++Houston Texans Thread Offseason 2016++ Pre-Season @ Dallas

Just Kubiak's offense became outdated here and predictable, Smith's drafting has also become outdated.

0-2 can be come back from, but with this OL play and the D breaking to allow a big play or 2 at the wrong time, this could easily be 0-5 with games against the Colts and @ the Falcons coming up. I can't deal with that.

being down to 3rd string offensive lineman killed us. couldn't run the ball at all. BOB has to mix it up so the run isn't so predictable. we should just be running no huddle out of the shotgun all game with mallett tbh. he seems most comfortable in the gun. 0-2 is frustrating, but we've also played 2 good defenses being short on the offensive side of the ball. jets beat indy tonight and we're 1 game behind jacksonville and tennessee. seriously, does that worry anyone?

being behind the titans or jags shouldn't worry anyone

but be realistic, this team isn't good enough to make a run in the playoffs

Rick Smith has his faults no doubt but BOB has had final sign off on a lot of these guys too.

This is only BOB's 2nd draft under Smith

The Houston Texans offensive line is set to have it is third different starting combination in as many weeks.

The Houston Texans are set to start their third different offensive line in as many weeks on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dealing with injuries to Duane Brown (thumb), Xavier Su'a-Filo, and Jeff Adams who was lost for the season with a knee injury, the offensive line is scrambling for answers.

“I think the offensive line has played a little bit inconsistent, but at times they’ve looked really good,” O’Brien said of the group's start to the season.

The Texans will either depend on Su’a-Filo, Oday Aboushi, or Kendall Lamm to fill the void on the offensive line for the upcoming week.

“I think we can get him up to speed,” explained O’Brien on Aboushi. “I think he’s a smart guy. He’s been in a similar offense before in New York, similar terminology with the line communication, things like that. I think he’s a guy that we can definitely get in there and can possibly help us this week.”
O’Brien call Su’a-Filo day-to-day with his calf injury, where it has been previously stated he was declared out early in the week and, according to O’Brien, Lamm hung in there on Sunday in his first NFL game.

Injured starting left tackle Duane Brown gave his assessment on what the offensive line has to do better.

“I think it’s just a mindset we have to have upfront,” saidd Brown “It’s being more physical than the other team and just sustaining our blocks. We weren’t able to do that this week, so we have to have a better outing next week.”

The Texans have to find some continuity on the offensive line and it has to get squared away sooner than later.

This is just BOB's 2nd draft under Smith.

Hopkins apparently has a concussion, and was held out of practice today. He's going through that whole protocol thing right now. Just wonderful.

And the first one looks like a total bust minus Clowney and the 2nd one isn't off to a rousing start outside of Johnson.

So pretty much par the course.

Possibly true, but it's still his 2nd draft, and still one Smith is apart of, even if he's not making the final decision of the picks.

Due to the ongoing ailments of Duane Brown and Xavier Su'a-Filo, the Texans were forced to start a hodgepodge offensive line against the Panthers last week. Things then went from bad to worse when Jeff Adams sustained a season-ending injury in the midst of the Carolina game, further weakening an already flagging unit.

Not surprisingly, the Texans are scrambling for reinforcements on the offensive line, and that desperation was evident today as the team made a handful of moves. Aaron Wilson reports:

The Texans signed tackle Edawn Coughman to the practice squad and worked out tackle Jesse Davis, according to a league source.

Meanwhile, the Texans cut quarterback Zac Dysert and offensive tackle Joseph Treadwell from the practice squad.

We can debate the shortcomings of Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer, and a running attack that's missing Arian Foster until the cows come home, but a decimated offensive line will only continue to hamstring an offense that's searching for any sort of consistency or spark.

The Houston Texans have added another running back to the team, per multiple reports.

Daryl Richardson, an Abilene Christian product, appeared in 24 games with the Rams during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He collected 690 rushing yards on 167 carries.

Richardson was with the Jets this preseason, appearing in three games. In the final game against the Eagles, he carried the ball 22 times for 72 yards and a score. In the end, he was cut and not placed on the Jets' practice squad.

The Texans are in need of help at running back, as Houston has rushed for only 159 yards through two games with Alfred Blue, Chris Polk, and Jonathan Grimes splitting carries, good for a meager 3.6 yards per carry. Richardson can give the Texans another option on till Arian Foster returns. Although Foster returned to practice last week, he is still lsted as day-to-day as he recovers from groin surgery.

Forgot Swearinger plays for the Bucs. I'm curious to which Swearinger shows up, the hard hitting playmaker, or the reckless one causing penalties and giving up big plays. I'm not sure what he's been doing so far in the season to really get a feel for him.

Also, I've heard some stuff about Watt getting "pancaked" during the Panthers game, then they showed the play, and it's Watt bull-rushing one of the lineman like he's a kid, but slips as he's trying to get around him, with the lineman rolling on top of him. People sure will try to create a story that isn't there

Better offensive play, but once again, offensive problems put the defense back on the field, and they end up giving up a huge play & TD. I'm gonna be pissed if that's what costs them the game. Sure, it's only 2 points, but the offense needs to be putting up 7s.

Bullock missing that kick smh smh

Good to get a win, even if it was ugly. The defense played vary well, outside of (of course) 1 or 2 big plays, especially that Sims screen for a TD :smh: that was awful. Still sick of seeing DBs playing 10 yards off the WRs, but when they had to, they made the plays to keep them from converting.

Winston should've been hit a lot more. I was really impressed out how he was able to hang in the pocket and just zip it down the field. That's what a franchise QB looks like.

Ditto to the O-line. Even before the injuries and shuffling, this line wasn't that good, but Foster could've been able to hide that. Blue ran very well though. He kept his feet moving and was able to break a lot of reaching tackles for extra yards. Polk did that a couple times too.

Nate Washington :x  what a blunder of a play. Could have been a TD or a huge gain in general.

Atlanta next week....I'm not exactly sure how good they are even at 3-0, but they have a better defense this year, and it's gonna be at the Georgia Dome. That's gonna be tough as ****.

1st place :pimp: Stros won :pimp:

Clowney :pimp:
Kevin Johnson :pimp: :pimp:
Patchwork oline got busy
Mallett didn't look like a basket case!

Idk what the OCs name is but I hope he's renting.

Very impressed by Kevin Johnson. He seems much more ready right now compared to Kareem his rookie year.

Kareem stunk his first year because the scheme stunk on top of them throwing him out there to the wolves expecting him to be some kind of savior at CB. It helps that Johnson has 2 vets in front of him.

Well that's true too. Who was on the other side of Kareem at that time? McCain? Quin before moving to safety?

With some early season struggles in the kicking game, the Houston Texans are set to workout Nick Novak.

The Houston Texans will be working out a group of kickers on Tuesday and free agent veteran kicker Nick Novak will be among them. Novak has been in the NFL for eight seasons and has kicked for the San Diego Chargers, Washington ********, Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.

Novak spent the bulk of his career with the Chargers where he made 86.3% of his field goal attemps in a four-season span.

Novak is being brought in because of the recent struggles of Randy Bullock in the kicking game. It will be interesting if the Texans are putting Bullock on notice or actually thiking of making a move at the position.

Injuries Have Unfortunately Held Houston Texans’ Mr. Irrelevant Lonnie Ballentine To That Name
Lonnie-Ballentine.jpg

Have you ever watched another team’s defense play and said to yourself, “man I wish our safeties would play like that?” I like Rahim Moore a lot, but the Houston Texans have an absolute baller on the shelf who for the moment can’t stay healthy early on in his young career.

Former “Mr. Irrelevant” of the 2014 NFL Draft, free safety Lonnie Ballentine is a straight up menace on the field. Anyone who follows the Texans closely has only seen a microscopic portion of him performing his craft. He trots onto the field, no pretty sticky gloves, just his taped fingers like the late hard-hitting safety Sean Taylor. This guy checks all the boxes that scouts look for in a safety to man the back half of the defense. He’s giant for his position, standing at an imposing 6-foot-3, 230 pounds. He’s fast, I mean really fast, with 4.3 40-speed that shows instantly once he successfully reads and reacts to a play.

This kid jumps like there are invisible trampolines all over the field that only he knows about. He runs like his back is on fire to vividly describe his relentless pursuit to the action. In a very small sample against the Dallas Cowboys in the preseason, Ballentine was all over the place and wreaking havoc with normality. Once he recognizes where the flow is rolling, he nearly flies to that spot and blows the play up. It is truly refreshing to see a guy play with such confidence and purpose. Unfortunately, that is the only time he has been healthy — one half of football — which makes all that detailed description of him worth nothing.

If Ballentine could replace his bones with the metal that flows through (Marvel Comics) Wolverine’s body, the Texans would have their own version of NFC monster Kam Chancellor. That seems to be the theme of this team though; once the right guy is finally drafted, which hardly ever happens, he either gets hurt early or is never healthy. With one of the most dangerous receivers in football (Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones) days ahead in the schedule, the over the top coverage of Ballentine would be a great help to what might be a long day in the Georgia Dome.
