Fall Slate Features Stories on USC football, Coach Bill McCartney and Tyson/Holyfield, Among Others

Six years after the launch of 30 for 30, ESPN Films’ Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series will return in October with 30 for 30 Volume III. The first five documentaries in the 30-film flight will premiere this fall, every Tuesday in prime time on ESPN, for five straight weeks beginning October 13.

Film topics include the rise and fall of USC football under head coach Pete Carroll, a city and its mayor fighting against the odds to keep the Kings in Sacramento, the ultimately tragic story of the turbulent relationship between Olympic wrestling stars Mark and Dave Schultz and multimillionaire John du Pont, an exploration of Bill McCartney and his controversial approach running the University of Colorado football program on the way to a national championship, and Evander Holyfield’s years of waiting to fight the famed Mike Tyson and make history. The30 for 30 fall slate film trailer, released today, can be watched here: http://bit.ly/30for30Vol3.

“Through six years and two volumes, 30 for 30  has become a leading brand for storytelling,” says ESPN Films Vice President and Executive Producer John Dahl.  “And we’ve got more compelling stories that we’re lining up for Volume III. The run this fall includes four first-time directors for the series and films that will continue to capture the essence of what 30 for 30  is all about – transcending sports and engaging audiences everywhere.”

30 for 30  films will debut on ESPN as follows (all times ET):

Tuesday, Oct. 13, 9 p.m. – “Trojan War”

Pete in LA during that run was special...Trojans litterally ran LA, had LA on lock.

Anyone catch Trojan War? It was decent, I knew Reggie Bush would decline to be part of it. Reminded me of The U but not on the same level. Snoops' parts were probably the highlights

what's up with lendale white these days? does he do commentary/tv or just talk about them old trojan days

Last night's on Foxcatcher was tremendous. These 30 for 30s are appreciated.
Agreed on both. Foxcatcher the movie bored me but this doc told a great story about DuPont and the two Schultz brothers.

Funny how the movie put the Schultz brothers at Foxcatcher during the same time when in reality they really weren't.

Man Foxcatcher was amazing....the ending was very powerful and sad..haven't been able to catch the usc one yet..

Also via AwfulAnnouncing:

Additionally, ESPN revealed plans for an April 30 for 30 highlighting the mid-90s Orlando Magic teams with a documentary produced by teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway. There will also be a summer film from Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio on the relationship between Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden.

I think with all the OJ-related stuff coming out this year we will likely be sick of the topic by this summer. But I am still really anxious to see the 5-part 30 for 30.

(The series) aims to tell the complete life of Simpson and not just the unprecedented media circus that culminated in the divisive "not guilty" verdict watched around the world.

"It was such a concentration of full cultural absorption," director Ezra Edelman told reporters during Tuesday's Television Critics Association press tour. "What is lost 20 years later is that there's this story that led up to the trial. There was a history, in terms of who O.J. was as a celebrity and as a black man in America, that is fascinating. What I think is hopefully different in this is a totally engaging narrative that takes place over the course of 40 years ... not one."

Prosecutor Marcia Clark breaks a years-long silence on the subject of the trial for one part of the series.

Simpson did not grant an interview — "Oh, we tried," said Edelman. — but Simpson does appear in a lot of rarely seen footage. One such clip comes from a 2013 parole hearing in Nevada, where the prisoner appears visibly stunned when a judge asks him about his first arrest in 1994.

ESPN aims to air the film likely in two-hour chunks over the multiple days.

Here are some more that are coming around the bend, via various sources:

The 1988 Notre Dame national title team
Pro golfer John Daly
Ric Flair
Mike and the Mad Dog

I'd be more excited about the Orlando Magics one if it wasn't be done by Shaq :smh:

My dream job is to be the guy that thinks of 30 for 30 topics. I swear I have so many good ideas.

I try not to usually be one to listen to hype but OK you got me..

Business Insider:
ESPN is going to air a five-part documentary on O.J. Simpson in June, and it's already getting a ton of hype.

The series was shown at Sundance this month to critical acclaim. Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio called it "a masterful documentary" with "explosive revelations."

The Guardian's Brian Moylan called it "captivating." Variety's Brian Lowry called it a "master opus" in the highly acclaimed 30-for-30 series; Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg described it as one of this year's "richest entertainment events."

Freelance writer Chuck Klosterman upped the ante of the hype on Thursday after viewing it.

Chuck Klosterman (@CKlosterman) January 28, 2016 - But now I’ve seen OJ SIMPSON: MADE IN AMERICA, a five-part documentary that comes out in June on ESPN. It will blow your mind.

Chuck Klosterman (@CKlosterman) January 28, 2016 - When this eventually airs, it will be viewed as the greatest thing ESPN has ever produced. I almost can't believe how revelatory it is.

Wow can't wait for that OJ 30 for 30.

Anyone catch 85 Bears tonight? It was a solid watch. I was born in 85 but heard that team was amazing. Seems like they could have been a dynasty but too many factors caught up to them in the coming years, most notably their qb going down and plenty of off field distractions it seemed.

Noticed last night the Duke lacrosse one is airing on Selection Sunday.

...ESPN too smooth with these marketing plans, knowing Duke peeps will be tuned into bracketology. (Did the same thing with the Laettner 30 for 30)
