RIP New York Hip-Hop? (Need Some Feedback)

eXquire was in a great position to really take over back in 2011-2012 with "Lost In Translation". But that deal with Universal did nothing for him and he lost a lot of his buzz over time.

Yeah, I thought he had a shot a few years ago when A$ap Mob and Flatbush Zombies and them began to get a little buzz, but he never took off. He has a niche fanbase and market of weirdo/drug rap.

He hasn't even done as well as DZA, who has managed to build relationships and gain a fanbase.

eX changed his sound for a min and lost all his buzz.

He said he had a Dave Chappelle moment and started feeling like a parody and sellout for white hipsters, said he couldn't tell if people were laughing with or at him as far as his out there ODB-esque persona. Every interview _'s asking him what's the craziest thing he's done in so and so place, etc

He scaled back and tried to do more "conscious" **** hoping _'s would take him more seriously but that **** backfired severely and led to him getting dropped :smh:

I think he's more comfortable with himself now as an artist so he doesn't feel the need to cast a certain "image" in either direction anymore

I don't know how many times i gotta reiterate this but NYC is in a GREAT space musically right now. Dope artist in every lane, if being on "top" of rap means dominating the sound of radio/ clubs it's just not gonna happen anytime soon. The club scene just isn't the same anymore and radio is legitimately based off of patterns and studies rather than whats moving in the culture.

But as far as quality NYC i would say is third behind LA & Chicago

I would say LA first NYC second. Looking at the patterns on my phones it's nothing but young and established LA and NY artist. I only listen to that other **** when it's turn up time

Imma keep saying it, Conway >>>>>>>>> every NEW NY rapper mentioned in here

That's them Buffalo ****** right?

I mean, they can spit....but only so many gun bars I can take over below average production.

Dave East >>>>. And it's not close.

Plug me in to some good Westide Gun and Conway. I'll give it another shot.

Ain't you the one that told us Milly Rock and Panda were on the radio and in the clubs because they were already the hottest songs in the streets tho?

ACTUALLY noooooo. because iv'e personally never heard milly rock on the radio. :rolleyes

Panda on the other hand did spark in the streets/social media and then blew up. i don't know what that has to do with my post tho, turn up music and club play should not be the barometer of what's keeping a region on top. it's just one of the foundations.

What are some prime eXquire tracks? I saw the name before but never checked him out.

Some of my favorite eXquire tracks:

The Big Fat Intro

Triple F

Huzzah

Chicken Spot Rock

Huzzah (Remix) ft/ El-P, Despot, Danny Brown, Heems

Lou Ferigno's Mad

Build-A-*****

The Gold Watch

Mau Mau ft/ Maffew Ragazino

Illest ****** Breathin'

How has one never hear "Milly Rock" on radio? That's absurd. THAT should've been the record that got pushed. Not Panda. Milly Rock was organic...and never charged, but it was felt in the culture nationwide. 2 Milly got bad manage my behind him. They don't even have a wiki page for the song :smh:

And no, NYC is not in a "Great space musically". It goes like this:

1. Atlanta & the South
2. West Coast
3. Midwest
4. East Coast

Y'all NYC ***** need to start supporting Baltimore rappers. We East Coast and got next :smokin. YBS Skola, Tate Kobang, GMG Tadoe, FMG Ball....are all making waves.

Hip Hop just needs an East Coast revival. Feel like Meek is trying to do that by giving the young and up and comers a look like A Boogie, YBS Skola, ScootaUpNext, Shy Glizzy, Young Ma...and Meek started ***** w/ the Smurdas before a lot of the industry did.

If u look at record sales and downloads/streams the perception of who's "running the game" might change. Every single time i tell someone to list these artist that are so "popping" and "relevant" they refuse to do so

So you don't care if it's good, as long as it's different?

How is Drake different than Max B?

What's so different about Future? He's like a hardcore T-Pain.

Young Thug is a mumbling Lil Wayne.

You act like they're bringing something new an innovative.
The first sentence negated your whole post. How you judge an artist and have such a strong opinion about his body of work when you haven't even heard a whole project, and you based all that off his group name...
SO if my team is called the shoot em up bang bang squad.... im gonna be a versatile artist on that roster??? lol  nah homie, ill be rhyming about 9s glocks and shotties... his crew's name is coke boyz, thats all i need to know..

that's where we differ HEAVILY, for one despite Panda beinga future sounding track it's a MUCH better song than "milly rock". Not to mention if that "organic" song popped everyone would have been quick to dismiss it as NYC taking the souths sound.

As far as quality goes that's all personal opinion, but if you think ATL is making the best rap music right now i'm not gonna even delve into that convo because we clearly are looking for two different sounds.

Dog, EVERYBODY loves Milly Rock . Nobody dismissed it. The dance is cool. It's organic NYC party music...and authentic to Brooklyn. Milly Rock popped more in real life &I social media....than it did the actual charts. Like is said....2 Milly got some bad management.

And to your 2nd point....as far as whose making "quality" music right now....it's spread out, and hard to define. For one, everybody defines quality differently. 2) That's very subjective.

I was speaking moreso on what regions are dominating the sounds and influencing hip hop. It's definitely the South and West Coast. Don't really think that's arguable.

clearly southern production is influencing hiphop, that was never my argument. quality wise and music i listen too NYC is in a good space, we have ****** in every lane who make good music & that's all i care about. 4-5 years ago outside of the fact that we weren't really representing mainstream wise the real problem was that we didn't have much talent in general. I can't say that same thing now.. from the young cats to the OG's good music is coming from NYC right now and it's a proper balance of sounds reppin the city.

For real. Once i saw that part, I aint even bother to reply. That type of production & rapping aint his style i guess

I will continue to stand by Conway being the best new rapper in NY state regardless of "weak" production

I like Westside better, because he has a more unique voice that stands out.

If u look at record sales and downloads/streams the perception of who's "running the game" might change. Every single time i tell someone to list these artist that are so "popping" and "relevant" they refuse to do so

I've been wondering this. People consider mixtapes the definition of popping these days. People are willing to spend nothing on a free mixtape.

But they DO spend money on merch and shows.

Albums are an outdated metric.

Why spend money on an album when Apple Music is the same price with unlimited music?
