Just copped a Nest thermostat for my upstairs and its lit, going to cop a philips hue starter kit today since they now have support for Apple Homekit so I can control my lights with siri and other apps.

Any other cool home automation things out there? I know comcast and att have services where they will set your home up for you but it comes at a fee/contract price.

Yup my goal is to have an energy efficient smart home. Copped the ecobee 3 and installed it last week

Still trying to figure out how to get the locks on my doors to connect to wifi if it's possible.

I wouldn't get comcast or att to set up your home you will be tied to their products. I believe you can do most things yourself.

I may invest in the locks when i get my next crib after i have kids and stuff. My gf's homegirl uses her apartment as an airbnb and put the locks that work with via wifi where she can set a password for airbnb guest can enter so she doesnt have to make keys and she can change the passwords accordingly. Its dope but joints are like 300 per door now

In my own opinion, Those nest thermostats are trash. To each their own.

I honestly can think of better uses with the money for whatever someone has paid for theirs. I've ran tests on these at work for years installed a big handful of these, I've created controlled environments for them to operate in, I even have one at home still in its box. If you have any idea on how a thermostat works then you don't need this. I honestly don't see any advantage in it other than you can see what the temperature is at your wall at that particular spot from your phone. Just my 2cents.

Yeah I didn't get those locks they are cool, but too expensive. I did my front door and basement door for around $300.

They aren't selling well the companies are dropping the prices by coming out with locks with less features.

Perfect for air bnb though.

@ELJEFE  agreed, that is why I didn't go with the Nest. It really doesn't offer much it just looks nice.

Cool story Brad

Majority of this stuff is novelty and wont become a norm for another 10 years.

The only reason I went with nest is I saw the least complaints for it, i mainly got it to turn on my air when Im on my way home so the house will be cool. In the winter I leave my heat on all day.

Sounds interdasting but id be scared as hell of dudes hacking my ish and making it mad hot driving up my gas bill or something

In GA they give rebates on some of this stuff main reason I even decided to try it out, but its oretty cool.

The Nest has a lot of complaints, it has even destroyed HVAC systems. They just keep coming out with new generations (4th gen just dropped nothing has changed) with minimal improvements or listening to what their users want.

I got the ecobee for the remote sensors. Keeps my townhouse an even temperature and the follow me feature is great.

I have a Nest thermostat and I love it. No complaints.

It's really amazing how the thermostat regulates itself within 5 minutes of you walking in the door.

As far as it destroying your HVAC system this is true. With people starting to become more aware of their new found toy in the nest they start to fumble around with the controls. Causing the unit to short cycle burning out the windings in the compressor itself.

Get the Nest professionally installed. That way there is little room for error. The company prides itself on making it's system easy to install/do it yourself...but I would much rather (and I did) have someone who knows HVAC come in and get it set up.

Yea set up is easy but I still had my AC guy install it he came to look at my unit

I want to start working on switching all of my lights from CFL to LED once they drop a little bit more in price.

I'm interested to see how those play out, I def wont be an early adopter though.
I just looked at it, looks very cool but I agree with you definitely going to wait.

You thinking about going solar before the tax credit ends next year?

We're int the process of remodeling slowly, and I'm going to have a nest thermostat paired with my new Lennox Unit this winter. I'm not expecting huge savings, but love the way they thing looks compared to the dull off-white control panel. I won't be doing anything else though, since there is potential for having key systems attached to your home hacked.
