his passes for 135 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The second-year quarterback was set to be the Texans' third quarterback behind starter Brian Hoyer and backup Ryan Mallett.

With Savage on the roster, the Texans had planned to keep three quarterbacks. Without him, they might opt for adding a quarterback to their practice squad for scout team purposes. Many teams carry only two quarterbacks on their active roster -- the Texans have in the past.

The Texans drafted Savage in the fourth round in 2014 and kept him on the roster in a developmental capacity. That's not the kind of player one can keep on the practice squad. Consequently, this injury opened up a roster spot for the Texans to use on another position. It might be why there are currently six receivers on the 53-man roster.
 
Well no chance of signing Charles James and the Ravens claim him for their practice squad.

With J.J. Watt leading the way and Jadeveon Clowney healthy, the Houston Texans would appear to have the defense to carry them back to the playoffs.

The offense could hold them back and faces plenty of questions ahead of Sunday's opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, namely star running back Arian Foster's health.

Watt was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons after racking up 20 1/2 sacks, and the attention paid to him could clear the way for Clowney to compile his own gaudy numbers after an injury-shortened rookie season.

The 2014 No. 1 overall draft pick had seven tackles and no sacks in four games before undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee.
"I'm just counting down, just ready to get out there and play," Clowney said. "I'm looking forward to being out there again. It's been a long time. I'm excited."

The Texans brought over the sizable Vince Wilfork from New England to clog up the middle of the line and tried to shore up a pass defense that ranked 21st by taking cornerback Kevin Johnson with the 16th overall pick. Houston still ranked seventh with an average of 19.2 points allowed in 2014 despite a weaker secondary.

The rushing attack was even better, finishing fifth at 135.1 yards per game. Foster ranked sixth with 1,246 yards despite missing three games, but when he'll begin playing this season is unclear because of groin surgery.

"I think he'll be back sooner rather than later," coach Bill O'Brien said.

Alfred Blue is likely to fill in after rushing for 528 yards as a rookie, including 280 in three starts when Foster was out, but the Texans could have a more difficult time making up for Andre Johnson's departure.

Johnson left for Indianapolis after compiling 13,597 yards and 64 touchdowns on 1,012 receptions in 12 seasons. DeAndre Hopkins had a team-best 1,210 yards on 76 catches in his second season but won't have a player of Johnson's stature to divide a defense's attention.

"I've still got the mindset I had since I was a rookie, and that's to come out here and dominate," Hopkins said.

Brian Hoyer is slated to throw to Hopkins after winning a training camp duel with Ryan Mallett. Hoyer made 13 of his 17 career starts for Cleveland in 2014, posting a 76.5 passer rating that ranked third-worst among qualifying QBs.

The Chiefs and Texans have split six all-time meetings, with Kansas City winning 17-16 in the most recent in 2013.
 
Watt, Wilfork, and Clowney could be something very special this season. The amount of pressure they generate should be a lot of fun to watch.

Not overly optimistic about the offensive side of the ball, but we'll see how it goes. I think they want to nickel and dime down the field the way the patriots do. The pats were picking up 6 yards a pop on basic hitch routes.
 
I definitely am hype for the defense. I just to want the offense to be so bad that the defense has to be a minimum as good as last year to even stay in the games. Also, I really hope Hoyer is protected enough for him to actually use this WR core, cause I do think they can be very good with Hopkins leading, and Shorts balling in the slot.

Pretty much a total abomination from the offense. I 'd like to slander the defense, but the offense mostly put them in terrible positions, having them continuously on the field. JJoe did get beat on a big play, and there was some lazy tackling on running plays, but I feel like that correlated with them having to be right back on the field after stalling offense. Outside of maybe two drives, Hoyer looked really bad. Based on that, seems like Hoyer is a practice warrior, but Mallett may be the gamer. Sure, you can say the Chiefs may have laxed on defense, but he was still making the throws and being very active. Even with a game on the road against CAR, i think we have to roll with him.

Also, thought Clowney played well, no game-breaking stuff, but just seeing him out on the field for a very lengthy time was good. Think him, Watt, and Wilfork could do work if they're not on the field for 45 minutes.
 
TE Ryan Griffin to miss "significant time"

The Texans will be without Ryan Griffin for the short-term, according to head coach Bill O’Brien. The third-year tight end left near the end of Sunday’s game against Kansas City with an injury.

“As it relates to the injuries yesterday, Ryan Griffin probably has the most significant injury,” O’Brien said Monday. “He’ll miss some time with that so he’ll probably be out with some significant time.”

Griffin had one catch for 18 yards in Houston’s 27-20 loss to the Chiefs.

The Texans currently have just two other tight ends on the active roster, Garrett Graham and C.J. Fiedorwicz, with Anthony Denham and Mike McFarland on injured reserve. Last week, the Texans added rookie Eric Tomlinson (6-6, 263) from UTEP to the practice squad.

The team could add another body to the position group with just two healthy tight ends heading into Week 2.

“We’re talking about that right now but we haven’t come to a decision on that,” O’Brien said.

The (0-1) Texans travel to Carolina to face the (1-0) Panthers on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 noon CT on CBS KHOU-11 and SportsRadio 610.
 
if you follow pat d stat on twitter, he highlighted a lot of plays on both sides of the ball. pretty good to see. hoyer wasn't terrible, but the turnovers killed us. he made a lot of good throws, but struggled with pressure and blitzes.

mallett looked good too, but i wonder how much of it is garbage time stats vs soft coverage. his second drive he was pretty inaccurate.
 
HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans traded receiver Keshawn Martin to the New England Patriots, sources confirmed.

He'd been on the Texans roster since being drafted in the fourth round in 2012, fighting for a spot on it in the past two offseasons. His versatility is what kept him around, as he could play inside, outside and serve as a returner.

In his Texans career Martin caught 38 passes for 416 yards and three touchdowns, with all three scores coming in his first two years with the team. Martin was often used as the Texans’ slot receiver while playing for former Texans coach Gary Kubiak.

When the Texans fired Kubiak and hired Bill O’Brien, completely turning over their offensive staff in the process, Martin fell out of favor. He only had six receptions in 2014 and didn’t have a touchdown. Even though he handled kickoff and punt returns for the first two seasons, his role was reduced to just punt returns last season with the Texans seeming to perpetually be seeking someone to unseat him there. Martin averaged 25.1 yards per kickoff return and 8.9 yards per punt return.

This offseason, the Texans added four receivers -- veterans Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts III in free agency and rookie Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery in the draft. The Texans kept those four, starter DeAndre Hopkins and Martin on their opening day roster. All of them were active on Sunday, but Martin and Strong didn’t play.

Texans also bumped Chandler Worthy to the active roster.
 
NFL notebook: Ryan Mallett named Texans’ starting QB

Ryan Mallett is Houston’s quarterback again and is ready to take advantage of his second chance.

Coach Bill O’Brien said Thursday that Mallett will start for the Texans on Sunday at Carolina.

O’Brien had said earlier in the week that he wouldn’t announce a decision until game time. But after the news got out on Wednesday, O'Brien decided to make it official on Thursday.

‘‘You feel bad when it’s one week,’’ Mallett said. ‘‘But also you’re excited to finally get out there and show what you’ve been working toward.’’

Brian Hoyer beat Mallett for the job in camp. But Hoyer was benched in the fourth quarter of Houston’s opening loss to the Chiefs after committing two turnovers. Mallett led Houston on two scoring drives in the final six minutes of 27-20 loss.

‘‘When Ryan entered the game he added a spark to our team,’’ O’Brien said. ‘‘I felt like he moved the ball downfield. He was decisive, had some energy, showed good leadership.’’

Mallett, who prides himself on being a hard worker, thinks he ratcheted up his effort to another level after he lost the job in camp.

‘‘I think I just started working even harder after that,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s my dream to play in this league every week, every down, and I’m going to keep chasing it. I'm going to do what I have to do to achieve that.’’

The decision wasn’t an easy one for O'Brien and he said the move was not ‘‘an indictment on Brian Hoyer.’’

According to Mark Berman, Derek Newton is starting at left guard and Jeff Adams at right tackle. We could be without Duane Brown for "multiple weeks". Jesus Christ.

I've never heard of Oday Aboushi in my life, and I look at these rosters a lot :lol:. Apparently we claimed him 3 days ago. Former OL of the jets in 2014.

Jeff Adams leg just buckled and wheeled off on a cart :x :smh: this O-line was in shambles before, and now it's even worse
 
Another winnable game, lost due to offensive ineptitude and convenient defensive gaffs. JJoe looked brutal the entire game. So much for resting him during pre-season. The O-line was even a problem during preseason, and with these injuries, it only gets worse. The defense was able to make stands quite a bit, though at the wrong time, guys would miss tackles and commit penalties. Simon in particular missed tackles. There's one play where he read the play perfectly, yet missed tackling Cam, and caused another Texans LB to run into him.

Mallett was comfortable in the shotgun, and when protected, actually looked good. Just sucks that he wasn't able to get consistent protection. he had some errant throws, but for the majority of the game, our WRs were just dropping the ball. The running game is abysmal btw, which hurts the passing game even more. People don't even respect the run right now. Feel like they should just rotate Grimes and Polk and keep it at that.

Have Jameis at home next week. Our defense needs to play up so much, cause there's no telling what this offense is gonna do. Can't ave Jameis light us up at home.
