RIP New York Hip-Hop? (Need Some Feedback)

FACTS.

Chicago took it from Waka.
The whole drill sound is basically what Waka was doin at the beginning of his career minus the (loud) yelling.

Then NY took it from Chicago.

Yeah. Drill was Chicagos variation of minimilisitc Atl gutter trap music....but they made their own distinct sound and ran with it.

But GS9 and them were definitely influenced heavy by drill. Throwing up them limp gang signs that Chicago drill dudes started doing....and using some of the slang.

I actually thought these dudes said they were heavy on Dipset back then

They shared the majority of their fanbase on a street level.

G Unit was bigger with the casual fans partly because Roc A Fella didn't really allow Cam's star power to reach its full potential because a certain owner of the company was jealous and is complicit in the fall of NY. But..

Leave it to NY ****** to claim that they are in fact not biting but that the region they're copying actually got it from them in the first place.

Typical

Ummmm are we forgetting Stack Bundles ? My god. My son was screaming squad 10+ years ago

I was reading that scratching my head

What

So how is Kanye is bigger than Cam ever could have been

And Cam was at his peak with Rocafella, and went down hill with the poolside clip and Rocafella/Dipset breaking up

Lol at ***** running to go find every reference of the word squad to come out of New York.

As is That's the only word them gs9 ****** was taking from Chicago slang.

all them lil dudes have Instagram videos still up where they're on their block listening to all them Chicago dudes. They clearly were looking up to them dudes and they were heavy influences. Why is that hard to admit?

Exactly. Idk why it's hard for NY dudes to admit another place has influenced them. It's hilarious lol

Who is proud and brags about GS9 and Bobby Shmurda?

ok, and...wack rappers were influenced by other wack rappers. You want a cookie?

It's funny how dudes grasp at straws to take credit for slang and every little regional thing they do, but then downplay New York.

You should be proud of lyricism, not wack rappers who are easily imitated, because they don't have talent in the first place.

**** are you talking about? We're only even talking about them because dude bought up that fact they had superstar potential.

I still play that Terror Squad album.

I'm confused, is someone trying to say Wayne started Squad? That's laughable.

"Pass The Glock" was DANGEROUS.

Had the promo copy.w

Kanye is one of the 3 biggest artists in hip-hop. Who isn't he bigger than?

And that contributes to my point, "Big Brother" Ye talks about some of the BS Jay did to him. And Jay and Cam didn't see eye to eye, so just imagine what he was doing to Cam. At the time Cam was the 2nd biggest artist on Roc. The 'Purple Haze' delay? The Roc break up? As you said Cam was at his peak with ROC, and his downfall was the breakup and the way Diplomats left. I mean look a Juelz he was handcuffed to Def Jam and still might be to this day, he debuted in 03. 2 well received projects between Diplomatic Immunity and FMTY dropped his 2nd joint came out 10 years ago.

Even look at the poolside incident. He was punched by Tru Life. At the time Jay-Z's "artist". You think he signed that dude cause he believed in him? He signed him to go at Dip Set.

So you're telling me Jay has NO blood on his hands when it comes to NY's downfall?

No.

What we are saying is GS9 and some of the NY rappers now were influenced by Chicago drill. Using some of their slang...saying "squad" in their ad libs the way Chicago dudes said it.

This turned into NY dudes saying Chicago dudes got the squad ad libs from Flocka...which is true. But then, NY dudes came in here saying NY "been" saying squad as an ad libs, and posted Stack Bundles saying squad. Which was way different than how they say it now...but whatever. Somebody posted a "Squad up" song by bundles...then I posted that Wayne had "Squad up" before bundles.

Just a stupid chain of who did it first over an adlib that's used many different ways. Point is, the NY drill movement is heavily influenced by the Chicago drill..

Big Brother was basically that nobody thought Kanye was a rapper, but he kept improving. Everyone will tell you that. So if Jay didn't try to stunt Kanye's career, why would he do it to Cam.

Cam had as much to do with his demise as anyone. He sold some records, was the star in Paid In Full, was riding high. Even after Rocafella. The main problem was the beef with 50 happen, which coincided with Dip Set breaking up. Cam is a good enough rapper where he would have done Rick Ross or better with 50. But when 50 can't beat you lyrically he goes another way, and that was getting Jimmy and Juelz. And then came the poolside self ether. Juelz getting his Lloyd Banks on didn't help things either. So Jim was basically holding down Dip Set dolo for a couple of years.

I think Jay has some issues with Uncle Murda and Tru Life never coming out. But without Rocafella and their in house producers, I'm not sure how good their projects would have been. I like Murda but I was never a fan of Tru Life fan.

I thought about making a Terror Squad thread in here a few months ago. I thought Armageddon and Prospect were nice. I'm mad they never took off. Didn't make the thread because I doubt more than 5 people in music section know that album and the group.

Is it fair to say NYC is in a space where the south was in the early 90's ? Like we're gonna need our own No Limit, Ca$h Money, Rap A Lot, Hypnotize Minds, etc. to kick these mainstream doors down like they did ?

Jay didn't wanna sign Ye.
I'm sure he didn't wanna sign Cam.
He's just a business man.

With Cam they didn't like one another. And they both felt it was worth sacrificing the financial benefits of keeping a relationship. If Cam and Jay could've come to an understanding the way him and NaS did NY wouldn't be in its current state. They don't play Diplomats in 40/40 come on. Jay played a part in the city's downfall he knew he could adjust. He followed BIG blueprint from 'Life After Death', still does. Cam did when he was at Roc as well.

As you mentioned, Jim Jones was one of NYs top rappers circa 07. Do we need further evidence about the death of NY hip-hop and absence of talent?

Jim Jones was a TOP rapper in the last 10 years in NY. **** he still might be, which is scary and sad at the same time.

I don't think Jim Jones is any less talented than the B/C grade rappers of the south, but there's no way he should be a top artist from ANY region and expect to be respected anywhere.

Which further proves NY is dead.
Cam should be able to do a project with a Harry Fraud or something new with Araab and at least have a 2Chainz level Buzz and Rick Ross level of critical acclaim. Where's NY's Juicy J? We need a veteran than can kinda recreate himself and stay vintage form. Me and my homies was talking about that few days before I made the thread.

NY coming back has to be done on all levels. Our representation is absent in damn near all levels. Talent is the issue with the young generation and I guess work ethic, and diminished skills is the problem with the old.

He didn't want to sign Kanye, because he wasn't good. You keep either overlooking that point or leaving it out.

Cam couldn't get along with Juelz or Jim to hold it together, so his relationship with Jay doesn't matter.
