You could prevent their craziness not manifesting itself in the form of shooting sprees though by making it nearly impossible to obtain the tool that is necessary to carry out a shooting spree.

Nah its annoying, dudes will blame guns when dudes are clearly evil and thought out these evil acts and planned them out. Blaming a gun is an easy cop out to not have to talk about the sick culture these mass shooters are created in. Dudes will blame guns on crime in chicago and not the social engineering that created the conditions there.
Its that whole liberal fake smart mess, take an easy way out to band aid and or ignore the root causes for the problems.

Guns are a problem, but they aren't the igniter. We live in a violent society where unfortunately there are plenty of guns to go around allowing these twisted *****s to "express themselves."

Like people will make detailed manifestos on why they did it, plan out ever thing down the the most minute move, prepare advance blue prints on how they will do it, give subtle warnings to their friends and families, and we still say "oh they are just mentally ill, its the guns that are the issue".

Those are colonized people. Plus drugs, guns and Wal-Mart are doing way more harm in central and south America.
