whats in a name? VOL....RAVEN symone

Raven is a pseudo ghetto name tho the only white girl I know named raven is raven black the "actress" and she loves black dudes

Asian cultures see this so differently. I'm not sure stuff like ****ing and shucking & jiving are even a thing in that culture Racism is seen very differently.

Also from my experience outside of extreme cases Asian Americans (like Americanized Asians raised in the American culture) don't even have this issue or care about it. They'll change their name and see no qualms about it.
asians although minorities can never begin to imagine the experience that black americans have.

anytime an african american client shares there experience with me, i always meet them with this:

I'd love to say "I can imagine how it feels like or I know where you're coming from.  But the truth is, I will never know. And for that I'm sorry. I hope your experience with me and you're experience in therapy can be different of that of other institutions that you have met."

one thing the year of police brutality did for me aside bring me closer to that of civil rights for all minorities, it really forced me to look at my own self, my own culture.

that's the basis of my statements earlier. it's not about ideal, it's about mores checking oneself as an individual and seeing if the walk matches the talk.

Most Asians from Asia change their names because Westerners that are ignorant to different cultures and/or different languages (most of the population) can't pronounce them or make fun of them.
its not because westerners are ignorant, most do it because they want to be a part of western culture

you have chinese dudes in china asking to go by their english names when 99.9% of their daily interactions are with chinese people

It's really not hard to pronounce 99% of Asian names. Either you have zero exposure to other cultures and languages, or you choose to not learn how to pronounce things the right way.

I've seen that too but just from my experience I've met many more Asians of different ethnicities that change their names because Americans can't pronounce them or will make fun of them.

Just off the top off my head I know an Indian guy named Ramandeep who calls himself Randy because the people who can pronounce his name make corny jokes like "ram him deep". My friend's name is Ming, but she changed it to Amanda because kids at school used to make up racist rhymes with her name. I can go on and on with similar examples

I'm Asian and there are some Asian names I struggle with sometimes. Chinese names with letter X's in them. Also the last names of Thai people I know.

Are Asians ****ing when they go by Western names when at colleges and work? I didn't know any Koreans at school that went by their ethnic name when not around their own. I knew more Tiffany's, John's, Ted's and Harry's than whatever their real name was.
IMO yes they are

for sure i can see that. I grew up in china so I'm looking at it from the other side.

even common chinese names like "lee" "chen" "wang" are not pronounced the same when spoken in english so I can see how it can be frustrating

Anyone step back and just think that Raven is "hired" to play the Barkley role on the view? Meaning it is her responsibility to rile people up, upset then, just to bring ratings to the show?

I take everything on TV as done for ratings. Once you get in that mindset, none of this stuff really upsets you anymore. The whole world is Pro Wrestling man. Yall laugh when I say it but it is true

Damn we ignorant cause we can't pronounce the name

Well I get what he meant. Sometimes ppl put no effort in to trying and you can see the playful sometimes insulting ignorant attempt.

However, there is an excuse. Being raised in Asia and being raised in the Americas cause you to develop different parts of your mouth/voice which makes it harder for you to speak in certain languages especially the more difficult ones like Mandarin. I forgot which language it was that makes it easier for you to learn Russian and Mandarin. English born speakers will have a harder time though. It's why things like accents exist and we can tell where a person is from when they speak English sometimes.

I try to make an effort with the names though given I've experienced similar with my own name.

I think people like Raven, Trump, O'Reilly, etc. probably don't believe most of the @$#@ they say. But the fact that they're spreading disgusting ideas to millions of people just for money, views, votes, etc. makes them much worse than the average racist that keeps his or her views hidden.

I'm sorry but when I read this

Now that that's out of the way. I can understand laughing at yourself the first few times but years of that would be insufferable. He could've went with Ram for short.

I know exactly what you're talking about though. Asians got it with the jokes too when I was growing up.

This can backfire on you though. If they tell you their name is Mike Cho or w/e don't go and ask them what's their secret Asian name :smh:  Even more offensive.

I don't BLAME anyone for trying to make a dollar.

I don't BLAME anyone for not caring about them spreading nastiness.

They are just looking out for themselves. I can't BLAME anyone for doing that.

Now, would I do it? I don't think I would but I understand why those that do it, do it

Not condoning, just saying......
