MAZDA Coupe Concept - RX9 Confirmed for 2020 - Concept to be Reveled TAS2017

Yeah I guess the technology has advanced enough that it'll be less of a hassle to own?

All we can do is hope for the best but really, I can't complain with any additional sport coupe options out there.

I know it's only a concept but I also like the interior, back to basic look without looking dated. I like it.

Think it'll be priced in the $40-50k range?

Really hard to guess right now, I think it might be a hard sell for a Mazda at that price. Maybe more in the $30k-$35k range? Go against the 370Z/2-Series/ATS?

I don't think it'll be cheaper than $30k just because the Miata/BRZ-FRS already occupies that price range with Honda likely throwing their own int he shuffle in the near future.

I doubt it. Being that this is rumored to be a Hybrid, and very likely a Halo car for the brand, I'd imagine pricing will be closer to the FD RX7 as opposed to the mass marketed and more moderately priced RX8.

A bare bones FD was about 35k in 1995, roughly 55k in 2015 dollars. 42k in 95 for a sequential turbo variant, equating to roughly 66k in 2015. I presume there will only be one drive-train option and pricing will be closer to their top tier variant, if not more.

You think so?

I don't know, I feel like this is going to be more mass produced with the current sports coupe boom.

I bought an RX8 in 2007 and absolutely hated it, traded it in 5 months later for a 350Z

hopefully this is more like the RX7

can you elaborate more on what you hated about the rx8?

The 8 had a lot to live up to with the 7, and I don't think Mazda achieved it. To me, it just didn't have the same presence.

Still looked nice though.

I'm a fan of the rotary, but don't think I could ever deal with the maintenance/mileage.

The sound though :x :x :pimp:

I mean, only time will tell. The fact it's rumored to be a Hybrid is what really has me thinking their plan is to turn this into a Halo car for the brand. Hybrids are typically priced rather high compared to their ICE counterparts. Especially when they're sports cars. Range is greatly reduced when lead foots are pushing out fifty'leven foot pounds of torque from a stop. I can see the electric motor being used to appease CAFE standards, but moreso for performance reasons. Limitless torque on the low end and a Rotarys ability to rev to the moon should make for an extremely fast car with a well balanced power band.

Mazda knows that the Wankel has a somewhat bad reputation and isn't going to have a huge mass market appeal. They also know that there are some diehard "Rotards" out there who would love to see it return. Everything I've read about this car tells me it's not intended to sell en masse, but rather make a good name for the brand and move more of their lesser cars. If it weren't for all the recent coverage on the car, I'd think it was just another Vaporware Concept Car.

Interesting way to look at it, though correct me if I am wrong but we are only a few years away from mass produced electric trubochargers (that is what I assume you mean by electric motor because the rumors earlier this month was electric turbo by 2020 iirc), aren't we?

I think Audi has been working on it for close to a decade now and ready to release it on one of their RS variants. I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes more common by the time this new RX comes out and would make it more affordable.

Back to the RS, I think the RS4 is the first to get the electric turbo and I am curious how much they'll be priced.

I wonder how many rotors this car will have. I heard this won't have the traditional 13B. A quad would be nice!

“You will have to wait until 2017 to find out what powers this car”, said an “executive”. "That’s our rotary’s 50th anniversary year.”

The new engine will allegedly get a two-stage turbo system with an “electric turbo assist”, which will engage at low rpm, while the standard turbo will kick in at higher revs.

“Engineers will employ a capacitor to beef up the rotary’s ‘instability’ at low rpm, and when boost pressure rises, a standard turbocharger will engage to keep the flow of power coming”, added the Mazda insider.

Wow that's a good looking car. It doesn't look retro at all to me.

Looks good to me. Headlights are a little weird, but I bet this car looks insane in person
