Don't Let Kobe's Final Games Keep You From Hating Him

My relationship with Kobe can be defined by a movie scene. Towards the end of Anchorman, Ron Burgundy falls into a bear pit at the zoo and his arch nemesis Wes Mantooth holds the ladder that would eventually save him. As Mantooth literally holds Burgundy's life in his hands, he tells him,"I pure straight hate you, but goddamnit I respect you,” before offering a lending hand.

I've hated Kobe Bean Bryant for the better part of his career and it was some of the most fun I've had watching sports. He was so smug when he declared for the NBA Draft, sunglasses on his head, smile on his face, fresh off taking Brandy to the prom. I wasn't hating, just felt like he was flying too close to the sun. And I was right.

I laughed maniacally when he shot those two airballs against the Jazz in the '97 playoffs. When he ran Shaq out of town, I relished in his inability to take the Lakers deep into the playoffs with no help.

The Chris Paul deal and the Steve Nash/Dwight Howard Era were my doing. I reached in my bag of tricks and did some Caribbean brujeria to thwart it all. Fun ******* times, let me tell you.

You see, for me, sports are more fun when a villain is involved. Being a Knicks fan helped me direct my hate somewhere else because watching them was draining every fiber of my being, especially during the Kobe era. Michael Jordan killed my team every year, but I viewed him differently than I did Kobe in his prime. MJ transcended the game with his dominance and sneakers. I ate that **** up like most kids my age. I only hated his guts when he played my Knicks because I knew they couldn't beat the Bulls. My relationship with Jordan is complicated. My relationship with Kobe, on the other hand, is very simple. I hate Kobe like I hate Duke, the Boston Red Sox, and the Dallas Cowboys. We will be foes until the end.

Kobe is Desiigner to Jordan's Future. He's a straight clone of His Airness. The low-post fadeaway, the single fist pump after a game-winner, it makes me sick! When I see him pull that ****, I scream, "He swear he Mike!," at the TV. Do I think Kobe is Top 10? Sure, you can make a good case for it and I would be lying to you if LeBron's **** **** during the summer of 2010 didn't make me appreciate Kobe a little more.

The hate remained, though. Through it all. Well, maybe not through it all. I had some sympathy for him when he caught that case in Colorado. But then I went back to the hate when he got that ugly-*** tattoo. **** outta here, Kobe.

The Lakers 2016 season couldn't be going any better for a hater like me. He deserves everything, all of it, the whole kit and caboodle. Bryant could've rode off into the sunset after playing six games in the 2014 season, but no, he decided to sign a two-year extension and rob the purple and gold of a proper rebuild.

Now he has to deal with D'Angelo Russell becoming the new host of Cheaters and squirm his way through the most abysmal Laker season in their storied history. The last time the Lakers won 20 or fewer games was in 1958 when they finished with 19. They were still in Minneapolis then. Oh, the horror.

The hate I have for him comes from a place of respect. I know he's the Mamba, I've folded up in fetal positions when the ball was in his hands in the waning seconds of a game. I watched him win rings. I've followed him his entire career. Kobe beat me more than I beat him, and still, I rise. I rise for those that feel he'll never be Mike. I rise for those that root against him. I rise for Kobe haters everywhere. Don't let his final games make you forget how much you despised him all these years. We're all in this together.

There's a few nonsense things in here by Stephen A.

1. Coaches like security. You offer Thibs a 5 year / $30-35mil contract, all guaranteed, NO team options. He'd take it. If it fails, you bite the bullet on the money. This isn't Milwaukee. You offer 3 and a team option at around $4mil, then a perspective coach will look for what gives him the best opportunity to succeed right away, because if the team sputters for 3 years, he's out of a job.

A Head Coach will take Money + Security over Fit or Potential.

2. I mean the Lakers did their best to put a respectable team on the court after the top names were out of reach.. Hibbert, Lou Will & Bass... Add Russell & Randle. And you assume you're getting wins because you have 2 professionals in Lou Will & Bass. Hoping that Hibbert needs a change of scenery to bring himself back to a big defensive presence.

Russell & Randle, you hope give some injection of youth to a team.

Did it turn out the way it was supposed to? Absolutely not.

But let's not act like this team hasn't drastically under performed. Vegas had us at 29.5wins going into the season, and Vegas desparately needs that to be right.

So while some of it is on the players..... How the hell is under performing on that level not on the coach as well.

Also what is the alternative, sign a bunch of decent players for the sake of signing players? Sure would be nice long term outlook if we used all our cap space on guys who are fringe starters
3. I hear a lot of Jim Buss needs to be fired... Hear no Mitch Kupchak needs to be fired.

4. Byron Scott is what the Lakers fans (not us, most of us knew better). But the casual Laker fan, Byron Scott is what they wanted. All the crying about D'Antoni because of Phil, and co-signing James Worthy about MDA led to Byron being the only name really considered.

The "Laker Way" which casual fans like to throw out there like it exists is why we got Byron Scott.

Regardless it was dumb hiring by Mitch & Jim. But they can't act like casual Lakers fans didn't ask for someone like Byron

5. Byron isn't a good coach. Having a veteran team doesn't really make him any better as a coach. But if he knows his style is suited for a veteran team, and guys who have miles in the league... If he could coach even 1 iota. He would recognize that his approach has to change.. Also his way of coaching is outdated, even for a veteran team.

6. His excuse for how Kobe has played is nonsense. I don't care if it is Kobe & 4 DLeaguers. He's not the best player on the planet like he was when it was the Smushcalade & Kwame Brown. You have to adapt accordingly. Kobe is shooting last from 2 & 3, and he still is playing the same way. You have to adapt.

7. Perhaps if Byron ran an offense, team would be a bit better.. Or worked on defense.

8. Kobe being the worst shooter in the league, and shooting the most shots on the team, seems like a pretty big contributor for the team being last in everything.

Does he deserve all of the blame? NO because it's the head coach's job to rein Kobe in.

9. I'm sure he probably blasted Jim for "letting Phil go to the Knicks," but now he's blasting Phil and saying he's not doing a good job.

Sounds like Mitch & Jim made the right choice when Phil was looking for a FO job.

Just so many hot takes from Stephen A.

Friend of mine told me about first take today...smh hate those guys.

Wanted to lost my top 5 Kobe colorways but it has been a super long day. Will take care of it tomorrow along with another little gem....

Some valid points made here with the usual trademark sensationalism by Screaming A.

1. Kobe is not blameless, he's a shell of himself, but I don't care as much because he's the only reason to watch this group at all this season.

2. The management takes most of the blame because this whole situation is from a result of their doing. They're the ones that offered the two year deal to Kobe. They're the ones that have been using him as a seat filler and turnstile driver knowing he was likely never going to be the same after the Achilles tear. My reasoning is they had no plan after that happened and panicked as they saw the cash cow possibly being out to pasture and then them not prepared to move to the next phase. Result = stop gap moves. So they really did pull the wool over some people's eyes and sell them a false bill of goods. They're just lucky that Kobe was able to play an adequate amount of games this season.

3. The Buss' need to sell the team, I don't care id it's to Magic's group or whoever, obviously they're viewed as a joke around the league and as these failed free agent meetings that get leaked show they're not even prepared to talk basketball. A clean break would be great. They aren't their father, they don't have that type of respect with the other executives and damn sure not the players.

4. Byron has to go, this will be the 3rd misfire they've had since Phil left if any of them want to salvage some face remove him immediately and give Thibs a blank check.

5. Stop lying to the fanbase about expectations. With no more Kobe and this sorry roster, don't sell us with hope and dreams anymore and it better be reflected in the ticket prices, cause if we don't get Simmons or Ingram there's no way in hell I'm spending anything to see this atrocity next season.

6. Last but not least pay off whoever is necessary to get the number 1 or number 2 pick, b/c without it there's going to be a few more years of this.

It is sad that Kobe has to go out this way, I wish sometimes he would have just walked away after 2014, but I would have never gotten to see him play so that would have sucked as well. It could be worse though, we could be this bad and been stuck with Dwert for two more years. At least wet can turn the page now to whatever this next era is.

It was announced Monday that Shaquille O’Neal would be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, but he’s still jealous of Kobe Bryant’s final year.

During a recording of next Monday’s The BIG Podcast with Shaq , O’Neal weighed in on Bryant’s retirement tour. Shaq wished that he would’ve had a farewell tour of his own during his final season with the Boston Celtics.

He said via PodcastOne.com:

“I’m super jealous. I wanted a Shaq tour, man. I did. Like, I never said this but this is killing me. It did. So, you know, I had two years in Boston. I got hurt my first year, but the second year, we were going to plan a whole Shaq tour. I’m super jealous. I wanted a Shaq tour.”

He went on:

“But still, I wanted to just go to the city, and people see me play my last game. I did. I’m like – at first I tried to suck it up, but I can’t. It’s killing me.”

Even during the worst season in Lakers history, Kobe’s final season has made every Lakers game a hot ticket, especially in road games. Shaq played for six NBA teams while Kobe spent his entire career with the Lakers. A Shaq farewell tour with the Celtics, though deserved, likely wouldn’t have carried the same significance of Kobe’s last season in Los Angeles.

On the bright side, Shaq will always have a WrestleMania appearance over Kobe.

Milking the Kobe udders to the very last drop.
