Acute back pain or Sciatica or both?? Need help. Fit people chime in

I've been dealing with lower back issues for awhile. I just thought it was a pinched nerve which I felt could be dealt with by stretching etc. It started acting up again so finally went to a chiropractor who ran some tests and found that my hip alignment was off causing my spine to curve a bit. After the first lower back adjustment I felt like a new person. I still got a way to go, but it's good to determine what was wrong and knowing that it can be fixed.

+1 for back problems. Tried those exercises for about two weeks and they did not help.

Herniated disc at l4. Limited flexibility. Always feel stiff. Sometimes I wake up with something off and can't really walk good for a week. Something I've had to accept will be with me forever.

A lot of that stiffness could be from lack of blood flow to the area. I'd recommend concentrating on things that stimulate increased blood flow the area, ie. massage therapy, bfst, ultrasound.

ive had sciatica, took 1.5 years of convincing my doctor to get an mri after countless physical therapy, pain meds and other solutions........caused by degenerative disc on my l4/l5 had to get surgery (laminectomy &disectomy)

i had a doc like that, he said i might "have to alter my lifestyle" to limit the pain, instead of being open to a surgical option...

i said f that, sought another option, had surgery several months later, and have felt good ever since...

*i should mention that my surgery occurred after the steps you took as well, PT, NSAIDs, and lumbar epidurals over the course of several months, none of which worked...

If it's structural, definitely look into surgery. If it has a functional etiology, maybe visit an osteopathic physician so they can perform some OMM on you.

Surgery should be the LAST option!

Agreed. I think stretching and strengthening is the best way to return normal function. However, if it's a big structural problem, sometimes surgery is the only way to correct it.

Also, you got films from a chiro? Are they even trained in reading them?

Chiros look at a lot of spine films so they should be fairly versed in interpreting them but I have seen them comment on things you cant even discern on Xray.

Sometimes surgery is the only option, but I see a lot of complications from surgery ie alot of fibrosis and you wind up with the same symptoms if not worse. Also I wouldnt do a fusion unless absolutely necessary. It is a progressive cycle with altered biomechanics and eventually you need to extend the fusion.

+1 for lower back pain. try a whirlpool/spa with jets for an hour or so... will help loosen muscle spasms

Do that in addition to stretching. I stretch anywhere from 20-30 minutes, then sit in a hot tub.
