The Usual Suspects
Talk n’ Shop #63 (9/19/15):  MVP is in Japan, so he stops by the shop to chat with Doc, Karl, and Rocky. They talk about…well, not much really, as the conversations keep getting derailed. There is a random burial for former Deep South developmental wrestler Derick Neikirk, and MVP tries to tell the story of his gimmick, but they run out of time. Some good chuckles to be had, but everyone agrees nothing really was accomplished. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

MLW Radio #198 (9/20/15):  It’s the MLW summit, a special where the Mister Saint Laurent departure is addressed. Disco Inferno is the host, and he first talks to Court solo, where they start by discussing what they ordered for dinner when they went out to eat (?). Court runs down the situation, which is basically what we’ve heard: Konnan had a strong dislike for MSL and wanted him off the shows, and it got to a point where MSL resigned. Konnan joins the show, and adds he had a beef with MSL over some racial language used in an e-mail correspondence. Konnan comes across terribly here – if you don’t like someone and don’t want to be on a podcast with him, that’s fine. But stopping someone from doing a podcast you have nothing to do with is something else. To his credit, Disco did a great job not only asking questions, but pointing out Konnan’s hypocrisy when it comes to offensive language. A fascinating show. THUMBS UP

The VIP Lounge #1 (9/20/15):  A new show on the MLW network debuts, as MVP is joined by Alex Greenfield & Alice Radley for a discussion. They quickly chat about Progress Wrestling & Hoodslam, but that’s about it as far as pro graps talk goes. They spend the rest of the show discussing Mad Max (yet again), Donald Trump, MVP’s Ju Jitsu tournament, video games and religion. The political discussion is especially grating, and the show is overlong at 90 minutes. I’m not sure if this is a weekly free show or confined to the MLW VIP section, but given the minimal wrestling talk it likely won’t be appearing here again. THUMBS DOWN

Steve Austin Show #257 (9/22/15):  Hey, Steve talks to “Diamond” Dallas Page, that’s new! They talk about wrestling, acting, and…you guessed it, yoga, and it’s everything you’ve heard before. But the parts about DDP’s struggles with dyslexia and recovering from a car accident as a kid are compelling and make the show worth a listen. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

The Ross Report #84 (9/22/15):  Bruce Mitchell joins Jim Ross to run down the Night of Champions as well as various and sundry other topics. The NoC discussion is decent, but it’s worth noting Ross’ peers like Jericho and Austin have shied away from these show long recaps for lesser shows, likely for a good reason. Thankfully the talk of Impact and ROH is more interesting. However, Ross is just fighting endless strawmen here, and Bruce plays echo chamber for a lot of JR’s rants (he even uses the phrase “character babyface” in regards to Bray Wyatt!). [Mitchell’s interview starts at 9:04]  THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

WOOOOO[emoji]8482[/emoji] Nation #21 (9/23/15)  Part 2 with Eric Bischoff, as he details his dealing with the first Nitro, hiring back Lex Luger, losing respect for JJ Dillon, the Brian Pillman loose cannon character, partying with Dennis Rodman, the New World Order’s Horsemen parody, the time Eric sued Ric for missing Thunder, getting Hulk Hogan to turn heel, and the time Eric said Ric hadn’t drawn any money in wrestling. To Conrad’s credit, he asked some real tough questions, and Bischoff acquitted himself quite nicely here. THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho #180 (9/23/15):  Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope, the Insane Clown Posse, join Y2J this week. There’s some talk about their rap career, playing Woodstock ’99, and the duo’s feud with Sharon Osbourne, but the most of the content is wrestling-centric. They get into training, working a show with Bobo Brazil and the Sheik, their Stranglemania releases, shooting with the Headbangers, the differences between WCW and WWF, and working with a variety of legends. As usual, the ICP come across as very cool guys and big wrestling fans. And Jericho’s intro is worth a listen this week, as he details his experience as the mystery partner at Night of Champions. [ICP’s interview starts at 20:35]  THUMBS UP

Bauer & Pollock (9/23/15):  B&P are back to discuss Lucha Underground’s renewal and what season 2 might look like, Ring of Honor possibly going to the Tennis Channel, TNA attendance & Bound For Glory, Sting’s health, possible Wrestlemania matches, the Bellator Dynamite event, La Sombra unmasking, Brock Lesnar returning to MSG, and baseball. It’s not their best show – nothing much in the way of scoops, and topics like TNA are just repetitive and tiresome at this point. THUMBS IN THE MIDDLE

Art of Wrestling #269 (9/24/15):  Hacksaw Jim Duggan makes his first full appearance on the show (having previously appeared on a live outing). He and Colt go over Duggan’s early days in the business, working in Hawaii, why he brought a 2×4 to the ring, moving to the WWF, his drug arrest with the Iron Sheik, his battle with cancer and charity work, and more. Duggan might be the best podcast guest from his generation of wrestlers, with a great memory and a lot of fun stories. Colt, to his credit, keeps things moving and gets clarification at the right points. THUMBS UP

Steve Austin – Unleashed #256 (9/17/15):  Part 2 with Scott Hall, detailing how he got to WWF, his tryout, his Razor vignettes, working in Puerto Rico, working with the 1-2-3 Kid (with the whole angle planned 6 months in advance!), the ladder match with Shawn Michaels, leaving the WWF, giving Sting the Crow gimmick, the New World Order, returning to the WWF, getting sober and dealing with his PTSD, the upcoming movie about his journey, and more. It gets a little goofy when they brings up song lyrics to compare to the business, but this again is an excellent show and a must-listen for any fans of 90’s wrestling. THUMBS UP & BEST OF THE WEEK

The Jim Cornette Experience #95 (9/24/15):  Jim and Alice kick off the show talking about Nick Gage again, fans hopping the rails at WWE shows, Kenny Bolin taking credit for the Montreal Screwjob, Scott Walker dropping out of the GOP candidacy, and Planned Parenthood. Then they’re joined by Brian Zane of the Youtube channel Wrestling With Wregret. They talk about his videos, the Cornette parody that gave him a lot of exposure, and (of course) the Vince Russo parody. The talk is short and didn’t really do much for me. I tend not to include intros in the overall grading of the show, but in this case the intro is nearly twice as long as the actual interview! [Zane’s interview starts at 41:40]  THUMBS DOWN

Helluva Deal (9/24/15):  The second leftover show before the MLW Radio exile, this one sees MSL and Kevin Sullivan conclude their rundown of Bash at the Beach ’96. You get Kevin’s insight into teaming with the Giant, some very pro-Kevin Nash and Scott Hall talk, and the hullaballoo surrounding the main event. Best of all, you get to hear about the Legend of Joe Gomez and just why he was booked on this show again Mongo McMichael. THUMBS UP

Talk is Jericho #181 (9/25/15):  Director Eli Roth returns to TiJ. He and Jericho talk about Zapped (naturally), Italian horror movies, Roth’s new film the Green Inferno, traveling to the Amazon to film, how they paid the locals to appear in the film, the dangers of shooting in the jungle, the film’s distribution problems, learning from Quinten Tarantino, upcoming films, and more. Roth is an enjoyable guest, but be warned there is some overlap from his prior appearances. Just ,ake sure you skip the intro, as Jericho goes on and on about fans jumping in the ring. [Roth’s interview at 19:21] THUMBS UP
