What's the big deal with the pope coming to the US?

This religion and this religious leader is still a big deal to that group.

The media coverage of it all does seemed a bit forced in that they know the hype they're giving it really isn't actually being matched by what's happening

I handled all my business in the city and Harlem yesterday to avoid any problems today.

I do find it funny the Pope is visiting during Yom Kippur

Someone explain his significance

The Roman Catholic church has some beliefs that could be considered conservative and some beliefs that could be considered liberal. The previous two Popes emphasized the the conservative views such as opposition to birth control, abortion, divorce and gay marriage. The current Pope, Francis I, emphasizes the liberal aspects of the Catholic Church. Tolerate people who are different, encourage world peace, oppose the death penalty, be skeptical of the rich and powerful and work to alleviate poverty.

Within the context of American politics, Pope Francis is important because he is making it difficult for conservatives in this Country. The formula for modern American conservatism is a combination of loud and visible demonstrations of fidelity to Jesus Chris as well as a love of laissez-faire capitalism, demonizing of poor people, "tough on crime" politics and a bellicose foreign policy. From 1980 until 2013, the Pope, the most influential Christian voice in the world, choose to act as a scold against gay people and women. Francis has been Pope since 2013 and by emphasizing Christianity's interest in social justice, he is stripping away some of the quasi-religious sanctity that American conservatives have been claiming for decades.

He is more or less telling American conservatives that you can either have Jesus or you can have your tax cuts and military spending but you cannot have all of those things.
