OFFICIAL LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS 2023-2024 SEASON THREAD

Really could do this all day. You can't sit up here and tell me Austin isn't a good defender.

In your opinion, what measurement(s) are the best at analyzing defense for perimeter players? For bigs I like to look at opponents' FG% at the rim to see if the big is doing a solid job at protectig the rim. Perimeter players are bit more tricky to me. The eye test tells me Austin is a good defender but then JD posted some stats that said otherwise and now I'm confused

Its tough man. There's just not enough defensive statistics that one can use to evaluate defense outside of a team setting.

For me, I just use the eye test, and see if the basic individual defense stats support that. But even then, I lean on the eye test more because the eye test when it comes to defense is more reliable than for offense IMO. You can trick someone into thinking they are a good offensive player via the eye test. (Crawford for example, even though he was better this season) you cant trick someone into thinking they can play defense though.

This is no knock on JD at all, but if you casually watch the clippers, and have a predisposed discarding of Austin Rivers, then you are going to say that he's an awful defender or whatever. As a critical watcher of LAC, I saw him switch onto Kawai last postseason and helped save our season. I saw Paul George go off on us this season...until we put Austin on him. I've seen guys like CJ, Dame, etc. not get locked up, but contained by him. He really is a talented on ball defender.

So really, there is no one stat that tells you if someone is a good defender or not but I would contest that if you watch LAC play often enough, and critically enough, there's no way you couldn't say he isnt a good defender. In fact, I feel as though it would be obvious

^Repped. I kind of felt the same way (eye test is best for defense) but I don't wanna sound like Charles Barkley talmbout, "analytics don't matter."

In other news, I just got this email.

eye test is best to me. is a guy staying in front of his man, and challenging shots? or is he getting blown by and forcing his team to have to rotate? i dont like stat analysis in basketball, because you can always find a stat that suggests that a player is good at something, then find 2 other stats that suggest he sucks at it.

this was the case last year with james harden's "improving" defensive efficiency.

i've seen players open a game and go 6/9 w/ 17pts against elite defenders and end the game 2/11 w/ 4pts because of how hard they had to work for shots against the best defenders

Clips looking every bit the part thru two games

Stifling defense, elite depth, looking every bit of the top 5 defense and top six bench that we were this season

Its weird watching a clipper team throw their bench in and the lead gets extended.

Game ball goes to the bench tonight. Beailed the starters out in both halves. Blake looks like he's pressing out there.

Anybody should be able to watch a full game of Clippers and see Austin can D up.
I don't care what stats you show otherwise, defense is more about making your opponent work than it is stopping them or flat out preventing them from scoring.

Austin turns a dribbler into a passer and a bad passer into a Turnover machine.

His positioning is always on point. You're going to work on offense if he's on you. That's all I'd ask for as a Coach, effort first and foremost, containment, and tire your opponent out. Job well done 10/10 times with Austin

we have had some really beautiful offensive possesions in the last two games w/ 5-6 passes that end with a DJ layup or dunk.

DJ has got a few great seal plays where it has ended in an easy hook shot as well.

Absolutely. Great luxury that we can get separation thanks to the bench, but not something we can rely on. Starters needed to be better next game and I think they will be.

Give kudos to Doc for taking PP out of the rotation. Hope it continues

No doubt. One of the more surprising developments with the team in a season that's been full of surprising developments, but thanks goodness for whatever made Doc see the light.

@ClipsNationSBN: RT @FlyByKnite: C.J. McCollum is -16 in the 27 minutes he's been guarded by Austin Rivers in this series.

Worst rebounding game of the series

Dame and CJ were on fire, but we caught them and even had a lead late in that game. They only had 96 points with them going crazy. We got some key stops but couldnt finish plays by rebounding. Its been our achillies heel all season and if portland is to extend this series and win it, thats their advantage that they must win, and they did tonight.

Blows my mind. We weren't eem boxing out. Like they forgot wht was workingfor us the first two games. Blake's jumper still shaky.

Well, that's the thing - rebounded like crap, both McCollum and Lillard went off and we still had a chance to pull this one out on the road. I figured Portland would win one at home. Not happy that we blew a 4th quarter lead, but if we make the necessary adjustments we SHOULD take game 4 and have an opportunity to close in 5.

I mean I picked us in 5, with the game portland winning was game 3. When you factor in how hard it is to beat a team 3 straight times, them being on a high due to their first playoff game at home, if portland was going to get a game it was game 3.

Now in game 4, you just hope tht you dont get killed on the glass, and that JJ and the rest of the team will shoot better from distance. That was the worst 3pt shooting performance all season by us and we were still right there at the end. We should win game 4 if we cleanup the glass. I felt like the defense we played last night, particularly on cj and dame was very good. Weve played cj and dame 7 times now, you arent keeping a great scorer down for 7 straight games, ideally.

On to game 4 baby :smokin

@LAClippersStats   now

The @LAClippers bench of Rivers/Craw/Green/Wejo/Cole have a def RTG of 87.1 and a Off RTG of 107.3 through 3 games. #LACatPOR
Our bench has been fantastic for the most part since christmas, it's a huge part of our success.

The bench wasn't that potent in game 3, and that definitely had a direct effect on the outcome. A big reason why games 1 and 2 looked so easy for us was because of this lineup. Hopefully they return to form for game 4, but we'll see. All of those players in that lineup (minus cole) are inconsistent, and being on the road in the playoffs may not bold well for a 5 man bench lineup for an extended period of time.

clippers had their worst 3pt shooting game of the season in game 3 and almost won the game. I think the clippers will win 4.

CP broke his hand

Blake reinjured is quad

all in the same game.

Jesus. We aren't getting out of the first round.
