http://clipsnation.com >> It's time to start wondering if Doc Rivers has run his course with Clippers http://buzztap.com/-3KFuD1

I think this article may be a little extreme, but the writer makes some good points. Doc's insistence on keep an entire unit of bench players in for long stretches is just nonsensical. And the fact that Jamal Crawford has played the most 4th quarter minutes of any player on the Clippers is mind-boggling to me.

Doc really loyal to Jamal man . Like others have said, Jamal is a world class NBA citizen. Great guy. Great locker room guy. Wise veteran...but it's time to either cut the cord, or diminish his role.

That super 6th man microwave role hasn't been effective since Manu in '07. And Manu's ball movement, ability to get to the line, and defense made him a lot more than that.

Bench lineups that feature ball movement, spacing and defensive versatility is what works today. Jamal's game doesn't fit.

And if Doc doesn't learn how to stagger....I like Doc as a coach. Underrated offensive coach. But his lineup management leaves a lot to be desired.

Literally my thoughts to a tee. He's so good at x's and o's and really is probably the best in the league at plays out of timeouts, but through six games his lineup management has been horrid. There's no reason for Jamal to lead the team in 4th quarter minutes and his insistence on playing those five non starter units is infuriating.
He has to start staggering. Just has to

Harden had 46, Howard had 20/20. And without cp3, the rockets still needed a goaltend to seal the victory. I'm ok with that.

I agree with you guys on docs lineup management. But to say his run with the clips is over is nonsense. This will be the first year that the clips have had a championship caliber roster since he's been there. There needs to be more of a stagger with starters and subs. JC needs to be placed in a lineup that allows him to be less of a ball dominating guard and more of a spot up shooter and slasher. Lance needs to be lance, and PP needs to be able to have the freedom to get to his spots in the 4th quarter. It's a long season, and I'm hoping that by the new year we will be in 6th gear blowing teams away.

I am a little bothered by the fact that we had 2 marquee matchups early and we missed opportunities to let those teams know that we're done fugging around with them...but watching the games, I think they know.

We lost to the Warriors at their place by four, and that was after grabbing a 10 point lead in the 4th. At the same time last year, they blew the breaks off of us. That's encouraging. What's more, that game captured our bench in a nutshell. The lows, (down 17 after being up 23-19,) to the highs, up 10. Unfortunately, that inconsistency looks like it'll be a hallmark for that unit which makes it imperative that doc adjust and tinkers with rotations.

We played minus CP Saturday and despite's doc Rivers insane decisions, we were right there. That's encouraging as well. Blake Griffin is turning into a more athletic Blake Nowtizki, which is great.

All in all, really encouraged over the first six games and we have a good opportunity to get some separation in the division this week with very winnable games. The west is in flux right now, and this is a great chance to create some distance with everyone else.

Memphis is in a tailspin, and IMO this is a game we have to have. Also, we have to find a way to get Wes Johnson and / or Lance Stephenson on the court. They have both been extreme pluses on the floor, and we're much better when theya re on the floor rather than Jamal Crawford.

According to NBA dot com, Austin Rivers is holding opponents to 36.2% shooting when he's guarding them. They shoot 42.1% when he does not.
Opponents are just 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three when Rivers is guarding them, down from their normal 34.6% mark when he isn't the defender.
Since he's gotten to LA he's really put forth the effort on Defense. His mechanics defensively aren't the best, but he really competes on that end. Was competing big time last week guarding steph and klay down the stretch.

Also, another development I'm watching: Paul Pierce. We play him at the four w/ the second unit, but he's been awful defensively, and he can't rebound at all. Then we play him in the 4th because of his ability to knock down shots down the stretch (Completely understandable) but he's been a lowkey liability down the stretch with his boarding and defending when he plays the 3 too.
Opponents are shooting 52.8% against Paul Pierce. It's 66.7% on non-threes.
Is Paul Pierce's "clutchness" and three point shooting good enough to sacrifice the other end of the floor? I'm not so sure. I understand you want Paul in the game in crunch time, but you have Wesley Johnson and Lance Stephenson who can be just as if not more capable than PP from a duality perspective. And if it isn't PP then Doc has Jamal out there closing the game out. Lance and Wes have got to play more important minutes. They are helping us and we lowkey need them. It'll be interesting to watch this develop and play out.

That's encouraging about Austin, but he needs to play much better offensively than he did against the Rockets if CP is going to be out for more time. I'm hoping for a better performance from him tonight.

Yup Yup. By the way CP has been updated to probable, so hopefully that means he's on tap to play tonight.

Semi Related,  Austin has an issue with Balance, especially offensively. It's why he falls so much. When he goes into his offensive "arsenal," his forehead points straight to the floor and he basically is on the verge of tipping over whenever he attacks. His game would lowkey blossom a bit if he fixed that.

I would like to dive a littler deeper into Pierce's stats. Was he guarding Barnes when he went off? Idk, I feel like those stats may be a little skewed this early. Maybe, I'm wrong. How many FGA/3PA are we talking about in those percentages?

Also, can someone pull up Austin's layup numbers this year? I feel like he's gotten better this year at finishing at the rim. The floater still looking awful though.

Hope we put a beating on Memphis tonight

Pierce joints are extremely skewed. He doesn't play much for one, but I honestly don't know. Just saw that and nabbed it and put it in here. Whenever he's in the game and we play him at the 4 though, from an eye test perspective we struggle big time with the rebounding. But its far too early to bail on PP. It's only 6 games. But we were a bad rebounding team last year, so that is something to keep an eye on. PP Made a huge 3 in the 4th against the Rockets. The Crawford experiment though has to stop.

And I agree on the layup sentiment about Austin. His shot will also come along too I think. Wish he could play off the ball in the 2nd unit with an actual PG.

Yea I have a feeling it's 66% on PP but it could be 6/9 or something. If we're in March and it's still like that I'll be very concerned. Also, wirh the rebounding I may be wrong but I think we've been going a lot with a PP at the 4 and Josh at the 5. That is just not a good idea

Idk why we haven't gone to a CP3/JJ/PP/Blake/DJ lineup to close out every game. All of a sudden we hve a legit 3rd option for big time shots. Maybe we're concerned about the perimeter defense with that lineup but I would like to try it at least against teams with weak offensive wings.

The biggest issue is still mass subs in the 2nd and late 3rd/early 4th. Idk how Doc hasn't adjust the roations. It's crazy.

^^^ My theory is that since most of the second unit are new players to the team, Doc thinks by keeping out there together for long stretches they'll eventually gel and start to click better . . . or he's just an idiot.

Doc actually staggering the lineups tonight. Too bad we can't any open shots.

Anybody else thrown off by Don Mclean budding in between Ralph and Mike? When did they start doing this?

Hope we can finish strong in the 4th.

-Edit-

Doc got PP out there with the starters. He must have read my posts

Im not the coach.

But there's no way they thought fouling Memphis up 3 was a good idea. Come on this isnt rocket science. Worst three point shooting team in the league, let them try and make a three instead of us giving them two points and putting the pressure on ourselves to make free throws and inbounds the ball. They aint the damn warriors

5 of our first seven though I'll take it

Said the same thing in the NBA thread. So dumb. We were lucky to hold on to this one. Wilson though :nthat:

I have a strong feeling DJ ain't playing on Wednesday. Gonna come up with flu or food poisoning or something.

Doc Rivers is over coaching his *** off this season and it's such a shame because some of the sets he runs are gorgeous.

Literally hacking dwight and Clint for no reason, fouling the grizzlies when we're up three, not staggering the lineups, (until tonight) just terrible decisions from doc.

However, that being said we weren't supposed to be a finished product at the beginning of the season. Those things hopefully will be ironed out. It's just good that we aren't sacrificing wins in the process of figuring things out.

The play to get JJ that 3 in the 4th was a masterpiece

Sometimes I catch myself taking his out of bounds plays for granted until I see some of the plays other teams make coming out of timeouts

You guys think last night was an anomaly or has Doc finally realized keeping one of Blake or CP3 on the court for at least 45 minutes a game is necessary.

Im loving that we're 5-2 and we're shooting like ****. Once those open 3's start falling...::x

Was debating with my brother about the exact same thing lol I think he finally got it and is coming around to staggering. He says it was only because they were monitoring CP's minutes. I didn't agree with that though because CP played like 33 minutes, which is par for the course for him so hopefully he got the memo.

And yeah man Doc has shortcomings, but it isn't with the X's and O's. He's probably in the top 3 in the league in that regard.

i def think PP has to be played in a late game lineup w/ CP3/JJ/DJ?BG32. or lance @ 2 if more defense is needed.

i think doc is trying a bunch of stuff out early to see what works and by xmas, the kinks will be worked out.

so fascinating that since this is the most important season in franchise history how everything is magnified (understandably) i have to def reel myself back and realize that there are 70+ games to go.

especially since the clips could legit be 7-0

^^ I feel the same way. I'm usually not stressing until the playoffs start but this year might be the window is starting to close as far CP3's prime.

Gotta go to a farewell dinner for my coworker's last day. I'm trying to convice her to pick an establishment that has TV's . Really don't wanna miss this game.
