All of the hype in film recently has been around The Martian with even NASA delaying their recent discovery to time it with the release of this movie, but arguably one of the best flicks of the year released the same weekend. Sicario from beginning to end is a non-stop thriller with everyone from Emily Blunt to Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro killing their roles; the latter especially. If you have any interest in the cartels and the drug war in general, this is a must see. I don't know how this movie went under the radar despite the general consensus from critics being a must see film. The opening scene sets the tone for the rest of this epic and when it is done you might need to take a couple of breaths. Thankfully, it looks like it will make a profit this weekend so it wouldn't have been a bomb at the box office.

Solid film other than Emily blunts character who was terrible (her acting was great though)

How so? I saw this complaint on Reddit from some posters. She was the lamb in a world of wolves who still had morals and a sense of doing things the right way.

well first off, she didnt do anything. replace her character with any average joe and the plot points pretty much stay the same. other than be forced to sign a document at the end she had no effect on any of the outcomes of any of the missions.

her character is dull, at work she is constantly pressured into doing things she isn't so sure about and we dont get to see any of her personal life. there's one scene where dude tries to smash but that ends up being a bad guy and she needs saving

she was a lamb in the world of wolves, other than quick reflexes to take out two no name bad guys there was nothing to show that she was good at her job.

her character arc is flat. she starts the movie uneasy about the situation, gets recruited to the team while being uneasy about the situation. she never fully gets on board with what the team is doing, she's always the third wheel. there is nothing that changes at the end, just like in the beginning when they pressure her into taking the job, they pressure her into signing the document. only difference throughout the movie is that she is broken.

but most importantly, the two other characters (brolin and del toro) were far more interesting and actually acted upon their motives rather than just being dragged along for the ride.

the best part of the movie was the climax where after blunt being the main character for the entire movie they forget about her and focus on del toro and his mission. how are you going to be the main character yet when its time for the climax the director doesnt include you at all?

the whole innocent goody two shoes thing was a reach. there is no way someone gets to the position she's at without realising that the government doesnt always play by the rules.

what works about jessica chastain's character in zero dark 30 is that she is the one driving the plot. things are happening because of her drive to make things happen. that's what makes her a strong character that's worth rooting for. in silence of the lambs jodie foster's character is the one trying to solve the case, she uses hannibal for help, she drives the plot. blunt doesnt do anything other than observe the plot as it happens and is a waste of a protagonist.

with all that being said, emily blunt's performance was incredible. It was just a poorly written character.

She wasn't supposed to have an effect on the mission.

The ONLY reason she was brought on was so that the CIA could do their operations. She and the other guy were told during the raid to keep their guns on safety and pointed down further driving home that they were essentially useless in the grand scheme.

Blunt isn't Chastain. Chastain's role worked because it was necessary for the ground forces in ZDT to use her intel. Blunt is reminded often that it is bigger than her when she "told Daddy" and that what she does has no real effect on the streets.

of course it was intended for it to be that way. but just because they wrote her character liek that doesnt mean she isnt a boring, weak and bland character. the problem with the movie is that it focuses on blunts character, if she was a side character the movie would have been a lot better and way more interesting.

its like watching a movie about the 2010 lakers championship team centered around adam morrison, except adam morrison is actually interesting

thought it was pretty good. great comparison to ZD30.

chastain's role was different tho. she was tasked to find osama, and you felt for her at the end cuz the CIA nabbed her....like after high school? am i remembering that correctly? anyways her entire career was searching for that dude. so you felt her struggle, her fight, her sorrow at being alone after it was all over. ZD30 was great.

Blunt, now that it is mentioned, wasn't really central to the plot moving forward, outside of just being there, for legality i guess. (can someone tell me what the rule was that required her to be part of the operation? i couldn't hear them when they recited it :nerd:). At best what I can gather is, you see it from her perspective; how it all unfolds, and in that regard, i was on the edge of my seat. But her character isn't utilized in a way that was key to the plot liek ZD30 so you don't feel for her in anyway. Its a fair argument...blunt is a great actress tho, and a beauty. like just her face is :pimp:

I can also see if sicario didn't focus on one character, and made it more like a movie that observed all the moving parts within the CIA and the field operations, this would've been a slightly different movie, but an interesting movie nonetheless. If anything they could've made del toro's character central since he had personal motives. essentially he was angelina jolie in SALT. just way way darker. he was my fav character.

i need to watch Traffic, never seen it. Sicario was worth every penny tho.

i think they needed someone from (insert her department here) to sign off that no one broke any rules.

would love to see a movie focusing on del toro's character. he had like 1/3rd the screentime of blunt but we got so much more backstory, and because of this I cared about his character more

its been done before, but id watch it.

Great film. Probably my favorite of the year so far. Cinematography was amazing. The soundtrack was perfect as well.

"time to meet God" :x

my favorite movie so far this year cinematography was on point :nthat:

heard a sequel is already in the works? unnecessary imo

Agree. It is going to be centered around del Toro's character.

i thought emily blunts character was used to embody how the american people view the matter.

how naive the american people are and how we think we should be able to fight an impossible war on drugs without getting our hands dirty but that just isnt true.

to me her character was vital to the movie. she added the frustration element to the movie that was important to show how fighting the drug war really feels.

at every turn she was one step behind and when she finally got the big picture she realized how helpless and hopeless she is.

and even after that crazy long journey to the end...the next day starts off just like the last day.

my favorite move this year

acting was top notch and emily blunt is a beast.

I think the film accurately portrays the atmosphere in Juarez. As well as the ruthlessness of cartels. Definitely a movie to own. Del Toro was a good pick for the role he played.

its crazy how they were on top of the base and can see across the border into juarez and just see "fireworks" at dusk. i can't imagine what its like to live in a city like that.

This movie was amazing. Way better than Black Mass. I'm in for a sequel. Cinematographer should win an Oscar.

I went to the see both the Martian and Sicario and I have to say that I enjoyed Sicario way more! This is a very good movie. Del Toro owned that character man!
